Can we get back to - who’s burning up the track and outrageous extrapolations of how brilliant someone will be from one two second footage where they kicked a goal or took a hanger on the softy bags? Good old days rather this Days of our Loves stuff?

Let me start.

Williams looks ripped! One thing that turns a good player with some limitations into a great player is they put elite work into their body. Morris was too small, Moyd wasn’t fast enough, Wood wasn’t tall enough but look at their conditioning - it was awesome . Williams is looking cut.

Bont was running out of gas late last year and has stripped some Kgs and increased his running - coming top couple. Brownlow in the cupboard.

Darcy looks to have put a bit of size on - he already has great core strength but he could well be the best player in the comp much faster than we think.

Friejah on top couple for running trials / this guy will be a star - is already highly skilled and a great decision maker - if he can build his tank….

On the funny side clear still looks 10 - how can you be in an elite conditioning system for three years and look to have put on no muscle at all? That’s an effort on itself - Even Bob M wasn’t Arnie but eventually looked like he as at least ‘rangy’.

Croft and Poulter who have to run around in the shower to get wet looked to have put on some size. We can easily forget that Croft is a highly rated first round with special traits. Buss, JOD and Croft could be a great back three on a few years and can transition well with Jones and Lobb setting the standards. At 201 he could also get some hard development playing a bit of Ruck like Lobb.

Big improver - I hope and believe it could be Artie Jones. Last few games last year he looked to be gaining confidence and was taking marks and setting up plays. A position is there if he wants it. Dolan, VDM and McNeil are his competition and this means this is probably the most open position on the ground - grab it Artie.

Except I don't think Freijah needs to worry about his tank. Just won the 2km time trial. I realise a game of AFL is a lot more than that, but I'm not sure I can think of anyone who is elite at the 2km with a poor tank.

Agree / is more the repeat sprints for wing. Many can run the 2k well but can maintain the repeat high speed. But yes - 2k is a great indicator and he is killing it.

2km is a good indicator of conditioning after the off-season. I'd say it's a pretty poor indicator of "in-game fitness".

When I was playing, I would routinely come top couple in a 2km time trial. But I would blow up fairly easily in a game and my GPS numbers were never flash. The ability to recover after repeat sprints is by far the best conditioning trait of a player. I'd mostly take 2km numbers with a grain of salt as the season approaches.

It can be pretty accurate though.

My 2km time was quite below par, when games started my fitness was also below par.

Was just thinking he has pace and is quite quick off the sprint. Something our current midfield is lacking. He has had his best season at the club so far in my opinion

Williams looks ripped. Could Williams play in the middle?
Definitely could. I'm surprised we haven't tried it (other than wing) considering his traits. He racked up some record there when he was about 16 - think it was 60-something disposals.

Edit - it was 56 disposals for Glenelg U18s, which is apparently a league record.

Last year I always felt that Richards & Williams would be decent options for a transition midfield when Libba, Treloar & Macrae moved on. Obviously the Richards one already happened.

I don’t think Williams is needed in there for the next couple of years. Acquiring Kennedy was a shrewd move because he can bridge that gap between Libba & Sanders reaching the appropriate level as an inside mid.

We did try him in the middle briefly a couple of years back.

His problem was that he tended to take tacklers on rather than release quickly and got caught with the ball often in tight quarters.

Maybe with a bit more experience it's worth another go.

The game is heading this way. You need players with good 2k time trails yet even more important is 10k. This is the stamina clubs are looking for. Its happening all over the country at junior levels. The best kids are now athletes, involved in run clubs, cross countries etc.
