Surely they get a VFL side, with 20 mature agers, and 10 younger players in it.

and the best 10 players make it.

What if the AFL allowed the Devils to recruit AFL players for their VFL side end of 2026 along with those 17 year olds?

I'm not talking about the likes of Daicos, but someone like Alex Pearce or Scott Pendlebury (to a lesser extent) as a playing coach could start them out strong.

Thought of similar to this too and think it's a good idea.

I think the signing of DFAs on two year deals (one VFL, one AFL) in 2026 and a SSP period over the 2026/2027 off season could also work well. I think there's quite a few delisted players without AFL homes this year that'd offer a fair bit.

A massive salary cap by VFL standards in 2027 and the opportunity of becoming an AFL player if they play well enough might get quite a few of the best mature agers playing for Tasmania in 2027. I wouldn't place limits on how many of these players they could sign - if they're good then more the better.

The Mid Season Draft would be more them getting the best players that are just above draft age (19/20 year olds) and perhaps the 22/23 that's come from nowhere. Players would have to agree to play for their VFL side too - the MSD they would be in an open draft.

I didn't really like the recruiting of those 17 year olds tbh. You look at the ones Gold Coast and GWS got and there's about 5-6 players that were quite good, a few that played early on but didn't make it and some that might not have been drafted at all a year later.

If you're talking about locals playing for their VFL team that's pretty much essential IMO.

Pendlebury as a player coach would be good. (Maybe a year too late)
James Aish would be another good player for them (For VFL year, plus maybe first year in AFL)
Could offer him an Assistant coach role, for 2 more years as well.

Pearce would still be too good to play VFL.

The 5 best Tasmanian players, who had played on an AFL list would be good a start as well.

I think allowing Tasmania to purchase and "bank" talent for two years over 2026 and 2027 would allow them to follow the GWS model of buying elite young players from clubs (in 2027) and elite older players/role models in 2026 for a year of VFL and then a year or two of AFL.

I do expect Alex Pearce to leap at the chance to be captain of Tasmania and Tasmania would be silly not to have him there with their very early squad to start them on the professional path. The only question is whether playing a year of VFL before back at the AFL, while being paid AFL level money, is too much of an ego hit or whether Fremantle would release him from his contract early.

If we want to get Willy Wonka creative, then the AFL could give Tasmania a priority pick for each state/territory;
VIC, SA, WA, NSW, QLD, NT and then they can sell that pick to select a player from that state prior to the following year's draft beginning.

They may have to remove NSW and QLD from that list for obvious reasons.

It would make for interesting haggling, especially if the top five projected picks for the following year are all from various states.

I expect the AFL will probably take inspiration from their North Melbourne assistance packages and give Tasmania picks in the 2028 Draft that must be traded tbh.

He will be leading us both on all year..... then NEK MINNIT he signs with the swans.
Hopefully it’s 2024 all over again and with the emergence of S. Uperstar Freo withdraw from the race and then he resigns with the Swans mid year. He then misses a kick after the siren to get within 10 goals of Freo in the next game.
