Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Lance Franklin
DOB: 30 January 1987
DEBUT: 2005
DRAFT: #5, 2004 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Dowerin (WA)/Perth (WAFL)/Hawthorn

Doesn't play until Rd 23 in a farewell game I think. If we cop an injury to Amartey, Logan or McLean then I think Buller should be the next cab off the rank.

Agree somewhat, but I dont think Buller automatically assumes the 'next cab' position, Buddy probably offers more than what Buller would. You'd have to give buddy another 2-3 games to give him another chance to provide himself. So injury or poor form and I'd give Buddy a crack, Buller needs to earn his spot.

"Probably" Buller had two or three touches in a full game. That's not his cards marked but buddy unambiguously offers plenty more.

First game with barely any conditioning and I still thought he made some great unrewarded runs. Was getting used to a new team and system so pretty harsh on him I'd have thought.

I'm not saying that is his celing or anything those are all fair enough mitigating factors. But they are all factors buddy isn't contending with so that on any given game day buddy is more able to contribute to a winning side than Buller. I really like what I've seen from him so far and I'm glad we've already signed him for another year or so. It's no black mark that he can't walk into the club and be able to provide more on feild than an all time great with 10 years at the club. Buddy is in his twilight but he's still pretty good at footy.

Buddy gets most of the delivery. Buller the opposite end of the spectrum. So not a like for like comparison.

Buddy more experienced, but at his age has a lot of deficiencies. Buller has a lot to learn, and unlikely to have the same impact Buddy could.

Either way Buller needs to prove he's worthy of a spot, and he has 2024 to work his way into the best 22.

In his two VFL games, not yet knowing most of his teammates or coaches, having barely unpacked his bags, Buller has shown quite a bit. Enough to make us hopeful that he will genuinely contest for a spot when settled in.

Adam Cooney made an interesting point on TV last night:

If Buddy does indeed have a sore knee, he can’t have trained much over the last month (apart from swimming and strength work) - so cannot possibly have match fitness.

Cooney said in the final year of his career, he only did a full session once a week, but maintained match fitness by actually playing each week.

It’s a fair point - how can Buddy possibly be fit to play a full game?

Do we consider using him as the sub?

I don't think he has as much knee soreness as suggested.

Because I'm a dork with this sort of stuff, a few milestones now in his sights:

468 goals at the Swans (1 to go) - to pass Hall to be third most goals by a Sydney Swan
500 goals at the Swans (33 to go) - would be first player ever to kick 500+ at two V/AFL clubs

522 goals at the Swans (55 to go) - would pass O'Loughlin to be second most goals by a Sydney Swan
350 games total (10 to go)
183 games for the Swans (25 to go, so this one most unlikely) significance being this would take him past games played for the Hawks
1058 goals (11 to go) - to pass Doug Wade into 4th all time
1100 goals (53 to go)
79 Finals goals (5 to go) - to go second all time for goals in Finals

The ones in bold most achievable IMO but all not out of the question.

Has:
  • Passed Hall
  • Hit 350 games
  • Passed Wade

Might:
- Kick 500 (19 to go) for the Swans

Won't:
  • Pass O'Loughlin
  • Hit 183 games
  • Hit 1100
  • Kick 79 finals goals

His fourth quarter efforts against both North and the Bulldogs this year well and truly dragged us over the line.

It's great to see even when almost of all of the petrol in his tank is spent that he's still willing to do whatever it takes to win.

A true champion of the game that the football public will miss dearly.
