Serious question: do we have anyone on the list who is this type of FIGJAM as a personality?

I think it would be good to have one, especially as a small forward.

I really can't think of anyone like that at Carlton.

Those types are only valuable if they have the talent to back it up. I think the way the elite pathways are operating these days, the top end players tend to be a lot more grounded and mature, and the arrogant w***ers tend not to have the skill level to match their ego.

I reckon Williams has one of those spots nailed if he's fit. His form was unreal at times last year, plus love the fact he can mark overhead and crumb.

Motop has the 2nd spot for mine. If he can get back to 2023 form, he's our most dangerous pure crumber. One of very few players on our list who can make something out of nothing.

Then I'd go Fog or Cotts for the 3rd spot. Whilst both Mots and Williams can apply pressure it's not their 1-wood. Need a more defensively minded forward to balance them out. I'd lean towards Fog.

I don't love Durdin and Motlop playing together. Both really pure forward pockets, neither provide anything overhead and both can go missing. We seem to struggle when playing several of these types together. I prefer Mots because he's far more dangerous.

Elijah at high half forward is about as big a lock as you can get. Then you have Harry, Charlie and either Moir/Kemp.
Durdin's a midfielder shoehorned into the forward pocket.

IMHO, these are fallacies

Other clubs in our position (non rebuild years), don't rush young players if the side is playing poorly and or below expectations

It starts with tweaks to the gameplan/tactics, together with player buy in and continuity

You only need to reference the back half of 2023
"don't rush young players if the side is playing poorly and or below expectations" - in the past this may have been true, but recently - who have we rushed in Ollie and who else?

Our young players have had time to learn in the VFL and some of them are ready for more opportunities at the AFL level

Some of our young players haven't even found consistency in the VFL and have a number of seasoned/better output players in front of them

Wilson is a prime example, where Saad, Doc, Gov, Cowan, Newman, Boyd, Ollie, Cincotta are well ahead of him

Binns is the only player that has not been given the opportunities he deserved. Durdin and Hollands have been played when form and confidence didn't warrant it (Cerra and Cotrel were brought back when they should have found touch in the reserves).

Binns needed to work on aspects of his game, but continues to improve

It's certainly strange times

Last year it was about the likes of Cincotta, Boyd, now they are the forgotten and the focus is on the next "they deserve a game and or we would be better if players X Y Z were given the opportunity"

The Kid was killing it in the 2s. Sure there were things he needed to improve, but after Ollies getting 8 possessions in the first 2 games he should have sent back to the 2s top work out how to get involved.

This "he has things he needs to work on" is too often just an excuse not to reward great form in the seconds. The teams shouldn't be like the Australian Cricket team where it is harder to get in than get out. We need to reward excellence in the 2s and react to underperformance in the 1s

Let's wait and see how it plays out, but I still find it amusing that the rhetoric has changed with the likes of Cincotta, to the next series of young players that should be given a go

I've heard that Moir has done some freakish stuff at training and just looks over as if to say, I know...

Who doesn’t like a shiny new toy let’s be honest. We all do, hence why younger names are being thrown around. But we all know that doesn’t always translate to being automatically named in the side but it shouldn’t be a surprise to any of us

We've had guys play early, Walsh, Ollie, Cowan, but it shouldn't be a prerequisite

Agreed!

It will show itself in round one when Doc gets picked to start on the wing and Ollie doesn't get a game.

Sure there is a difference but until you are given a chance you don't know. Sometimes players find it easier in the 1s.

New season we will see if Cincotta deserves his go ahead of Cowan or Wilson. i am happy if he gets first crack in the preseason. Started last season so well that teams worked out a plan. Lets see how he adapts

I think only Moir and Jagga and maybe Wilson. I want to see more than just a running machine off HB or the wing...

Of the younger guys, 21 and under in order, I've got the following. Based on a mixture of talent, readiness and available positions. Of course it can change quickly

Ollie
Cowan
Jagga
Motlop
Moir
Lord
Binns
Lucas/Ben
Wilson/HOK
Lemmey

The rest

Hang on? Are you saying our opinions on here don't have any baring on selection

100%. This "work on" crap annoys me

If we didn't pick players because of weaknesses in their game we would never pick a side.

Motlop had an impressive 2023 that gets completely glossed over on here in the eagerness for a pile on.
I wasn't a massive buyer of his stocks in 2023 either tbf. Have always rated Dudes the better prospect but he's been well off that form since his run of injuries.

I just want both of them to have consistent years where they can be quality contributors. The small fwd is a dire list hole of ours in trying to win a flag.

With some players it's ebbs and flows, and we know progression isn't linear

Both Motlop & Durdin have had injury interrupted careers

Hopefully they can stay healthy, so we get a better idea of their capabilities
