Disagree heavily with those statements.

however I along with many others are very shocked with the decision and have reason to be.... considering Robertson has been rated by many including almost every phantom as a top 10/12 pick. He also won the Larke Medal and his results are far more consistent.

I would have preferred a potential A Grade star with a first rounder. I know it doesn't happen every year, but it's certainly what you would hope for.

Hoping I am proved wrong. Will be interesting to see what we do with our 3 picks in the early 40's.

I would love a potential A Grade star with our first pick and I think that our recruitment team rated him a clear A with every metric we measure. Fact us, I was hoping Robertson got called out, because he looked the goods, but he clearly wasn't what we wanted, which is the come back to bite comments feel wrong to me.

I did however, used to care so much about the draft, it was my favourite time of year, but as we have gotten better I just trust whoever we bring into the club.

Back them in and forget about the phantom drafts.

21. RICHMOND
Thomson Dow (midfielder)
Bendigo Pioneers/Swan Hill, 182cm, 72kg

Rounding out the first round, the Tigers plucked midfielder Dow, whose power around the contest and smarts are a highlight of his game. The younger brother of Carlton's Paddy Dow, Thomson has been told by the Tigers to target a round-one debut against his brother next year although it's difficult to see him cracking into Richmond's star-studded team immediately.

fair few blokes would say...ya gotta get pass me first !!!

Sorry. Dee's main issue is the outside mids. They can get the ball inside, but can't move it. BEllis would have been huge for them. That they didn't go hard for him is weird to me. Run and carry is something they haven't got much of.
I could not understand why they didn’t chase him.

Yes Brando got a lot of shit from Richmond supporters but he’s a damn good wingman.

Ah well Melbourne’s loss is Gold Coasts gain.

He shares the same birthday as his brother Paddy
184cm and 76kg isn’t bad for someone who just turned 18. Should get to 84kg in no time

These were the height and weight of paddy Dow prior to being drafted and he is now 187cm 84kgs and was also a have the same birthdates
PADDY DOW
POS:
Midfielder
Ht 184cm Wt 78kg DOB 16/10/1999
From Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country

Thomson Dow
Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country | Midfielder/Forward
16/10/2001 | 184cm | 76k

This is unfair on the kid, and I back our recruiters in 100%, but I can’t help but feel underwhelmed and a little let down considering what was left on the board. All will be forgiven if we can somehow trade into the 20’s tonight and pick up a Rantall,Rivers, Worrell, Jones, Robertson etc
I haven’t seen those kids highlights but I have to ask, would they fit the way we play? Because looking at Thomson’s highlights he fits perfectly into the way we play.

From the limited vision, looks like his hands are elite. It’s a pity we only get a 1 minute clip these days, used to be a good 3-4 minutes

I think we just get so caught up in the phantoms and what the media are saying. I wonder if the recruiters look at the phantoms and have a laugh “gee they’re over-rating him” or “the kid is a gun, yet they’ve got him ranked 50”

Yes we are in a real good position, and have won the premiership again (believe me I am still on a high) but that doesn't mean we can just pick whoever..
I'm not doubting they haven't done their research, however I along with many others are very shocked with the decision and have reason to be.... considering Robertson has been rated by many including almost every phantom as a top 10/12 pick. Feel a bit similar, it's less about Dow, but rather what other options that still existed at the same pick. It's interesting when one puts the slightest difference of view or opinion to the main, a bit like swimming against a tide! I'm optimistic, Clarke and co are selecting well most of the time, but it's not a perfect science. They are, however, the experts, and it would seem a bit of a left of centre choice and whenever that is the path, there is the scope for a bite on the arse.

We don't yet know, but it could be a 'Robertson was there yet we took Dow' moment, or "Gould slid yet took Dow' moment. The future only knows at this point.

He just had a sad face on the broadcast. Shedda was laughing his ass off, that's a Richmond man

I tend not to judge on that, for all we know he had a challenge in his life we donlt know about but at least he was there. Maybe he has been all but promised at a particular Club and they went another way at the last minute and he's waiting to know why. He's a kid, hell, he's even allowed to cry in my book and you forgive it.

Same. I’ll admit I was shocked we picked Thompson at the time but I very much don’t care now. Cleary our system for rating players is an outlier to other clubs, no point arguing in who has more talent when ranked against each other without knowing the metrics it’s assessed on.

Now that I don’t really care, you can see the folly of getting wound up over a few places in the draft order outside the top 10. The old club mantra about all players being equal once they set foot in the door should ring true for RFC fans.

Lambert, Castagna, Pickett, Stack, Grimes, or Conca, Ellis, Lemon, Post, Elton, Griffiths.

The important thing is to keep getting the kids through, and not waste too many list spots on so called depth players. We’ve done that very well for a while now.

Great post mate!

No show confidence in the kids that you already have that are ready to go for kids who might take longer to make it but have higher ceilings.
Looks like the strategy...digging for diamonds in the rough! 👍;)👍 And besides we still have draft picks that haven't had a run yet in the firsts!
We just fine tune our draft picks a tad longer, no pressure! How good is that then...

Ellis is completely shit. imho

Do you have a app on your phone that alerts you every time his name is mentioned with something positive attached.

2 x Premiership player, Richmond Life Member and was the first in line in the HHH sessions. Brando is Richmond Royalty, if you like him or not.

And so are your constant harping posts in regards to BE...we get it!...show a little class!
Save it all for game day when we play GCS....

Think both these post really highlight a discussion I was having with a Hawks supporting friend whom I watched the Draft with.

Firstly, the team that is selecting the player has a massive influence on the type of player selected. There is more leeway with a team like Richmond than say Gold Coast as they can afford to take a player that has a longer scope for development. They are more in as position to take a higher upside guy with a longer development timeframe than a ready to go but lower upside player. I see Gould and Robertson as more ready to go but far lower upside.

Secondly, it seems as if teams are starting to promote upside over ready made players when it comes to the second tier guys in the draft. Jack Higgins fell. As did guys like Rhys Matheson. I think guys who do Phantom Drafts haven’t come around to that line of thinking. Case in point - Matt Balmer said he expected the picks in his mock to be the top 20 in some order. This has proved not to be the case.

I personally would have selected Worrell, but I certainly am not disappointed that Robertson or Gould weren’t selected. Lower risk but definitely lower reward.

Reading the reviews. Sounds like he has genuinely amazing agility, fantastic hands inside, good in attack, and likes the contest. Downsides, are kicking is good, then not so good, skinny and injury plagued.

So I'd guess the tigers looked at him from the development perspective and thought 'there's a lot to work with here. Good height, we can bulk him up. Agility is amazing, and we can work on his off the mark speed. Kicking can be good, so we have to work on his composure. Good forward, and we can build on that."

From the glass half full perspective they might be thinking they have another Sheds on their hands. So that'd be a great pick. You pretty much have those amazing hands or not, they don't tend to develop. You pretty much have that agility and ability to work in traffic. Given that is the core of our game style he makes sense.
Sheds replacement going off those highlights
Nothing we do, when selecting kids could come back to bite us. Richmond rated this kid very highly, the same team that has drafted exceptionally well for years.

Richmond won the premiership, have Rance, Stack, Higgins, RCD, Naish, Ross, McIntosh all pushing for selection. This kid....clearly has exceptional hands, is obviously a good user of the football, 100% is a good character - under our coaches with zero pressure to preform will likely excel.

Gone are the days where something can bite us in the ass, we are Richmond.

Welcome Thomson. Go well kid.
He just had a sad face on the broadcast. Shedda was laughing his ass off, that's a Richmond man

Maybe Sheds being there was no coincidence!! It's been mentioned a few times. If this is the case and he is considered Shed's replacement, he may avoid what was one of the biggest knocks on Sheds in the first few years. That being that Shed's team mates were not on the same wavelength as him and a lot of his passes didn't go to hand. Coming into a team where the players expect the unexpected and sometimes near impossible, young Thommo shouldn't have that problem. Lets hope this is so. :)

Welcome Aboard Thomson. All the best!! Go Tiges.
