From the look of his stats in the VFL Hamilton seems to be playing wing. Am I wrong?

I'm happy with Angwin on the wing. Wehr back for me.

He's solid and hardworking. That'll do
I think this is right, but I also thought he might have been working as a smaller lockdown defender too. It's certainly smart for him to develop that into his game.

I didn't mind him when we saw him play his 4 games last year, where it looked like it was that defensive wing role. Certainly didn't set the world on fire, but there's definitely potential there.

Hard to make a case for him above Wehr or Angwin at the moment though.

So, Hawthorn are the best 'effort' team in the comp at the moment.

But they aren't the cleanest.

We will get beat if we don't bring the effort, but we should win if we play hard AND clean.

It's a good sign if we can get it done. But if we lose pressure in the middle and our heads drop, reckon we might be in for a rude shock.

I guess I could have said contest, but there's something specific I'm trying to ping here. It was us in some of those close losses in the first half of the season last year. And given we're missing some of our midfield class, contest/effort/pressure footy in the middle will go a long way.

Tom Green needs to be a monster for us to win I reckon.

Tom Green has come back to the field a fair bit recently. Basically since he talked himself up over Rowell as a junior. Then Rowell smacked him the following week.

Hey sorry for the intrusion. But I presume you mean the hunger around the contest in post clearance which Hawthorn are number 1 in?

It’s definitely a strength, GWS will need to use their pace and skill, Hawthorn also like this, playing with pace and running but they’ve tended to kick more than handball and rely on skill more as the development continues, ontop of contest work and clearance work (a lot of score recently from stoppage). With Coniglio and Kelly out, Green will be key, as will Callaghan through the middle, Ward as some experience and Whitfield off half back.

Hawthorn set two structures up which I had a scribble of, I won’t post the pictures as it might be a little too much but short term, unless there is interest. Hawthorn run a diamond shape around the ball, which has been a key part of winning contest and pressuring contest. The other being a triangle mini zone which floats behind ball side (naturally occurring as apart of the bigger defensive structures) which sets the interceptor and runners in best position for quick turnover and or spread.

But I’m excited to see Callaghan with more exposure in the middle and most responsibility.

Interesting about the diamond set up … I’ll watch for it

This is the triangle thing I was talking about.

This is the diamond, the shape around the ball. D1 to ball carrier and also covers right in the cyclone, which goes around and covers each man if needed, the man out wide holds width and can go forward or back, he is diagonal off the contest. Green is defenders, yellow is ball.

I disagree. He is fast enough both to the eye and according to his test results.

The 5:48 that has been quoted was run by Hamilton at the Combine and in his draft notes (which quotes the 5:48) under weakness it says speed and that’s the exactly how he looks when he plays if you watch. Endurance but not speed. Nothing has changed.

I had been thinking that it was time for Bedford to have a rest to try and find some form but I think the new interpretation of holding the ball might bring him into games more.

His tackling will get more reward and with players having to release the ball quicker, his speed around the contest will be invaluable.

Tom Green will have to make some adjustments because he won’t get the freedom to have blokes hanging off him

I'd suggest Thomas for sub.

Exactly the list I was hoping for (other than Buckley not being ready yet).

Meek not returning will be huge for us, looking forward to watching Briggs dominate Reeves with his strength.

McMullin as sub.
That’s going to be a big factor in this game. Their mids probably have the edge over us but Briggs should be the dominant ruckman and even up the midfield considerably.

Our ability to defend their smalls will be fascinating too
