With walters and fyfey finishing up we will have some loose change to throw around.
Walters and Fyfe leaving aren’t going to free up much cap space, they’re on much less $ than their previous deals and rumour is half of it is AFL money for us to maintain some “stars” for AFL marketing purposes.
Walters, Fyfe, Brodie, Switta & Ras may free up enough for Warner and 4 draftees.
If we want Warner and Pickett then someone on decent $$ needs to go as well.

I like how complacent most of this board have become

One of the most damaging mids is coming out of contract who is a west Aussie and he is surplus to our needs.

And old and almost retired and often injured Fyfe who most likely won't play on
Then Johnson or Erasmus will have to step up big timeSerong Brayshaw Young

Or
Warner Serong Brayshaw Young

I know which will give us that premiership edge
Laughable isn’t it. People have short memories.

People should go away and rewatch two games in particular - the one v Geelong and the one v Port Adelaide, both in our last handful of recent games.

Then tell me with a straight face we don’t need Chad Warner.

Chad Warner is not a need.

If you go and rewatch our last two games you’d see that we NEEDED Treacy, or Pearce, or Darcy.

Also zero crumbing goals in the last four weeks so actually our biggest NEED to immediately push us over the edge would be a quality small I.e Bolton or Pickett. Not an extra midfielder.

Using games where we missed our best KPP from every line and still only lost by a couple goals to top 4 teams is not a strong argument for needing a midfielder that we’d have to spend so much on

Game style and tactics are the main thing that lost us 3-4 games this year. Personnel would’ve helped but that isn’t the reason - we played well enough for slightly more than three quarters to win those games.

Our normal game plan works well enough most of the time but there was a few occasions we put away every attacking instinct to defend a small lead with 15 minutes left. Teams got momentum and scored whatever goals they needed to get in front. Play like we did all game to get that small lead and IMO we win most of those games and make finals, possibly even top four.

We’ll always lose a game or two throughout the season because of short term injuries throwing the team out of whack. That’s just footy.

I think people are comparing your very good top four midfielders versus having a weaker overall list around the ground that can offset injury and form. Fyfe not being around just means more opportunity for one of a number of young players with potential to step up including the two you mentioned but also potentially Reid or Simpson or even Brodie.

If anything, it is good balanced and experienced lists rather than lists with a small number of superstars that win premierships. To that end, I don't personally feel like Warner will give that edge.

IMHO it’s NOD who is most like Warner from those already in the team. Plays outside but can go inside and loves to burst through the middle and have a ping at the big sticks.
A lot to play out in 2025. from what we saw at the end of 2024 though a top 4 mid rotation of AB, Serong, Young and NOD with support from Johnson and Bolton rotating through just for fun looks pretty stacked to me and replacing switta’s 10 goals a year with Picketts 40 would be far more beneficial to our team balance than Warner replacing NOD.

Disagree

That's because we has our talls injured

If we had our best 22 on the field would we win the premiership last year? Probably not

We now have Bolton. Will we win the premiership with him? Maybe

Add one more A grade mid in being Chad and you don't need to rely on an ageing Fyfe who will retire at the end of the season or a fringe 22 in Johnson. Chad would absolutely lift the midfield.

There’s a debate taking place, and then there’s you having a convo with yourself. No one is saying what you’re saying they saying.

Our list is in solid shape at the moment, compared to any other time in our club history. We have to start looking at these star players we're targeting not as a replacement for some local WAFL guy the WAFC generously rustled up for us, but as a replacement for solid but not superstar talent we already have on our list.

Viewed like that, Warner is an improvement on the guy we'd otherwise be playing in our 2025 midfield: Neil Erasmus. Now, obviously, Warner is better than Erasmus. Is he ~1 mil dollars worth of improvement? (approx 500k salary vs. 1.5 mil) Well........... our midfield is already solid, we probably want the last man in to be more of a defensively minded, self-sacrificial player, etc. etc. Goal-kicking midfielders are great but you can only support so many outside-minded offensive players at one center bounce, and Young seemed to really relish the more offensive role we handed him towards the end of the season.

In 2025, Kozzy would be playing ahead of Sturt. Is that ~500k worth of improvement? (approx 300k salary vs. 800k salary) The case seems a lot easier to make. I do like Sturt, but we're not getting crumbing goals out of Sturt, we're not getting tackles, we're not getting blistering outside pace.

Gav raised the players we could really see some internal organic growth from.

NOD and Sturt are 2 who could essentially still fade away to nothing in terms of AFL career, but both appear to have ceilings that could be beneficial to the team.
If both could take some steps this year it could have a decent impact.

Sturt is likely to find himself around the fringes though, particularly with Bolton coming in, so he'll need to stay fit and knock the door down.

Completely disagree with this, Sturt is a two goal a game medium forward, he easily co-exists with Kozzie (just like fritch at the Dees).
Switta or Freddy are the ones under the microscope if Pickett arrived.

These two bring totally different things to the team. Looking at goals per game isn't all the data you need to make this call.

You have to either ignore how we've selected the team for the past 3 years when we've had full availability of these three (Switta and Freddy start in the team every single time over Sturt), or know something the selection panel doesn't.

It's actually too many goal kickers IMO. I'd rather Switta in over Sturt if we had Pickett. It might be just like Fritsch, but the Dee's dont also have Treacy, Amiss and Bolton

I don't think he replaces Sturt but your point is well made.

IF Sturt has a great year he's a medium forward with pace and accuracy. A difficult match up if he reaches potential.

2 X talls
1 X forward ruck
1 X medium forward
3 X small forwards

One or two of the small/mediums to rotate midfield and bench.

If Pickett comes, I think Bolton takes Switta’s role and Kozi plays as the small forward closest to goal.

It was a glaring deficiency for us in 2024. Bolton will most likely need to fill that role next season, but his best position is as a mid-forward connector IMO.

So we’re potentially talking about upgrading two of the smalls from Switta & Emmett to Bolton & Pickett over the course of two years.

I still think it's crazy that halfway through last year the 3 players in the afl on the absolute top of our dream wish list were Bolton, Warner and Kozzie, and we've already got one and now seem to be a very real chance of getting 1 more, and possibly even all 3

shouldnt kick it to him if hes not in purple...then play keepyoff!
Bravo sir. All my years on this planet and I have never before seen the word 'keepyoff' written in text.

What is the consensus of how to spell this fun activity? Is it keepyoff as OG suggests or is it something else? Two words perhaps.
