What a heart-stopping but magnificent win against the Melbourne Demons in round 1. Missing a couple of key players especially Jesse Hogan and Keiren Briggs, but regaining Tom Green for the mid-field battle, it was a see-sawing battle in the first half, then we were behind for all of the second half until that final clutch goal by Lachie Keeffe inside the last minute. Importantly, it sees us sitting 2-0 to start the season, against two teams who are likely top 8 contenders, so a good position for the Giants to be in.

The boys now have a fortnight break until our next game against the high-flying Hawks. For us it means a chance for our injury list to heal itself, and also the majority of our suspended players to be available again. Given that we played that (wet) game with just the one tall (Aaron Cadman - who held his own in the circumstances) and Callum Brown (still dropping marks inside 50), it will be a certainty that Hogan comes into the side. The question will be whether Stringer does too, and if so, who does he replace - Keeffe (after his heroics) or Brown? Hogan, Cadman, Stringer and Keeffe just seems too tall to me, but Kingers won't want to drop Keeffe after that lion-hearted effort.

The small forwards actually didn't do as well as I expected. Jones was held a bit (both literally, by Demons players at times, and figuratively). Binga went off injured, but hopefully he'll be OK after some rest. Toby was magnificent; he stood tall as captain in that last quarter, playing a lot of midfield time. The medium forward Brown competed well, and was excellent as the chop-out ruck, but again dropped some gettable marks inside 50.

Finn Callaghan was outstanding again in the middle; just has the ball on a string and his running game is breathtaking. Tom Green was strong in the hard ball game, while Josh Kelly complemented them nicely. Toby Bedford defended soundly, and will be required to tag Will Day in 2 weeks. Stephen Coniglio is still down on form, but his 3 goals were as important as they were impressive, while Xavier O'Halloran had his usual mix of good and bad. I expect that they will all feature against the Hawks, but James Leake had a quiet game and might well make way as others come into the team.

I think defence is set, and although Connor Idun had a poor game (poorly directed fists led to 2 Demon goals), there won't be any changes there. Conor Stone was sound without being great again, but he just needs to play first grade and build both his confidence and his skills.

So, who comes in apart from Hogan, Briggs and possibly Stringer? Riccardi - no, Fonti - no; Harvey Thomas and Toby McMullin possibly - but who goes out? We were down on tall forwards for this game, which I can't see Kingers replicating when guys are available. So, Hogan replaces Gru (but comes into the starting line-up), Briggs for Leake essentially, Stringer for Keeffe or Brown. Personally, despite Lachie's heroics and Brown's ongoing butter-fingers, the best set-up would be Brown (to create 3 talls, 1 medium, and 3 smalls). Cadman and Brown can take the secondary ruck duels. That means for me there is no room for Thomas or McMullin to break into a twice-winning team in my mind.

Depending on how Kingers sees the structural importance, I also wonder if Wehr - who to me would be a candidate to drop back into the sub role - might hold his spot on one wing, in which case it could be Brown or O'Halloran who drop back to that sub role.

So, this is what I'm thinking at present:

Himmelberg Taylor Idun
Ash Buckley Whitfield
Kelly Callaghan Ward
Daniels Cadman Stringer
Jones Hogan Greene
Briggs Green Bedford

Stone O'Halloran Coniglio Brown
Sub: Wehr

Hawthorn will have the luxury of playing next week, so will be well battle-hardened by the time our round 3 game arrives. And we never do well off a bye, so it's a real clutch game for us (away in Tasmania, too!). They play Thursday, so will be well-rested, and we can only hope that Carlton provide more opposition to them than training cones ... denting their confidence and roughing them up a bit would be useful to us. The Hawks mids and defenders are proving to be excellent; while their forwards are making do with a mix of Mabior Chol and their small forward brigade (Dylan Moore, Jack Ginnivan and the Wizard), so we will need to be sharp in taking them on. Let's analyse the Hawks-Blues game next Thursday, and come back for more discussion on their game play.

What are your thoughts?

Id swap Wehr and Brown. Think Browns athleticism can hurt when comes on late.

Himmelberg Taylor Idun
Ash Buckley Whitfield
Kelly Callaghan Coniglio
Daniels Cadman Stringer
Jones Hogan Greene
Briggs Green Bedford

Stone O'Halloran Ward Gruzewski/Riccardi (might be 1 too many changes)
Sub: Wehr/McMullin/Thomas (I think Wehr keeps his spot)

Post match Kingas said we will get Hogan, Briggs and Stringer back, Daniels will be fine and the McMullin/Thomas would be available suggesting maybe not straight into the side. Also said cogs is playing wing/forward cause of his shoulder to ease him back into it and will end up playing inside mid again. No issues with his form just a different role.

I’d like to see McMullin/Thomas start to put some serious pressure on Wardy for his spot. Would mean we are in a really good spot.

Yeah, cogs looks underdone physically …. Not cooked. Let him play the nick Daicos bruise free role for a few weeks

Cogs has been super important in loads of scores, he is playing on the outside and not his normal role, but his composure and contest (and touch of class) has been really important.

I think we'll definitely see Briggs, Hogan and Stringer come back in.

Keefe, Gru, and Brown to come out.

They did their job and did really well, but the guys coming in are better. 3 like for like changes.

Wehr has done a great job in the first 2 games but is clearly behind the others coming into the year and will drop out.

Leake most likely the same, will fall out.

Im thinking we will bring in McMullen and H Thomas, one of them to be the sub.

Leake might hold one of those 2 outs.

Like the last two seasons id expect we build towards being in best shape leading to finals. Selection has always rewarded form, so I couldn't see Stone being nudged by anybody who hasn't played yet. Ward has started like he finished last year so unless he feels he needs a rest I can't see him going out. If Cogs can kick 2 a game he holds his spot until he is confident to get CBA's again. Given the role Leake has played I think he is the one to go out for Stringer. Then it's probably a decision as Brown or Keefe for back up ruck, Lachie has probably done more to keep his spot. Gru for Hogan.

I would expect three changes for this week, but it's unlikely Lachie Keeffe will be one of the outs. Not just because of yesterday's heroics, but Kingsley obviously likes the versatility he brings to the squad and the back-up ruck support he offers to Briggs. He's probably slightly ahead of Max Gruzewski in the pecking order (for now).

Callum Brown has been okay in our two matches, but probably hasn't done enough to thwart off the returning Jake Stringer. To be fair, Callum has had some tough conditions to clunk big marks, hot and humid one week, cold and wet the next. Despite those mitigating factors, I think he will make way for Stringer. We know what Jake can do up forward, but I'm more excited to see him attend some centre bounces as well, where his power and size makes him a tough opponent. We saw yesterday that big, powerful mids can still get a hold of us at centre clearances, so beefing up this area will make us a better team.

James Leake had a very quiet day playing mostly forward and is the obvious one to make way for Jesse Hogan.

IN: Briggs, Stringer, Hogan
OUT: Gruzewski, Brown, Leake

Harvey Thomas and Toby McMullin are now available, but should have to earn their way back into a winning team. The most vulnerable players these two are trying to replace are Xavier O'Halloran and Jacob Wehr, but both have done enough to keep their spot for the match against Hawthorn.

Think I agree with all this, with the only caveat being that we may end up running with Gru instead of Keeffe to avoid being too tall up forward. But it would be very hard to drop Keeffe after his heroics yesterday.

Wehr and XOH should keep their spots to avoid making too many changes all at once to a winning team.

This is going to be a big game for us and the most dangerous game for the start of our season. Hawthorn are looking red hot at the moment, but if we can knock them off I think we will easily get to 5-0 to start off the season with games against West Coast and St Kilda coming up next.

I dont think we can bring in 3 talls for a mid, a medium and a tall who was sub.

means we have 3 more talls than we had on the weekend and 2 more than usual.

If he wants to play Keefe it'll have to be at the expense of Stinger or Cadman, I cant see that happening.

Is Stringer really a tall though? He's only a few cm taller than Leake or Brown and what I've seen of him in the past he seems to play like a medium forward who can also play as a midfielder. Our website has him listed as a medium forward.

So Adam's set up would give us exactly the same number of tall forwards that we took into finals last year. Hogan, Cadman and Keeffe.

I don't see it that way. Kingsley has had a consistent formula of playing three tall forwards with one of them playing ruck chop-out to support Briggs. Late last year when we had a full strength team that combo was Briggs, Keeffe (Riccardi before his injury), Hogan and Cadman. Generally, only three of those four are ever on the field at the same time. It'll just be a question of who is chosen to support Briggs (Keeffe, Gruzewski or Riccardi).

Leake might be a midfielder by trade, but he played as a forward yesterday and only spent limited time in the midfield once Gruzewski came on to replace Daniels. Tom Green essentially took his inside mid spot from the OR side.

Maybe, but we shouldn't use the two games this year as a guide. Briggs has barely been on the field so we've seen a lot of Keeffe out there.

When Briggs is fit he plays a lot of game time, so Keeffe probably ends up spending 1/4 of the game or so at ruck and 1/4 of the game forward (when Hogan or Cadman are having a spell). I looked at the finals games last year and Keeffe was only on the field just over 50% of the time. Briggs was around 75%.

It will be interesting to see if Gruzewski has gone ahead of Keeffe in the pecking order. He definitely offers more as a forward, but the stats show he's going to get limited time playing there if Hogan and Cadman are in the team as well.

Is that just cause Keefe doesn’t give much as a forward. If Gruz could hold his own as a forward in sure he would get more game time there than Keefe was getting last year

I think Gru offers more but that doesn’t take anything away from the King and his willingness to do whatever he is asked

It's more to do with the balance of the team. Hogan and Cadman (Hogan in particular) spend a lot of time on the field. In Jesse's case it's close to 90%. Kingsley's method seems to rely on two tall targets up forward and a bunch of medium/smalls ready to pounce if the ball isn't marked.

It'll come down to what's more important for team balance. A stronger ruck back-up (Keeffe) or a stronger third tall forward (Gruzewski)? We don't know the answer yet because we haven't had a fully fit squad to pick from.
