Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

Heppell was great on the show.
Loved the way he talked about the GWS game, and about his girlfriend.
Hopefully he becomes a regular. :thumbsu:

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

Interesting list produced by Stevens - Agree with Lamaros that you can only compare year by year - Top 5 players who joined a list in 2011, etc, etc, etc.

In saying that, I wouldn't have Reid as No 1 in that list.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

I'm really worried about Heppell's upside.
I mean, the kid can only find the ball 25 times a game, kick goals, find space anywhere, kick beautifully, run himself out of trouble, chop off attacks and turn it the other way. And he's 19, so clearly this is as good as it gets.
Dud.
Should trade while his value's high.

Seriously. Sam Reid is a good prospect but he's still a prospect. He's kicked 22 goals FFS, his year was no better than Gumby's 2010.
Dyson Heppell is a star. The end.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

I was at The Footy Show last night on the table next to Dyson's girlfriend Kate, her sister & his brother, Jamin.

They were really lovely although Kate seemed a little embarrassed at the attention she was receiving. They even got stuck into her during the commercial breaks but Dyson just laughed it off.

Dyson seemed really professional on the show. I hope he becomes a regular.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

Heppell wasn't fit, he wasn't strong and he wasn't experienced. He used is natural gifts to player as a sweeper and win a rising star in the process. The club is now looking to move him into the midfield.
He rang a 15 in the beep test upon arrival at the club.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

There's something oddly endearing about Cloke, though. Almost as though he's completely aware that he's an intellectual mouse and that he's going to work within that.
I actually quite like Big Trav.

Seems like a pretty genuine bloke.

Well, he's not a smartarse purely because he lacks the capacity.

The 5 dollar thing is easy to make fun of but at least it's something that he's come up with that he enjoys that isn't the same vacuous bullshit that most footballers talk about.

Heppell's hair though is registering on the farce scale. Looked so much better circa the Geelong game. Got to be more practical, too.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

Speaking of, I know it's particularly unfortunate circumstances, but TFS works far better without Lyon. I typically wouldn't watch it or would turn off fairly quickly (although Lyon's Stynes testimonial was quite powerful), but it was almost back to working on a base level with just Brayshaw, Newman, and panel.

I was thinking the same thing. Although I'm not sure if it was just Gary missing, or the fact there were only 2 hosts. I wouldn't mind seeing an episode without Brayshaw just for interest sakes.

Impressive.

It was purely a general comment about the fitness of a first year player. I'd expect that he is fitter this year than he was last year but that he still won't have the running capacity required to be a full time mid because basically no 19 to 20 year old ever has.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

I thought he was noticeably struggling in some games last year. Particularly towards the end of the year. Kept expecting him to grind to a halt but he kept coming back up.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Not in the top 5 Rising Stars of 2012 according to Mark Stevens

He was good against WC, and solid, I think, against PA.

Robbo-like comma'ing there.

I think that players playing every game of the year is going to progressively happen less and less. There's the development aspect, sure, but they're just going to need the rest TBH. It's good though, because it allows other players to notch up senior experience as well.

Level 15 on the beep test is about 15mins. And AFL game is... longer.

Not saying he's not fit, but beep test fitness and running out an AFL game fitness are very different things. Your body isn't going to adjust overnight.

So why can't players run a 80 or 100 on a beep test?

I know what you're saying, they're different things, but it's still a very good indication of his aerobic fitness.

Because you have to run further every step.

The beep test isn't designed to measure fitness over time, it's designed to give a guide to VO2 max.

I - unfortunately - haven't seen a lot of Heppell live, so I'm not sure about his fitness. However I did see a lot of Melksham live, and he was nowhere near fit enough to run out games in his first season. Melksham ran a 14.5 beep test before he was drafted, but it meant very little in the short term.

I did a 14.7 years ago and by that point its almost full on accelerating and then sprinting. But it's still only 15 minutes or so, which is obviously not even remotely similar to the length of a footy game.

It's highly correlated to overall fitness levels - particularly for players who have undergone a number of preseasons - but it cannot be used by itself as a measure of fitness particularly for players in their first season.

Look I'm not disagreeing with any of that, my point simply was - and still is - that it's a very fair reflection on player's fitness base.

Things like rotations obviously make a massive difference.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Fitness levels in 2011/2012

Heppell and his whole family are fitness freaks. At my uni there is a fellow Phd student who grew up in the same town as the Heppells. His father, I think mother too, was a fitness fanatic and made sure all his kids were too from a young age. Dyson will of course have to keep working hard on his fitness if he's going to bulk up and carry the bigger frame around for a whole game though.

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Fitness levels in 2011/2012

Another season of 22 games and finals should we make it will only further disprove Steven's rubbish article! Reid 'could' be a star (shot on goal is appalling), Heppell is proving it right now that he will be! :D

Re: #21: Dyson Heppell - Fitness levels in 2011/2012

There's something oddly endearing about Cloke, though. Almost as though he's completely aware that he's an intellectual mouse and that he's going to work within that.

Two amazing things about the Cloke performance, or two highlights rather:

1. If you fold any note of legal tender, any Australian note of legal tender, in from each side, the outer sides match up! Yes Travis, that's because they're all printed on a big sheet and then sliced up. You numpty.

2. Travis, when describing Dane Swan's new tats, pointed to the back of his hand, identifying the "palm", and then proceeded to point to where Swan hasn't got any tattoos, around the wrist region... near the "collar". I shudder to think where he believes the human, male penis to be.

As a bonus, he's got a tattoo of an infinity sign behind his ear, because life goes on and that reminds him of that fact. I daresay he pointed towards that area, asking that it be put on his "ankle".

Anyway... Hep was good, but then he's been fairly composed in all of his media appearances. Good country lad, as he says.

I know some topologists who would get very excited about this. Choke's observation is that bank notes are closed, genus 1 surfaces - toruses. :D
