Reading through this thread, it’s the same haters bagging the kid infinitum. A few of them should just not post on this thread as it’s apparent what their thoughts are on him and those views won’t change regardless of what the kid does.

I’m neither a lover nor a hater of RCD and don’t post on the thread normally, given the vitriol being posted about one of OUR players. Give it a rest you blokes, the List Manager and the coaches will make a decision on him at years end, the continual bagging of him is not necessary.
He was a slow burn when he was drafted if I recall correctly, and I’d agree, his progress is taking longer than I’d hoped but he might still get there, but that’s for the coaches to judge. He’s still only 22 years old and clearly wasn’t born with the natural midfield ability of a Sonsie.

Hope he can take the next step whenever it may be.
I'd like to keep him around.
The VFL team has been decimated this year - MRJ, Cumbo, Sonsie, HRS, Ross, Juddy, Miller all getting call ups to the seniors. Also Parker and Caddy retiring has left the squad light on. Lets also not forget that the 2s have had to persevere with the likes of aarts and george simultaneously at times too.

Keeping RCD at the club provides the 2s with a bit of experience.
at the very least.

I reckon Lambo and Edwards retirements save him, would have been in the gun otherwise

How many first round-picked mids from 2018 are yet to infuence at senior level, but still listed come 2023?

Rare as hen's teeth I reckon, RCD can consider himself lucky and hopefully a massive preseason will finally allow him to take the next step.

Has shown resilience I reckon, has spent now the first quarter of his career in the ressies which would be hard for him expectation-wise, since he wasn't a 2 metre tall+ skinny giraffe when drafted, which are normally the ones expected to take this much time to come on.

My gut feel says that to free up list spots he’ll be shopped, and if no takers delisted and rookied.

I’m not sure if Pickett is on the primary list, but if not:

MAIN LIST
Lambert - retired
Caddy - retired
Edwards - retired
Martyn - delisted + rookied
RCD - delisted + rookied

ROOKIE LIST
Pickett - elevated
Stack - elevated
Aarts - delisted
Parker - delisted

I’m not banking on delisting or being able to move a contracted Castagna.

Yep, looking at current listed players, that’s a big possibility. But who knows what happens during trade period, someone else may get poached or traded that we aren’t expecting.

Easily worth another year. Was always a long term investment for us, and as our older mids start retiring, people want to get rid of him...

This is the time I imagine we were planning on him becoming a regular.

Would it be nice if he had developed quicker, of course, but who would have he been kicking out of our mids if he was performing better?

I really want Riley to take the next steps with us, but don't get excited over his performance on the weekend. Unfortunately The bullants aren't even VFL standard with just the one win. Take a look below at his season stats, I highlighted the games against top 8 sides:

So averaging about 20 possies and 4 tackles a game for the year. This kid can make it

Not a chance On earth Martyn is rookied.
He’s the first delisted, followed by Aarts.

Pretty damning isn't it. Cant be throwing him into the seniors when he routinely puts up that tripe against the better VFL sides.

Why would we play him Full back? I'm guessing thats what FB means? Whats BPR? Would be hard to generate 20+ possessions when your playing Full back I would have thought.

Martyn retained/rookied is very optimistic.

Martyn retained/rookied is very optimistic.

May be 100% right. I honestly don’t know, and whilst I don’t mind Martyn, can’t see him being anywhere close to the 22 in the near future.

Reason I think Martyn will be re-rookied:

  • delayed pre-season due to glandular fever
  • change of position to the backline
  • can’t see us taking four rookies in the rookie draft (on the assumption I’m right in terms of what the list decisions will be).

I think he has been found out a bit for pace, like a lot of good footballers you won't get anywhere at AFL level without pace. An entire season at half back sort of says he is no longer considered a mid.

With Riley I'm not sure what else he can do to improve. I think this is as good as he can be. He has improved his size and endurance. He has tried to work on his running pattern so he can increase his possession count. He has tried to improve his marking and goal kicking to become multi-dimensional....

...but nothing has really worked.

I think he's improved as a player. He is a better inside ball winner than he was. The problem with RCD is that he hasn't learned to be anything else. As a midfield in our side, you need to be able to be an inside and outside player. Offensive and defensive. A ground ball winner and marking option.

I hope he can improve and broaden his skill base but with players like Sonsie already skipping past him, I think he might struggle.
