Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Lance Franklin
DOB: 30 January 1987

You've heard it here first... Franklin is rumoured to have agreed to join Geelong next year. Reportedly on slightly less than the 500k (lowball offer) that Sydney tabled earlier in the year.

And given Buddy has agreed to get paid unders to keep an amazing group together, Geelong have managed to find enough room in the cap to fit Dusty in as well.

While unconfirmed, our sources suggest Richmond have agreed to pay 95% of his salary over the next two years to get the deal done for Dusty.

Tom Hawkins is not on 300k lmfao

If that story about Hawkins is true, then why wouldn't a team with salary cap space try and blast him out of Geelong?!

Go and offer him 1 mil for the next two seasons and see if you can upset Geelong's cosy little set up down there.

Because he's not just on 300k.

I can believe the 300k figure. Can't be about you at 34 years of age, 35 next year. It's probably more than what Tom would get if he moved on from footy. Doubt many footy players post playing can pull numbers that big doing regular gigs

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. If we win the flag Buddy goes out having delivered over the 9 years, and the premiership is the cherry that caps it off.

Even if we were to lose, I think he'd probably still pull the pin, but going out with a premiership would put the exclamation mark on his career.

And as someone mentioned earlier, I think holding off discussions until the end of the year was all about keeping the focus on the team.

So whatever happens from here, gotta thank the big guy for all the memories.

And I think he'll pull out a couple of special memories in the next couple of games.

Thanks in advance Bud!

4. Is getting something on the side somehow to compensate for it and should be punished for salary cap rots

I have a suspicion that this loophole is a 'dont ask, dont tell' with the AFL, and that every club would have some deals like this. As a NSW club we probably have some 'ambassador' jobs or the like that we may have exploited here or there.

Clubs could potentially cut deals with sponsors to have players on their books for advertising or something and shave some cash off the AFL contract.

AFL just wants good players playing together and not causing a fuss.

What's the consensus ? Buddys last game at the scg? In the red and white ?

Does he hang up the boots?

Right now I'm leaning towards retirement

Yeah think he's done.

Yeah think he's done.
If he has made the decision to retire, I imagine the putting off talks is due to him and the club being well aware of the hysteria and distraction it would cause during the finals campaign.

My only thought would be if he is retiring wish he would have announced it this week and give the opportunity for a sellout scg to show their love, support and appreciation to the great man

I don't think he will have much if any influence on the game, but he could well go another year
I havnt ruled it out but I keep going back to why bother? 36 years old , legacy is set, earnt more money than anyone in the game .

If he was hell bent on playing surely he just goes again in Sydney? Why go to the trouble of moving , learning a new game, meeting new team mates, proving yourself all over again. Not to mention heaping pressure back on your self. Stay at Sydney and no one expects anything, but go somewhere else the results will be expected

I don't recall Buddy ever putting in two consecutive poor performances. A lot has been made of May beating Franklin, and the media writing him off and suggesting his last game was evidence he's 'past it'. Bud is a proud player, and is already a legend of the game, you write him off at your own peril.

I expect him to kick 2-3 goals and have the media do a complete 180 and say "give him another 9 years" and all that sort of stuff.

Bud will put in a performance, it all comes down to how well Moore plays. I have Bud down for 2, he'll kick 3 or 4 if Moore (or Howe?) is having an off night, and Bud will send a reminder to the footy world that there's still plenty left in the tank and that he'll be hanging up his boots on his terms, whether that's in 2022 or beyond.

Great post and I agree. I may be in the minority, but I hope he rolls on again in 2023. Luv the Bud.
