Really really needs to work on the kicking action. Does not look confident or assured with it at all.

All for his athletic traits being in the team, and the match strength coming to hold the marks.
He's not a good set shot though
He is not Joe Daniher bad . His kicking action is okay . He has to convert the close misses.
Generally he has been an above average set shot .

Stats say otherwise

Been ok, but of late it's deserting him

Not sure if anyone is daniher bad outside mckay.

He's just too slight to be a KPF at the moment. Fingers-crossed he can physically get to the point that is needed.

The endeavour and workrate is definitely there though. I also imagine that he's probably pretty hard on himself and gets in his own head a bit.

As others have said, it's unfortunate that 2MP is hurt - Weids and Phillips can't be the appropriate Batman to Harry's Robin.

I would love him to watch some footage of Nick Riewoldt and how he was able to bring himself into the game by pushing further up the ground. To his credit, Harry did do this a few times last night.

On todays VFL performance I doubt he would have gained any form playing there. Delivery inside 50 was a bit plain.

Does anyone look at Jones and think "yeah, this is a guy who's gonna kick 6 goals and tear a game apart one day"? He just doesn't seem to have that presence about him. Never has.
No, but you don't have to be that type of player to have a significant impact.

People have short memories - in 2021 he looked as promising as any key forward prospect in his age bracket. Injuries ruined 2022 and he had more injuries again in pre-season just completed.

Whilst he may or may not need some time in the VFL (I’m not there yet), doubting his talent is silly - he showed us what he could do for an extended period in 2021. To an extent, his talent is proven. No reason to think he can’t do again what he did that year.

The current forward set up does him no favours….if he has Wright and a second ruck playing forward he gets the third defender and it’s a different story.

This stuff matters with young forwards - if memory serves, Joe D started to really show what he could do when Hooker went forward for the first time and started drawing attention.

Weideman drew zero attention on Saturday as he was uncompetitive - it’s he who should be in the gun and replaced with Phillips (who gives unconditional effort).

I know it is "if" but if he starts taking even 3 more marks from all the contests he gets to he will be pushing past 7 marks a game average this year.

I feel like he needs to go back to the vfl and play a block of games to gain some confidence. He probably kept his spot with injuries to wright and Weiderman. His best attribute is his running capacity but if he doesn’t kick goals then it makes it tough. Can we restructure the fwd line setup to bring Langford forward again as I believe it’s his best position.

Not many KPF have that presence. Even Wright does not really have that presence even though he has done it a few times. Problem is Harry is your workhorse lead up forward. He is not going to be your number 1 guy. He is the bloke who can kick his 2 or 3 goals and make a lot of leads and allow the other forwards time to shine. Do you think he would be looking better if Wright was in the side and he was not drawing good defenders ?
The other thing is he is not Buddy or a player at that level. We seem to be trying to hold a number 2 forward to the standards of an A grade number 1 forward. His performance at the same age as nearly all of the second tall forwards is better than a lot of them. Biggest issue is we do not have a number 1 forward right now.

He’s played 20 odd games a key forward and had multiple injuries that have limited the amount of consistent training he’s been able to do. Key forwards take time, usually 60-80 games before they really start being a forward you can trust. And Harry isn’t going to be a dominate forward kicking bags, he’ll be the work horse who pushes up and down the ground, kicks a couple and has 8-10 marks a game.

One a bit out of the box but maybe Jones with the skill set he has ends up being a decent defender. He is not slow. He does read the play well and has a good tank. Wresting monster would not be his go but he could certainly go with the mobile guys.

Look at Ugle-Hagan and Thilthorpe on the weekend. Both still young and inconsistent key forwards, but already showing signs that they can be match-winners. I haven't got that impression yet from Jones. Even as a mobile forward pushing up the ground you have an opportunity to stamp your authority on a game, and Jones isn't really having that impact just yet. 1 goal in 3 games against fairly ordinary opposition.

No one is doubting his talent but at some point you've gotta start putting it all together.

Fairly ordinary opposition? He played on Collins last week who is a gun defender and the Saints have a good backline mix aswell with Wilkie,
Howard and battle

If you give Jones a prolonged stint in the side he’ll eventually have a break out game. They persisted with him in 2021 and finally hit some good form, played his best game, got the rising star.

Yes Jones clearly had a role to play on Collins, but needed to have more impact than he did against St.Kilda, which is probably why he was subbed out. You can praise him for all the running he does but at some point as a key forward you need to hit the scoreboard and threaten the opposition, and he's not doing that at the moment. I would love to see him have a breakout game.
