Back by popular demand. However...

There has been some aggro from publishers of articles in recent months about sites that copypasta their content onto other sites, particularly the paywalled ones, which could lead to fines and whanot for those that do it. Apparently there are copywrite laws for these things. As a result we can no longer have full articles reposted here, so if you come across something then please refrain from nabbing the whole thing and just post the link. Quoting a paragraph or two and linking the source is fine however, just don't get greedy.

Here's the updated site-wide rule: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/please-read-re-copyright-posting-newspaper-articles.1389553/

Here's an example of what you can do:

"If West Coast was the gold standard for how to operate, then Fremantle's arrival into the AFL in 1995 could be viewed as a series of cautionary tales.

Despite eight wins in that debut season, a series of poor recruiting choices meant they didn't play their first final until 2003."

If they believe that us not making finals until 2003 was solely due to "a series of poor recruiting choices" then I have a bridge to sell them.

Thanks for your understanding.

How many times have I heard this kind of thing over the decades I've been following football? And not just from Freo. Just meaningless words which gets trotted out after a team gets whooped and vows to be better next time. Only to get whooped again some time in the future, and then the same sort of words come out again.

Agree more puff pieces from the players.

Lets win some hard quality games against very good opposition instead of talking up this is never happening again

What exactly do you want him to say? Did you read the whole article?
He gave some good insight into what they felt went wrong & why they’re disappointed it happened.

Meh, he was asked about it and gave a brutally honest and detailed answer. While acknowledging they have to prove it, I thought he gave us a good an answer as you can want.

Let see them back it up now.

I'm never overly concerned about what the players say. They are chosen, groomed and prepped by the club, and I think play the role well. Not disclosing much. Accepting responsibility. Promising a response.

I thought Serong gave a little more than that, exposing a little more of the personal impact on him and the team.

The only good answer is what happens in the next game or the next contest.

Can see both sides of the argument in the comments above.
I don’t even bother reading those type of pieces from the west or herald sun anymore to be honest. Caleb did the same thing any other player would do. It’s meaningless but he’s got to say something.

Opinion pieces are much more interesting than routine pieces from journos piecing together quotes from a player after a game that are usually just cliches.

I don't care what he says because players always give cliched answers to the media. But at the same time they are still just meaningless words and the only thing that matters are actions.

I agree,

they cant exactly just say to the media "im not gonna say anything - we'll do it on the weekend". There's actually obligations they have to meet regarding media, BUT they can certainly be a lot smarter with how they talk. THis was a pretty good insight from Caleb and he said pretty much what he needed to.

Other senior figures havent spoken great. JL's Vanilla comment was just arrogant, as have been some of the comments from the board.

They've also allowed the narrative of how we'll challenge for the flag this year get far too out of hand in the media. It just shouldn't have been given the time of day by the club. There's been too much flag talk. We haven't even come close to achieving anything during this current era - lets crawl before we can walk.

I’ve just listened to the Joe Brierty interview with Duff on SEN. Holy crap!! I thought JLo talked about ‘the contest’ a lot but this was another level. Get the two of them in a room together and I reckon you have an echo chamber that can’t be good for the development of our game plan.

The end of season 2024 review needed someone to apply a critical lens to what went wrong - not just parrot back at the head coach.

It also makes the Brodie non selection even more baffling because the one thing he excelled at more than anything in 2022 was extracting the ball from the contest.

That's grim reading

Grim reading for JLo. Champion data were also saying that control based game plans win you games in H/A but not in finals.
Interesting comment from Xavier Ellis on the hardball gets podcast.

“You should not be hitting 100% of your kicks…because it means your too safe and not being positive”, and at Hawthorn they were ok with 80% and then bust your nuts to get the ball back if you made an error.

So in this article he’s got both areas covered. We’re too safe with the ball and we can’t get it back

Yep
You replace the words "Caleb Serong" with "Jason Weitering" and "Fremantle" with "Carlton" and you'll read essentially the same article in the Herald Sun

Sorry, but stuff like this scares me a lot. Things were going badly so guys deviated from the plan and tried to do more to fix it. So what are the options:

a) Stick to the plan that isn't working, but be harder at the contest, or
b) ???

Maybe the players are trying stuff when things obviously aren't working because the coaching staff aren't?

To me, it looks like the better teams make stuff up on the fly at times to win games. Don't tell me Sicely, the Chad, Toby Green etc don't "try to do more" when things aren't going well or the game is on the line? Maybe if some of our leaders had deviated from the plan a few times we might have won one of our last four games last year.
