On the skills training, or lack thereof, I wouldn't expect to see loads of it now if Russells recent interview is anything to go off.

Essentially fitness and then a 2nd dose of fitness is the emphasis or early pre-season then once the fitness base is up to a point the skills training is integrated. He liked starting pre-season earlier meaning skills can be started earlier - though recently everyone starts at the same time so it's not the advantage is once was.

In any case, lack of skills training isn't a concern at this point. If it was Feb and it was still on the backburner then I'd feel worse about it, but right now not so much.

No one else seems to have mentioned his name but a player that has really impressed me so far is Lucas Camporeale. He’s calm, smart, and just makes the right decisions. Looks mature beyond his years

100% agree.

Not a bad kick either.

Lord is a gem and Jagga will be a superstar he has ‘it’.

I’ve seen a bit of Lucas. Made mention at the time he was drafted that his calmness and foot skills would transfer nicely to the AFL. There is a lot to like about Lucas. Genuine playmaker from the wing. Give him a year or two and he should Hopefully be playing a few games.

I have also nominated Billy Wilson as my smoky for the year. If he is injury free he will push very hard for a spot in our best 23. Quick. Nice kick. Could surprise..

He's probably the 'newbie' I'm most excited about seeing make the side. Has all the attributes we really need.

I wouldnt be surprised if he leapfrogs Binns for a wing spot. Binns has been awesome but I could see Lucas with his extra size and strength overhead being appealing. We seem to prioritise the defensive aspects of the wing role over the offensive.

Think it comes down to recruitment & drafting rather than training. Played a lot of footy & very rarely did I, or anyone I played with, improve their skills consistently over their career - besides set shot kicking.

Can practice your kicking & handballing as much as you want out on the track, but under the pressure of game day, it almost always reverted back to the natural skill level. Reckon investing in skills for hours on end on the track is a bit of a waste, go with pressure drills & leave it up to the players to work on them there.

Having said that, there's definitely a few AFL players that have turned it around.

Jobe Watson is one.
Cripps' kicking this year was sublime, very underrated how much that improved.

I don't agree. There have been so many players improve their skills once into a full time AFL environment. Almost every u18 has improved out of sight after 2 or 3 years. Even a genrally good kick like Weitering went through that horror year where he couldn't hit a target. The more hours invested into kicking the better.

The thing that annoys me a lot is that they rarely seem to address kicking technique.

Local Golf pros exist the world over and spend all of their time working with golfers of all ages/levels to change/ improve their technique.

Why is kicking this special thing where you never fix a flaw in a technique? You just practice your mistakes more and more.

Buddy Franklin could have kicked another couple hundred goals with a technique where he didn't kick around the corner.

Although I will say Harry did clearly straighten up his technique last season and it showed on the scoreboard. But that was an exception to the rule.

The first thing I'd do with Ben C is send him to an intensive kicking coach for a month and make him sort out the obvious flaw - that almost 2 handed drop he does which makes him kick off his instep when under pressure.

I'm with ya Soap, reckon he's the one that completely flew under the radar. Tested brilliantly in the vertical jump at the combine, so hopefully translates into being strong overhead. He's a leftie as well, which me likes a lot.

Just going by this clip, shows he's more than capable in a marking contest....well, I'm pretty sure it's Lucas....

Maybe but positive is Binns looks great as well

I love competition for spots 😎
