Dane Rampe

Player Profile

Dane Rampe was denied at several drafts and didn’t land a spot on an AFL list until the age of 22. But ever since being rookie-listed in November 2012, the key defender has seized his opportunity. Rampe made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2013 and played his 150th match in 2019. He’s an All Australian, an emergency for the greatest NSW team of all time and a Bob Skilton medallist, and he’s led the Swans as a co-captain with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker since 2019. It doesn’t matter if the opposition’s best forward is a tall or small; so versatile and reliable is Rampe that he’s always assigned to the toughest task in defence. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 37; 2013 AFL draft rookie elevation (Sydney) selection No. 90.

Dane Rampe

DOB: 02 June 1990
DEBUT: 2013
DRAFT: 2013
RECRUITED FROM: Eastern Suburbs (NSW)/University of NSW (NSW)

Rampe 250 😍😍😍

Some people may disagree but I think that he's been one of the better captains we've ever had. Seems to put team success before himself and always comes across as very articulate and sincere.

premiership captain in 2 wks
This might be a bit mean spirited of me, but I'm kinda hoping Mills doesn't come back this year.
If we do happen to win the flag, seeing Rampes holding the cup aloft would be the icing on the most wonderful cake ever, he deserves to be a Premiership captain.

IF Mills was fit and played it would be fitting if he was like Voss calling Lynch up and got Rampe up with him.

But then again if we win who cares 😂

Dane Rampe will become just the 13th player to play 250 games for the Swans on Friday night An incredible career, and one that's not done yet! #Bloods

He’s at least the equal of any defender I’ve seen play for the club. Personally I’d say he’s the best of the lot since the start of the century. I’m a huge Craig Bolton fan and I’d still take Rampe over him.

Bolton was a beauty, Richards was a spud at essendon and a gun for us, but I reckon the best I've seen was Andrew Dunkley, played on the best forwards ie locket, ablett, Dunstall etc the best mark I've seen at the Swans and the worst kicking action I've seen also

Ramps has made a career out of being an undersized tall defender who has beaten his opponents by his strength, speed, determination and overall footy smarts.

Seeing the goals he's kicked lately and the ones in the highlights package does make me wonder how he would've gone as a wing / HF. I think he would've killed it in that position too.

It would feel very odd for Mills to lift the cup this year. As others have noted, he can lift it next year after Rampe :)

Mills hasn't led the team in 2024, it would be more fitting for Rampe to hold the cup.

Was a terrible decision making Mills sole captain this year given his injury. I think most of this board said as much when it was announced.

But in hindsight, they probably did it because they anticipated Parker would not be playing seniors consistently and didn't want to deal with the media scrutiny that would have come with your captain playing as sub or in the reserves. And they couldn't just bump Parker off and keep Rampe as that would have led to similar media scrutiny (at least initially) and may have been more harmful to Parker's pride. Who knows, just thinking through the counter argument.

I reckon at the start of the year they also weren’t confident if Rampe would be getting regular games. He has been a champion though and is one of the most important players for our success.

Agree with everyone that it would be great for Dane to lift the cup.
Still doesn't sit right with me that Hall held the cup aloft, in Maxfield's absence, rather than Kirky.

Just to put a potential downer on things.
I've referred a couple of times to an article back in June when Clarkson publicly spoke of chasing some veterans;

'Clarkson said he is also interested in chatting with Port Adelaide's Ollie Wines, Sydney duo Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, and Greater Western Sydney veteran Callan Ward.'

Lots of subsequent talk about Luke, but nothing on Dane.
TBH if I was North I'd be chasing an organiser ,such as Dane over Luke, who would be battling for a spot in an area where NM are reasonably well covered.

Maybe the subsequent silence means Dane has knocked back any approach, but Luke's wife has a well established interior design business and they also have a property company.
Those commitments would I'd imagine be a major consideration as to whether Luke was to decamp, particularly as he already has a Swans contract for 2025.

Not sure what relationship/business ventures Dane has in Sydney and of course also contracted for 2025.

Would North tagging on a coaching 'extension' (as per Malceski) be appealing to Dane?

FWIW I hope both are at the Swans in 2025.
