Always been a fan of Weid and thought he’d go another level after last season, still hope he can.

I’m not really a fan of player ratings but this from the first crack last night suggesting throughout Weid’s career he’s never once been above the average for key forward at his age and currently this year well below.

If you take out his finals series he's been relatively crap. But I also think people need to get rid of the notion that your FF has to be a star. They are just another role player these days.

idc if he clunks every mark and kicks bags. i'm honeslty my happiest when i see fly for the ball and make a contest, at least bring it to ground. Games he's good in, he does that well

Yeh first half of last year he was solid and looked like he was building, trailed off in the second half of last year, got injured before this season started and has struggled in the firsts this year.

To be fair a lot of guys struggle if they have interrupted pre seasons, but geez he's 24 and it suddenly seems that time will be against him if he doesn't improve significantly as this season goes on.
Definitely needs to take a step particularly in regards to hanging on to a few of the ones that’s he is getting his hands too, he has coped the oppositions best defender more than once which does free Tmac up to deal with at times the 3rd best defender as per Friday night, I’d give him this week and hope he can make hay against an ordinary Collingwood team.

Thought he was looking ok last year as well.

Agree FF is just a role. Cam Mooney was certainly no star but played the FF role perfectly over Geelong’s 2007-2010 period. Weid can be to us what Mooney was to Geelong.

He's a ******* weird one, he hits the ball in the air about as brave as anyone these days he just doesnt get reward with easy goals. I think I'm happy enough with what he's doing tbh
I reckon it’s close to okay? He sorts out his head, a few that he marks then sail through and we’re not even having this conversation. He gets another week at any rate I reckon

You're right, at worst he always provides a contest and moves pretty well for a tall. But and it's a but that's growing ever faster, if he can start to clunk just a few of the contests he gets to, then he's got Naughton type runway.

I agree, everything is a one on one or a pack mark. Doesn’t get hit on a lead from FF very often. Not sure if that’s his running patterns or the space isn’t there. I think the former as BB was able to get on the end of a couple. He’s having nearly moments so I’m hoping it all clicks for him one game.

He's a big tease. Has so many not far off games. Kind of had another one last week. I think he competes well. He just struggles to clunk a lot. It's possibly separation on his opponent he needs to work on most. Fritta does it really well, as does TMac. Weid always seems to have an opponent on his a$$. But he works hard and competes, that's all we need atm tbh and i think he just offers more than BB.

I don't think anyone is expecting to be a breakout star.
He has the tools and he seems to be so close to having a great game or run of games.
How long do you give him to "click" though? 2 games, 4 games, the rest of the H & A season or until we start dropping games?
There has to be a time when we try either of the Browns or a non tall forward option to get more forward production.

His better years are the ones he’s played more games in. Hopefully the more he plays this year the more he improves as he settles in.

He’s a tall you pick to work the rest of your forward structure around. I’ve been saying it for years. The coaches don’t pick him because they’re expecting him to take all of those impossible marks, and fans getting so aggrieved about the drops is weird when the coaches pick him to play a role knowing that he’s not going to necessarily take the grabs but the side is better off anyway because you need a forward who’s going to lead long and drag a defender around the field and contest in the air and just perform basic structural functions and we certainly don’t have anyone else to do it. Clearly we all have expectations for what KPFs should be and Weid is well of the pace of the stars but this is the trajectory the coaches have laid out for him to get there - just play your role and you’ll stay in the side, you don’t have to try and do anything differently. This is the first year that he’s played in a side with decent forward delivery also. Probably won’t ever be a star but this is an acceptable way for him to build confidence and experience towards becoming a more balanced individual performer because it’s still helping the team. Fans are just so blinded by rage that they think dropping marks = failure but it’s a bit more complicated than that. If he gets dropped it’ll be because he’s not doing what the coaches ask and that’ll be fair enough. If he’s still averaging under a goal a game in two years it’s probably game over but until he’s had a continuous run in the side his development isn’t going to go anywhere. Will eventually start finding easier leads etc. Thought he had a couple of decent groundball wins which he handed off to players for scores, as well as some good front and centres from his contests. There’s enough there to work with to keep him in. He’s okay enough at what he does, if not great. I think another serious injury will cook him though, can’t start again. Just keep him in as long as we can while others are still taking marks and kicking goals.

At any rate I reckon between R6 and 14 he would have been in the top 10 or so key forwards for goals kicked and contested marks. When he’s in form he’s pretty good, when he’s not he’s crap but still playing a role. This post has been too long and I’ve repeated myself like 12 times. He’s frustrating and pretty bad I just want people to stop complaining about the dropped marks, it just doesn’t matter.

It's not just the marks, I genuinely thought he was subbed out at one point during the first half. It's like he's leading to all the wrong spots or something. And his goal kicking, fmd, it's like shooting fish in a barrel for him in the VFL, as soon as he gets into the AFL side though he drops like 25% in accuracy.

I think he was stuck on the bench for 10 minutes late first early 2nd too? Also the last quarter for a fair chunk.

So strange from Weids perspective, almost as if hes scared of the responsibility and expectation that would come with signing with a new club who needs a KPF.
I think there's an element of this, but I'm also not unhappy because I think with time he'll become more reliable and will start to take over Ben Brown's role as he winds down.
