The AFL should have let teams have a cat b rookie out of TAS, to give some playerAFL experience. Give TAS a group to pick from when they come into existence. Not all clubs would have bothered and not all would succeed but if it produced two-four players would have been worth it.

Potential access to top 10 VicM players with discounts will help them

I think I’d just give them very good picks in the 2027 AFL Draft but place limits on the following:
  • Amount of selections to be used in the 2027 AFL Draft. I’d suggest a number similar to Richmond’s 2024 Draft (around 7-9 picks)
  • Amount of 18 year olds on their senior list in 2028 (Slightly higher than above to allow for a few Tasmanians to be part of the group).

If there’s more talented Tasmanians than expected, I’d be happy enough to see players that are clearly senior list quality sitting on Tasmania’s Rookie list in 2028. They’d probably also be 19 and 20 year olds which wouldn’t count towards the above.

They’ll need a lot more draft picks than they’ll be allowed to use for this to work plus some very generous salary cap concessions. Ideally you’d want 20-25 players with AFL experience plus a bunch of very good mature aged state league talent on their list in 2028. Those levels weren’t realistic for Gold Coast and GWS but might be if the AFL does this right for Tasmania.

I hope they get as little as possible.
I think it's actually better for Freo if they get a lot of good picks, it will hurt other teams way more than Freo, we already have our talent for the next push. Taking talent away from our opponents is good for us.

I just don’t want to miss the top four or top two on percentage to a team that played Tasmania twice. I just know we won’t be the team that plays them twice - the AFL doesn’t help us like that.

What was our schedule for GCSs and GWS?

I guess my expectation is that given crowd size is going to be small it could easily be us. Not because AFL are doing us favours, but to do the opposite.

I recon the AFL will try force some fake rivalry between Norf and Tassie to make the kangas seems like they belong in the league.

Great call. The Roos should be ready to contend for finals by 2028 and with two easy extra wins they'll bump to top four.

So maybe we want to meet them in that qualifying final

We played both twice in 2016 in one of our worst ever seasons. GWS was top four that year. Gold Coast weren’t much better than us but we’re still established at that point.

2022 is the only other season (GWS) we’ve either of them twice.

It’s not about drawing crowds in Home and Away games - it’s about increasing revenue come finals time.

With current list size restrictions, I don’t think the draft concessions need to be too extreme, let them pillage the free agency market as they have a blank cheque book, let them pre-list anyone who’s previously nominated for the draft and been overlooked.
In the last couple of years we’ve brought in Voss, McDonald, Narkle, Wagner, Sharp and missed on Mannagh (who looks great at the cats) without expending more than a 3rd round pick.
I think they’d be more competitive building most of their team with mature ages and shouldn’t get anything like draft picks GWS received.

Will it be hard for them to sign free agents? GWS could offer the anonymity of living in Sydney, GC could offer the weather and lifestyle, moving to Tassie as a 20-something is a hard sell.

It is a hard sell.

Recruitment is key for Tasmania.

I've suggested that they get Country Victoria as a recruiting zone for 3 years.

If you restrict their draft hand to say 10 picks where does the rest of their list come from? Realistically they'll only get 3 or 4 A and B graders if you force them to load up on Darcy Tucker type fringe players they'll be hard to watch.

We never had a double up early days of GC and GWS.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get Tassie at gather round year one. The AFL will want to maximise their exposure against the big clubs and also limit their trips to WA.

I don’t think my restrictions on Tasmania would do too much other than remove 10-15 youngsters compared to Gold Coast and GWS from their senior list. Some of those would be locals placed on the rookie list anyway. Both Gold Coast and GWS had massively expanded senior lists btw - I’m expecting the AFL to go with an expanded rookie list this time.

FWIW this is how Gold Coast and GWS got their youngsters:
  • 12x17 year olds a year early. I’m skeptical how good this was tbh. There’s guns like Cameron, Treloer and Shiel but also a lot of deadwood that either would’ve gone late in the draft or not at all. There’s obviously a few in between that would’ve gone in the 30s and 40s as well.
  • The draft. Gold Coast took ten 18 year olds FWIW. GWS took eleven whilst also drafting three older players (two of those would’ve been DFAs these days).
  • Zone selections. Interestingly very few of these were successful and most of those were actually older than 18 when Gold Coast/GWS started so wouldn’t be part of the quota I suggested.

Honestly think I’m robbing them of 3-4 gun youngsters and moving a bunch of 18 year old locals to the rookie list.

FWIW both Gold Coast and GWS could’ve added 30+ players (not including zone selections or trades) that were over 18 years old with the concessions they had but for whatever reason they didn’t. It may have been salary cap and it may have just been list strategy. It’s up to the AFL to find out why and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

We will get a signal in the mid season draft to what the AFL expects for Tasmania. Similar to the AFLW draft where only those above a certain age could nominate to protect the sub 21 players for Tas.

I was honestly thinking they’d scrap it altogether for a year to allow for Tasmania to get the best mature aged talent but I really don’t mind this idea either.
