Eh. I actually kind of disagree. A 10K run is not really transferrable to a game of football. Players will also rarely train in a way that reflects this level of endurance. Hence why clubs prefer the yo-yo test as a mechanism, because it involves short bursts and very short recovery times, reflecting the running style you'll see in a game of footy. Training is much closer to a hybrid of anaerobic/aerobic that tests both energy systems, such as repeat 400m sprints.

Yes the best kids are athletes, but that's true with almost every modern sport.
10k at competitive times builds the stamina required to run out a full game of football. Its building the base so you can do the repeat sprints. Beep tests are great as well and there is multiple facets to it, I agree but nothing beats kilometres into the legs on a regular basis.

Playing against Hawks again

Club raises $78m from government, its fans and its own funds to build a new grandstand and better spectator facilities to help better the sport of Australian Football and is shunned.

AFL instead prioritises the interests of a bigger Melbourne MCG club in a market they are about to get booted out of.

Agree, endurance is endurance, however you get it. But just getting consistent kms into the legs is the easiest way.

Agree to disagree I guess. From what I know, clubs will aim to get a good total of cumulative kilometers per training session (7-10km or more) and resultingly, a player will get heaps of km into the legs per week. This will be through several different modes of training, mostly 400m efforts, repeat sprints, and high-intensity running built into drills. Rarely will you see a team order players to do 5km or more of straight running on a regular basis - it's just not seen as transferrable into the modern game. Don't get me wrong, most players would have no issue running 10km at a good clip. But training-wise, it's not a efficient at all, nor is it a great indicator of on-field production for the average player (hence why they don't test for it).

This.

It’s been a while since a teams focus is long kms in the legs. Almost decades.

Short, sharp, strength, repeat. Pretty much sums up modern training regimes. Ball work incorporated. Kms built up over short sessions.

10km runs probably ok in the off season to keep the tank half full, but even then players would move to sprint efforts closer to pre season to work on the repeat effort stuff.

The Dogs are in Ballarat for their community camp.

Marra is posting photos from inside a South Melbourne boxing gym, so he definitely isn’t in Ballarat with the rest of the squad.

Spot on.

I can tell you from experience that it's not really that transferrable. I once had a huge off-season of running big distances (40km weeks) and thought I was coming into the season an absolute legend. Killed it in the 2km time trial, but I didn't feel any better in game. If pure aerobic endurance was best for players, I wonder why the sport scientists haven't caught on yet

About 20 odd players in Ballarat today. My kids loved getting up close with them.

Remainder spread across Stawell, Ararat and Horsham.

Jamarra at the gym... Its either a club enforced ban or he has just completely checked out. Weightman the only other one I haven't seen at any venue.

A part of me believes he’s suspended.. then there’s a part of me that thinks you possibly couldn’t be that stupid to post photos of yourself whilst the club is away (which invites and create questions / creates doubts from fans)…

If the allegations about his recent partying habits are true, then he definitely isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed 😳

Would be huge if Poulter could kick on. He is seriously massive. Looks to have filled out, love his huge boot. Seems to connect well with Marra.
Looked very settled on a wing during our run late in the year. Was injured/dropped and never made it back in for whatever reason.
I still think he can be a solid foot soldier.

You would have to suggest that’s the case though. It’s not like he’s gone home for personal reasons. He’s floating around his usual area of residence, out and about doing usual things and away from club based activities.

Not too many top sports scientists at the junior footy level that London was talking about, but no one said “pure aerobic endurance was best” anyway. These things aren’t binary.

If you were just trotting around a flat deck for 40km a week and had been doing 20-30km previously then it’s unsurprising there wasn’t much improvement. If you were coming from 0 running and were doing intervals and hill climbs during your distance running then I’d be amazed if your footy didn’t dramatically improve. But that’s the problem with anecdotes.

Marra can be found in the Dogs kitchen.
All this talk of club ban or injury is pure big footy hyperbole.
Just seen him instructing naughts how to cook the perfect healthy meal with mission wraps. Great to see marra promoted to head chef. The changes at the Dogs is not just limited to the footy department. Change is a good thing right?
I even saw lobby open his mouth wide as marra fed him and I am sure I heard lobby whisper "c'est delicieux" that's french for yum yum. It's good to see the dogs starting to cotton on.

Incorrect, each player has a program which involves a body of work they need to complete. Your mixing up official training with pre-season. I have an in with a direct player (through his uncle) and high klms is a huge part of his program and of course it was to be for the role he plays in the side. He is a fantastic kid.

I feel like the Saints are very running focused in the pre season

Maybe they will remain in Launceston to create a Derby. Very divided State and the Hawks have built up a following up North
