Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Lance Franklin
DOB: 30 January 1987
DEBUT: 2005
DRAFT: #5, 2004 National Draft

Is that some complicated formula behind it? can someone simplify it how they came up with that graph.
Goals were easy to kick when Lockett played and harder now

So if kicking goals were the same difficulty throughout time, Franklin is 2-3 off being the greatest goal kicker of all time

According to the formula behind it

Old mate has written a pretty great blog about it.
The long and the short is that he adjusted it for 3 different factors

1 - average goals per game of the era
2 - proportion of the goals scored by th leading goal scorer in any given match
3 - average goals per game of the leading goal scorer of a season.

And anyway it comes out that Buddy has been better at the swans than at the Hawks and also that he's the best of all time. Which, for me, means that I got to support for and cheer the greatest to ever do it at the greatest he ever did it. Grand final or not I'm forever grateful to the swans for giving me that.

One of Buddy's best in a while tonight. Bloody good for an old bloke.

His last two have easily been his best of the season, working into some good form. Maybe 500 isn't out of reach.

Yes he did last year, when he said one more year.

He will then do a press conference come the last home game before Melbourne and say goodbye after we finish our season, which may include a final or two.

That's not quite what that meant.

If someone signs on for one more year, you can still further sign on for more years.

For average goals per game in 2023

1. Papley - 1.78 goals per game
2. McDonald - 1.71 goals per game
3. Franklin - 1.58 goals per game
4. Heeney - 1.24 goals per game
5. Amartey - 1.20 goals per game
6. Hayward - 1.06 goals per game

So compared to our other players Buddy is still hitting the scoreboard.

He's doing very well, but this is a great indicator that he's not our 'best forward' as some have said. He's still very serviceable though. He's another 2-3 games at this level away from me being swayed to let him go one more.

Is his family based in qld ? I know they bought that pablo escobar estate last year, does anyone know what sort of arrangement is going on ?

Does his family live in qld and he is still based in Sydney, or are they all in Sydney still ?

Whether he goes on or not at this stage is more of a family decision rather than a club or player decision

It won't be a family decision. This is a professional sport & the Swans are a highly professional club. Decisions are made based on what optimises list strength, not what Buddy's wife or extended family wants.

The chain of events will go something like this:

Step 1. Buddy decides if he wants another year (very unlikely in my view, but you never know).

Step 2. Club decides if they want to offer Buddy another year (again, unlikely in my view).

Buddy's last performance was good and shows he's still capable of contributing. But his output has declined this year. If the same trend continues (as is inevitable given his age), another year would be a significant risk .... unless the club was prepared to play him in the VFL. And I doubt that'd happen.

I for one don't believe he should go on next year, but given his age, standing in the game, likelihood of a flag etc I'd guess his family would be the overriding factor. Of coarse it has to be initiated by the club, if they want him to retire the discussion moot, but on buddy's end I could understand the decision isn't entirely in his hands

It's also hard to know what the 'real' Buddy has been this season. Is this a purple patch with the weight off because he's told everyone internally he's retiring (as was reported the other week) or was it simply injury and illness earlier in the year he's now over?

My money is that he and the club knows he's retiring, despite his public perception. I think he is more introverted than most realise and is trying to go out with as little fuss as possible

Going to be hard to do that when he kicks 15 in his last game.

I think Buddy is introverted when it comes to the media but I get the impression he genuinely likes being in a club environment, he likes training and being with the other players and he very much likes playing.
