Certainly you do. So I seek a comment from you. Who are this year's equivalents of Brown and Casboult we should be recruiting instead of Allen?

Equivalents? Every year is different, but I'd say Fort ruck/Big O ruck forward is at least as good as any other options going around. As in there are no options available (as far as I know) that are worth clogging up salary cap space with. I just think he could be culturally toxic, the article below captures exactly why I feel so.

everyone at essendon knew daniher was out the door for an entire season. he was a great contributor to club culture from what we have heard. i dont see how allen meeting with a senior coach he has an existing relationship with makes him potentially toxic at all.

Joe wasn't their skipper though...

The bloke is not just a player, he's a captain. It's a role which requires deep devotion and commitment. The damage he is doing to the West Coast squads' faith in him and the future is toxic. He would have known how this would look, his manager would have known how this would look, mercenary.

Yeah I don't think we could fit in Allen with our cap space I think we need to look for someone cheaper like a shannon neale or an archer reid. I'm already shocked we can fit everyone in our cap now let alone another $800k+ player I'm pretty sure we're doing a melbourne storm type of thing already we can't keep pushing our luck.

You don't know what's going on behind closed doors maybe the club have given their blessing for him to shop around as they want his band 1 compo pick and he probably won't be around for their next premiership tilt.

I'm very high on Shannon Neale. I'm not sure if he would be cheaper than Allen. Obviously Allen is a free agent, so you don't have to trade for him, but Neale doesn't carry any of the injury "baggage", is younger and can genuinely play forward ruck. Would be the perfect foil for Hipwood and Morris.

Tom Lynch and Steven May were captains that left. They did offer a lot to their respective traded teams as players. Im not sure what their contribution was like to each teams' respective cultures. However, I dont think we need to bring Allen in for his leadership. We just need him to come in and take some marks and kick goals.

I think Oscar Allen would thrive in a Lions environment where he doesn't have to be the man in a media pressure cooker. He can just be another forward and leave the leadership stuff until he feels confident enough to join the leadership group (like Daniher did after a few seasons). He won't ever feel the pressure to become the captain or vice as we already have a long line-up of people who could do this. He could just be like Lester and focus on his own game + develop standards for the other forwards in the group. He could play as a foil to take the pressure off of Logan Morris and then slowly transition out if Tye Gallop becomes something in a few years.

I would much prefer him to JUH who could actually poison our culture with his drug abuse/partying situation. It took players like Hodge to come in and set professional standards. Its just as easy for a JUH type to come in and link a bunch of young players to a party lifestyle and completely destabilise the group. Then we would become just like the Bulldogs where we have elite players held back because half the team are party types and don't take their professional responsibilities as a full time 24/7 job during the season.

EDIT: I also think we may be in a better position to get Allen than the Hawks. The fact is we would have known for 12+ months we need a Daniher replacement. We've been linked to Allen for a while now. Players have said before most of this chats/meetings happen over the season breaks. The fact that Hawks are meeting him now instead of over the preseason shows they are chasing/coming from behind. I think Allen wants to stay at the Eagles but got low-balled in his contract offer compared to Waterman. We have put up a decent pitch to him late last year and Eagles have looked to match the 6 year offer. Hawks have sniffed an opportunity and are now trying to gazump us (like we did to the Swans when Daniher first voiced he wanted out). So I doubt that Allen to the Hawks is as sure a thing as the media are making out.

Conversely I think the Starc situation is playing out in reverse. We put out an offer -> Starc felt low-balled. Starc has been talking to Perth teams during the holidays and have offers on the table trying to force our offer up. The issue now is his concussion history is going to put a hard ceiling on how much risk a team is willing to take on him.

Speaking of which, Ollie Lord I have been impressed with most times I've seen him, but hasn't really come up in discussions and right now he can't even get a run with Port.

I haven't seen enough of them or him lately to know exactly why this is the case, but I've liked what I've seen from him and that was even before he kicked 4 on Harris Andrews in a final.

I like him too. I reckon he’d be hard to pry out though. Keeping Hawkins out of the team late last year shows how much they rate him.

Being a Freo man, the only thing we might be able to offer that the Cats can’t is the Qld weather.

Has been genuinely spuddy every other time I've seen him. Big and slow. The fact he can't get a game with Port's current key forward injury crisis is concerning. Even the 4 on Harris was one of the more arsey bags you'll see.

Do you think Lachie was a mercenary for having a secret meeting with Dom Ambrogio during the season in 2018? Or because it didn't get out until the season was finished, does that make it ok?

EDIT - looked it up, and Lachie was in Freo's leadership group that year. Why should we care about players on other teams being mercenaries?

What about this young kid named Ty Gallop. Only 19 but great mark. Very competitive and looks like he'll be ready for game time in 2026.

😎

Doedee was vice captain as well at Adelaide.

I’d say it’s probably a good trait for players to know when something isn’t working even as a leader. No point trying to force a situation that doesn’t work for you.

When you want out, you want out.
I won’t hold that against Allen in a performance perspective for this year. If he really wants out he is not likely to be playing at 100%. Even when he has kicked a couple of goals this year, he really hasn’t been too excited, even when West Coast were up against us and he kicked the miracle goal out of his ass, he really didn’t get too pumped about it.
My concern is more for his long term knee issues rather than his head space if we were to take him on.
He will lift in a team that is genuinely in contention.

i like him too, but think he's rated pretty highly down there, would be hard to pry out, what about young Pat Voss at Freo, will be dropped as soon as that lumbering Darcy returns

it is hard to forget his performance that night, think he had a minor injury to shoulder in the SANFL but for some reason has fallen out of favour, good call!

I’m a watch on Allen. Was good in 2023. Being free agency is massive. That puts him above other options for now. The big query i have is he can’t ruck so that presents a problem. Would hippy have to ruck? I actually think he could.

We do have a dearth of key position players coming through. If Smith and Gallop come on we are fine. Would be good to see them play some seniors this year. Smith seems a classic slow burn and i reckon could be a great ruckman, and a good tap ruckman with his height and leap, which could be a new weapon with our midfield. I like Gallop’s aggression which is a very important trait.

I was thinking we have had 6 years straight of top 6 or better. Last time we did that we jagged 3 flags BUT then fell off a cliff. We seem much better placed from a young talent pov this time: wilmot, lohman, morris, ashcroft x 2, fletcher are all effectively proven young talent 22 and under. We had not stacked that sort of young talent in 2004. The best was probably Adcock, Brennan and Shattock.
