So it’s most likely they’d match, but it doesn’t happen because of the aesthetics….

My take is it’s extremely rare that a club will match despite the threat that they will/could.
They don’t go through the public process of “Danger accepts Geelong’s offer but Adelaide force him to stay. Danger hates Adelaide so demands they still trade him. Adelaide fold to the demand despite having a contracted player and begrudgingly make the trade.”

They chat behind the scenes and ask if they’d match and they say yes, because the compo isn’t enough. They say fair enough and work out a trade instead of going through the rest of it.

The Rowell rumour is interesting. I wonder what it would take to make happen.
If Allan comes on and exceeds expectations, or, in the unlikely event Long shows signs for being a gun mid, where would you rank him as a target?

I believe he is more Mitchell like than Allan / Long and a perfect pairing with Daicai.

They would have to have outstanding seasons to get a late first round pick for one of them.

Geelong trade smart, they trade for players that are out of contract, and get the media on side so they pay unders at the trade table.

Rhetoric such as threat of the pre season draft and losing them for nothing is only ever brought up when Geelong are trading.

Look at the smith and Henry deals and how the media handled those.

I think you’re rewriting history with your Dangerfield take. I’ll leave it there.

Even if any of this is accurate, having salary cap space isn’t exactly the same as being able to acquire RFA’s who the clubs will most likely match and force a trade. I honestly wouldn’t want the club offering 1.5m per year to price out other clubs, even for Bont.

I think the more realistic target is Ed Richards who the doggies may see fit to let go for a R1 compo pick and wouldn’t blow up our salary cap in the process.

I am still into Sam De Koning if he’s available for trade like the rumours suggested he might’ve been last year.

Rowell and LDU aren’t impossible but I wouldn’t do it through blowing up the salary cap. Get them at 900k-1m and pay the price at the trade table. Don’t want Petracca at his age, as good as he is (was?).
It's good to dangle the carrot to force clubs into matching the offer and it helps to price them out of other interests we have now or in the following years. I'd only be up for paying the 1.5m for a Bont for example if an Ed Allan breaks into the starting 18. And Tom McGuage emerges as a top 10 prospect, because they will be cheap on the books, and not much of a downgrade on 2 retiring players final years output. Then Bont would be an upgrade on a Michell or Siddebottom, equivalent to Houston to Nobel or even more. But I'd also be equally as happy with getting 3 players at Perrymans level as well.
To your point, an Ed Richards style arrangement would be the most enticing definitely

Was talking to someone involved in the draft who believes Mcguane will end up as a top 10 prospect. Which probably means we may have to offer a club a F2 for a 2025 second rounder. But of course that doesn't include if there are players that want a trade and we can get points that way.

Hope Tommy is that good!

Jen, do you know if the same rules apply for future years’ trading in that you must retain either your 1st / all of your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc?

what we know.

+ the draft points index (and reducing discount to 10%)
2025 changes

Draft value index (DVI)/bidding system

New framework for the DVI/bidding system will be implemented aiming to restore fair value.

The new DVI will see points allocated up until the end of the natural third round. (Link to new DVI model)

A 10% discount will be applied on all bids from selection 1 to 18 followed by an 84-point deduction (being 10% of selection 18) for all bids from selection 19 to 36.

Matching a bid - first round: Matched using equivalent DVI points.

Matching a bid - after first-round:

Matched using equivalent DVI points up to selection 36.

Match with next selection from selection 37.

Restriction on Northern Academies: There will be no restrictions based on ladder finishing position for Northern Academy clubs.

Future pick trading

From 2025, Clubs will be able to trade future draft selections up to two years in advance subject to the following AFL imposed protections:

Clubs must use two first round selections every four years.

Clubs must have board approval to trade any first round selections.

For second year only: Clubs must hold the full suite of draft selections (2nd and 3rd round selections) to trade their first round selections and vice versa.

Lot of water to flow under that bridge before we need get too concerned.

I think it's unlikely that Allen or Long reach Rowell's quality - which isn't to say they can't or won't be any good. I don't think they figure in a decision to go after Rowell's or not. They'd be a happy bonus if they come on.

We should have a good idea by the end of the year - I’m optimistic on Allan
Rowell's is a really high bar. Amongst a handful of the leagues best. Allan could exceed expectations and still fall short of that.

That's my point. Rowell's is such a high quality target that I doubt other players progress effects our decision to pursue or not.

The happy possibility is we have Daicos, get Rowell's and have Allen come on. That would take some beating.

Allan will come on.

Rowell would be a great get but we also enquired about Humphrey during the trade period so he might be another option for us

Very different types, but either would be a great get (as would Ed Richards!). Rowell is obviously more proven and has some genuinely elite traits in an area of clear need for us. But Humphrey is that match winning type who could be a proper cult hero and become a real attacking weapon. I'm a fan and I think he looks like a Collingwood player, if that makes sense.

Needs to regrow the mullet though. That new haircut is far too conservative for his playing style.
