McKinely and Warren are both rubbish at AFL level. Azza was the only one of the 3 who has shown the ability to perform (sometimes) at a high level in AFL in the last 2 years. Seems the backup plan if one of the triple towers goes down is to play Black/Daw/Curren. Hope Steve is as good next year as he was this year!!

Sensing how all the recent teams topped up before achieving success, it worries me that we are doing the opposite at a time where it isnt fashionable to have a youthful list.
Melbourne cleaned its list out and suffered for it.
They are now adding senior players to their group through Dawes, Rodan, Clark and funnily enough how Sydney (McGlynn, Kennedy etc, Collingwood (Jolly, Ball) and Hawthorn (Hale, Gibson) have done in recent years.
I cant think of any other team in or near the 8 who is pushing youth as the key.
Essendon gained goddard, Richmond has gained Chaplain, Knights and Azza, Geelong got Rivers and HMac- all mimicking the work of top 3 this year.

It seems we are trying to copy Adelaide (Thompson, Rutten etc), West Coast (Cox, Kerr, Glass) and Freo (Pav, Sandi, McPharlin) with having a small senior group like our boomer, Petrie and Wells and building 20 something year olds around them to be a top team.
Freo in 2010 and 2012, WC in 2011 and 2012 and Adelaide this year didnt win the flag nor even reach the granny.

It seems we are following our own model and backing ourselves in to get right results. If we have an annus horribilius to the likes of Essendon and Carlton in 2012, how does that bode for Bon?
I hope another preseason, year of maturity and finals success would mean our best 25 can hold their own against any team but our best 25 were the only ones that played footy in 2012 due to our good run with injury.
4 or 5 go down and theres no 50 plus gamers ready to step in who have been there done that.
Itll be April 2010 all over again.

If we are smart we will be timing our run for when Ziebell, Cunnington, Bastinac, Atley (our midfield) etc are at their peak.

Anything before that is a bonus, and if we continue to draft young talent, then the window created by that core ( including Swallow) will be extended and allow some leeway for all the sh_t that can go wrong in any particular season.

It's been said before, but none of these teams topped up when they scraped into the 8 for the first time in years . To use your own examples:
Collingwood - Jolly and Ball came in 2010 after 4 consecutive years playing finals where they suffered losses in EF, PF, SF, PF. So that's about 8 finals in 4 years before they topped up with Jolly and Ball.
Hawthorn - Hale and Gibson are not premiership players. They were both recruited after Hawks won the 08 flag.
Sydney - McGlynn and Kennedy both came to the club in 2010. While it is true that Sydney missed the finals in 2009, they played in every finals series from 2003-2008 and were well placed to assess the gaps in their list in terms of finals. And it's no myth that they recycle players better than anyone else.

And Melbourne cleaned out its senior players in a suicidal fashion. We are clearing older depth players, others we have lost through natural attrition.

What's your preference?

Strangely, mine is McKinley. I think Warren has wasted his chances. And I'm pretty sure he was on a last chance to shine this year.
Sorry Filth, but Im telling ya, Benny Mc is gone.

One moment of that game. He dominated you, all game, not just that one moment. But yes, Cunnington is fast becoming one of my favourite non Richmond players to watch. I look forward to having a competitive rivalry with North for years to come.
Thanks Grockadoc. I definitely think you guys are on the right track. Azza is my favourite player and he will be a great fit for you. Tigers v Roos over the last couple of years have all been pearlers and I agree this will continue.

If it was giving a young guy that didn't look like he knew which way we were kicking then I'd rather give Edwards games over a dead-end player. But, Black has the potential to be very special. He needs to earn the games but when the opportunity arises, he needs to have the opportunity.

If we were losing our talented kids and holding onto the stodge then our supporters would be livid.

Very well put, actually would make a fantastic thread title. Far to often brilliants points are raised and quickly drown in the cesspool of garage that can be BF this time of year.

Yep. Filth and Teffy are the only 2 people in the world who rate McKinley. I don't even reckon McKinley rates McKinley all that highly.
You know I quite admire Ben McK. I think he's probably aware of his limitations, yet he clearly gets the best out of himself and contributes really well at the Bees. And isn't he doing some tertiary study at the same time? Good on him, he's had a crack and he's fallen short of AFL level. No shame in that. He's still having a red hot go in the VFL (from all accounts) and he's setting himself up for a life as something other than an AFL footballer.

Obviously his time is up on the senior list, but the bloke doesn't deserve to cop any shit for having had a go.

Well said.

And 89 goals in 48 games is hardly the record of a complete spud.

He could have walked to richmond in the delisted free agency period if he had of really wanted to get Richmond for nothing....

His still a contracted player until 31st October. So he isnt a delisted free agent till then or he can opt for the draft and take his chances there...

Fair points. Maybe I'm a firm believe in that you trade like for like or don't trade at all. That's where I'm getting at. We are trading depth for potential. We arent topping up. It seems the club thinks we are fair way off top 4. I'm worried form and or injuries will crucify us before we get there.

McKinley came to North and has given it a metric ****load more of a bash than many other recruits we've had over the years.

I have it on good authority also that McKinley's arrival was also the spur for what was Edwards' best year last year.

He'll never play AFL again, but I don't see why people have to hop into him continually.

Not that we should ever, for a second, compare ourselves to The Slop down at Western Oval, but McKinley would have played 20+ games for them if he'd gone there instead.

Geez I laugh at people on here....
H clearly not in best 22 but people want to keep him as back up.
Edwards miles behind others but people want to keep him as back up.
Pederson miles behind but people want to keep him as back up.

You guys remind me of when you dumped an old girlfriend and couldn't give a shit until
your mates swarmed and hooked up with her and then you wanted to do everything possible to get her back.

Time to leave her on the heap and go look for a hotter chick guys...There was a good reason you dumped her in the 1st place !!!!

lol, funniest thing Ive heard all day
