Lance Franklin
Lance Franklin is a giant of the game. The star Sydney Swans forward has played 300 AFL games, won two premierships with Hawthorn, is the seventh-greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, is one of just five men with eight All Australian blazers and is the most recent player to have kicked 100 goals in a season. The Western Australian is also one of just two players in the game’s history, along with former Swan and Saint Tony Lockett, to have booted 300 goals for two clubs. Franklin was added to a leadership group for the first time in his career ahead of season 2020, joining co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Callum Mills. But the 33-year-old, who was named captain of the 2018 All Australian team, has long been considered an exceptional unofficial leader, so great is his impact on Will Hayward, Nick Blakey, Ben Ronke and the rest of Sydney’s young forwards.

Lance Franklin
DOB: 30 January 1987
DEBUT: 2005
DRAFT: #5, 2004 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Dowerin (WA)/Perth (WAFL)/Hawthorn

Truely one of the greatest I've ever had the privilege to watch. I think I, probably like many others, went through most of career taking him for granted. Wasn't really until he kicked his 1000th that night that I really grasped an appreciation for what he has achieved in this game and to sit back and watch his highlights package, and it's quite a lengthy one, I realised just how much he has done for this game and the fans over such a long and successful career. And god knows he's torn us a new one on more than one occasion.

So thanks Bud for entertaining us by playing this game we all love in the manner and spirit that you have for so many years. Enjoy retirement mate, you've earned it. 🍻

So the calf is stuffed?
Longmire just said in the presser it was a 6-8 week type injury, and added that when Franklin did something similar in the same spot he missed 10 weeks, so Buddy felt he may as well announce retirement now.

Thanks for letting us be on your crazy ride

Kinda telling that he chose that photo. I know we like to think of him as only ours but it says a lot about Buddy that his former coach still means so much to him. Even though he left the Hawks he left everything out there for that club when he was with them, just as he did for us.

What a journey - so glad I got to see this legend play for so long - so Disappointed for him that it ended this way. ❤️ and that he got his 1000th goal at the SCG - he brought the club the recognition it needed in Sydney and doubled our membership just by coming to us - thank you BUDWAH legend always!!!

Memories come flooding back - the 2017 season was a topsy turvy one but Buddys goal on the run on the wing away from home when the Crows were firing on all cylinders was a sight to behold.

In his prime I always expected him to slot it from 60m and the Swans fans were always shouting, "Kick it!"

1000th , Plugger got 1300. What a champ

Love him or hate him... You were entertained by him.

It seems there are quite a few (mainly on the periphery of this board) calling out his lack of premierships here at Sydney... That's not through his lack of ability, dedication or drive.

Just based on memberships, bums in seats, highlights, memories, the things the others at the club have to say about him... He has left the club in a better state than when he got here IMO.

I don't particularly care if he's remembered as a Hawk or Swan... I'll remember his 10 v. Carlton with a fondness not many other players I've watched can garner.

A great of the game.

Thanks so much Bud.

Enjoy your family & life after footy mate!

Looking back I was lucky to witness live at the ground his hurdle goal in 2013 against Collingwood, his 10 goal haul at the SCG against Carlton in 2017 and his goal from edge of the centre square 80 metres out against the Hawks in 2016 at the MCG.

All testament to his talent, skill and ability to read the play faster than anyone else.

The media probably drove him out of Victoria otherwise he stays a Hawk for life . Shame we don't have a reunion for him to go too

I think the port game he won basically on his own in 2014 was a stand out .

Did it for GWS too.

But game one, and we lost his first swans game but he kicked a long goal maybe 60 out on the run and it was like wow he is on our side now, not scaring us as an opponent

I randomly was at the crows game it was electric

It's quite sad really :(

Just watching the swans video, and I guess he hasn't been as good the last year or two, (still a good player of course) But you almost forget how ducking amazing his best was.

We always had a shot if he was in the team

Well, there will never be another one.

We will talk about Buddy and his deeds for many years to come.

Finishes in the very top echelons of the game....could be a instant legend if the rules allowed.

A truly great career and a dreadful way to end. But the time has been coming for a while. Personally, I wish he had gone at the end of last season so he could have had a great send off. Not the GF of course. Lol.

I have no doubt this week's match will be devoted to him and the week after will be a celebration of his career at home. We owe him a lot. All except a premiership. I think 2016 was the one that got away. I wonder what would have happened if we had played 22 fit players that day?

Wouldn't have needed them If Buddy had not done his ankle in the first 5 minutes. They would not have controlled him.

I have been lucky enough to watch and savour two out and out Bloods’ champions to have worn the 23. The remarkable Ron Clegg would have sat in the stands, nodded his head and bellowed cheers for Buddwa.

For me the number 23, like number 14 now enjoys talismanic significance.
