Sticks mastered the helicopter. Maybe Ben will too?
Sticks played as a key forward where his kicking skills didn't matter anywhere near as much, and in a far less skillful era.

Kicking skills are critical to making it as a midfielder. Have to atleast be at a Josh Dunkley standard to make it as a mid in today's game imo, no matter how good the rest of ur game is.

Agree with everything you have said other than describing the 80’s are a far less skilful era. Simply not true.

Carlton’s midfield of 79-82 of Sheldon, Buckley, Ashman, etc were all highly skilled players and far better kicks on both sides than Cripps, Walsh, Hewett. Only Cerra would be comparable to 8-10 in that side. Not one Carlton Back in this team would come close to Bruce Doull’s delivery.

Every facet of the game has improved and todays players would obviously comfortably beat teams of the past but that is because of tactics, fitness and conditioning, definitely not because they are more skilful.

I still watch modern games and think how can they train so much yet still can’t kick or handball.

I don't disagree with the idea that players in the 80s appeared to hit more targets and spent more time on working on both sides of their body. But ultimately it's because the speed and pressure of the game today is at such a level that it's almost impossible to take the time to steady and pick out targets like they were able to back in the day.

Hitting targets through elite zone defenses is an absolute nightmare and nothing compared to the open free flowing games of yesteryear.

Just my take on it at least.

They were bloody good back in the 70's and 80's. It was a great era in the game.
Great runs, high marks, rough and tough. It had a lovely flow and tempo.

Everything changes of course and sadly the modern game resembles overly tactical breakneck rugby if you ask me.

Still Carna Blues

Game as a spectacle much better back then and my favourite time was the late 90s. Since the 2000s numbers dropping back has reduced those moments of one on ones and the sheer pressure on the defender to clear the danger, not to mention the forward being a hero one out. Silvagni vs Lockett just an incredible spectacle of survival mode.

Now there is a lack of one-on-ones everywhere meaning Mcgovern, Weitering, Kemp & Young can high five each other in sympathy as a goal goals through as the blame is unclear. Hate that a lot.A lot of defenders moving away from holding the mark as that identifies culprits. Even see Weitering do this on occasion. I'm not knocking Weiters too much here as it was probably a hand off issue and he got left high and dry. I just hated seeing him veer away from the mark (seen it twice).

In the 90s I'd say this game was the best spectacle in the world of sport. Now, this game is full of holes and confusing to outsiders. For me it is now just reasonable sport/spectacle and its just about supporting my team to win a flag. The game needs less players to increase one-on-ones and reduce congestion as today's players cover the ground so well now on fitness improvements. Fatigue stopping 18 (down to 16 on field) players covering the entire ground would be a good thing. But the 18 on field is sacrosanct and no one would have the balls to do it.

Something Carlton FC can do that my club can’t and that is trying to convince the AFL to make The Good Friday game between both our clubs better.

Maybe the following things can be done.

1:A VFL game to be played before the main game to get the crowd in early to raise hopefully more $$$$ for the kids plus it gives young and up n coming players from both clubs a chance to play in front of a big crowd.
2: Pre or Half time entertainment a fellow called Robbie Williams could be approached and we know which team he supports.

3:A combined efforts of both Cheer Squads to raise funds for the kids maybe can go old school like the old days like people throwing coins in to the blanket that used to get carried around the ground at Half time like it use to happen.
4:Make it the 3rd biggest game of the year behind
1:The AFL Grand Final.
2:Anzac Day.
Now with that you could tell me to piss off or kind agree that this match could get better.

I think this is something that is very much on Brian Cook’s “to do list”
Carlton have long had the traditional “season opener” against Richmond (discounting the new northern gimmick) as a “marquee” game but during Cook’s tenure have added Good Friday against North and Kings Birthday Eve against * as “marquee” games as well.
I’m certain these games will be developed further as time goes on and Cook hands over the reigns to Wright going forward into the future …

Hey guys! This might be a bit of a stab in the dark, but just thought I'd put it out there in case any Blues fans could shed some light.

A family member was op shopping and across these boots.
Does anybody know if they were indeed player worn, and if so, by whom and when??

Thanks in advance for anybody with any info.

IF they are player worn, it was quite a while ago with that rounded monogram. The other printing could be 1 and a modified AW, which (again) COULD be Andrew Walker. All I have…

So the HS have a ladder predictor today for the first 6 rounds (and opening round). They predict that we will lose 1 game in the first 6.... to the filth!? However, then in their ladder they show us as 4-2??? Maybe they are predicting our child abuse of the Tig's in round 1 will cause the AFL to strip us of the points and award the Tigers the win??

Lemmey looks to be moving better than I have seen him previously

Jagga's moments and IQ is impressive for a player of his age

Elijah really does look comfortable both sides of his body, also looks leaner in the right areas
At some point next year there is going to be a head line that the tigers stuffed up bigtime overlooking jagga. Whether it ends up being the case long term, is another matter, but they will be struggling and whilst Lalor will show glimpses forward, they will miss having a Jagga type that could have slotted straight into their midfield getting 25+.

Agree, though Tigs aren't interested in the short term. They know they're in for a few hard years. Will load up again at this year's draft if they can, and hope that group of young players will see them through the Tassie years, and be back in contention for 2028+ Remains to be seen if that happens.

Jagga looks the perfect pick for us though, will hit the ground running.

Yeah thats true. I dont have an issue with their approach. Made the most of a bad situation.

Though from experience, its easy to forget the "long term view" when you are getting belted week after week. Journos will go from saying they won the draft, to saying they cut to deep. They did go for a fair few lower floor higher ceiling types. Will be interesting how that works out long term.

I would have taken Lalor at pick 1 too, but very happy with Jagga at 3

From watching various rebuilds over the years my take is that early on in the rebuild l want players that are reliable and set standards with work ethic etc. Guys like Sam Walsh are great early in a rebuild.

If the players you take, take a long time to come on, or have work rate problems that need to be overcome it can set the rebuild back and make things more difficult for club and coach.

I love the look of lalor but it’s a bit of a riskier approach the tigers have taken putting greater emphasis on ceiling rather than floor. For me, theres more risk than l would like in there early picks of smiley and lalor.

Who knows though, they may be the best picks of the draft.

Exactly right. I expect players like Jagga and Draper to contest for this years rising star. They were much better prepared than Lalor who never ever even had a preseason due to cricket commitments. Jagga, who had already finished school in 2023 committed to footy training like a true professional and thus gave himself the best possible chance to go high in the draft. He certainly leaves no stone unturned. He is a beauty.
For the tigs though, they needed a power player having lost Dusty. Jagga's 70 kg 181cm body didn't give them that. Lalor did. We were incredibly lucky to pick up Smillie too. At nearly 196cm and with great mobility, the two will provide years of power and class but are longer term prospects than Jagga.
I really thought you guys were going for Draper who gives added speed and is also ready to go but you couldn't go wrong with either.
Good luck for 2025.
