Retired #21: Dyson Heppell - Goodnight, sweet prince. What a legend! 🤙 - 24/8

Went back with the flight about 4 times, and was robbed of the mark of the night when the ****wit in green didn't pay it.

Just throwing this out there to counter the nonsense from BT that he didn't go hard enough at one of those marks.

I started to read the autopsy thread. I can't believe on the first page there was all this bagging of Heppell as some sort of soft outside player. Worked well in the congestion and has very very quick hands. Yes he can get better in there but that will come with time as he fills out.

The bagging of his game last night is just ridiculous. He played as a defensive mid on Selwood. He kept Selwood to 19 touches and got 20 of his own. I thought that was a fantastic effort.

Agree with fishardansin on this. What's with people saying he is out of form? He has been one of our best players recently. He was definitely one of our best on Friday.

And how often does he get caught on his left? Most times he spins out of trouble.

Not sure what people expect out of him, I think he's in fantastic form.
He's learning, getting bigger and he's smoother than Max Brennar.

I hope we stop his 'learning' for one week and just play him half back and let myers/hocking/lonergan in the middle with jobe

Disagree with that. We need to get a better balanced midfield with players who use the ball better. We can't go long term with Watson, Hocking, Lonergan and Howlet on the ball and players like Heppell, Dempsey, Dyson and other lightly built quick flankers playing on the wing. We need to persist with players like Zaka and Heppell, also Kav down the track. Once they can compete hard in the contest they wont let us down there and also help us on the spread and with good ball use. They also wont be caught out for pace when the other team wins a clearance and breaks away.

Heppell won't make it as an outside midfelder, unless he improves his speed - Imrovement can be made with specialised training - Played well when he tagged Joel Sellwood - Is more suited to be an inside midfielder - Probably best suited to half back.

The club needs to fast track the defensive side of his game. He losts his man multiple times on the weekend that resulted in marks in the forward 50.

I think fact of the matter is he isn't ready for a mid position yet. Needs a couple more preseasons to build the tank and the body.

Also once (basically our entire midfield in) Stants, Zaka, Myers and of course Howlett are back, he wont have a position in the mid.

Don't rate Embley, Stanton, van Berlo, Rich, Fyfe, Scully, Trengove, Grigg, Dal Santo, or Montagna among others? None of them are overly quick, but play well on the outside. All of these blokes have made it as outside midfielders without great speed, so why can't Heppell?

i'm not sure if it was this thread or some other thread where i said i really wouldn't mind if heppell just stayed being rock solid on the hbf for the rest of his career. but i still feel that way

wouldn't mind it, but we're not exactly flushed with mids are we? and I'm fully confident he can fill the role.
Round 23, he's gotta tag pendles, over the summer he's gotta watch tape of pendles. apart from the core strength and the crazy good game sense (which could definitely come in time) i see a lot of similarities between the two.

I don't think leg speed is an issue although it would help. But like Stanton, brain speed might be, good mids are instinctual, i'm not sure making fast/sound decisions can be taught. Only time will tell if Heppells got what Zaka has in spades.
