Delisted #28: Elliott Kavanagh - Gone to play SANFL

Here's hoping Kavanagh can give himself the best possible chance at AFL level for 2014.

Whoever saw THAT game at Vic Park against the VFL Magpies will understand why I get so excited at the prospect of this kid in his prime

Needs to make a mark this year, just give something e.g 10+ senior games

Year 1 was his 'fitness year' I reckon. Get him through relatively unscathed. Check
Year 2 seemed to be his defensive/game plan year to learn AFL style with a good fitness base. Check
Year 3 I hope can be his improvement year that sees him play 10+ games
Year 4+ will be his breakout year.

I hope so too, I mean jobe took about the same time to develop. Lets hope kav's body transforms over summer to handle the rigours of senior AFL footy, potential can only get you so far.

From a few things I heard, the club was stoked to get him through year 1 virtually injury free with the added bonus of allowing him the opportunity to play AFL football.

From the few times I watched him this year, he seemed a designated negating role. Played an outstanding game against a rampant James Magner whom curtailed him one of the few times this year. Was laying plenty of tackles despite not winning much of the ball himself.

Seems like a real confidence type of player. When it's up, he can play subliminal football, but can be very shy in games hence being largely unnoticed. Once he finds that common ground, watch out I hope.

If he could even be just half the player that Jobe is, he will be an absolute superstar.

He reminds me of Josh Kennedy of the Swans with the way he moves. Obviously he needs to bulk up quite a bit to feature in our midfield but i have faith.

Might get some early games while Melksham is suspended.
That should be his spot to get IMO, but with Merrett playing round 1 last year who knows and it could likely be whoever is impressing this preseason.

Really want Kav to come on. Really like him. He is one of those players I immediately had a bit extra love for him from day one!

As some have mentioned, this will be his third season with us.

His debut season (2012) was all about getting his body right, getting a senior game into him was just a bonus. last year seemed to be about working on his defensive aspect of his game after playing mostly as a free wheeling midfielder in under age footy. This year will hopefully be the year that he takes some big steps forward and pushes guys like Howlett & Hocking as lower ranker midfielder for a final midfield spot.

Last night was pretty hard to watch.. He tried put he just seemed to be stuck in VFL pace the whole game, got caught trying to kick to the second or third read on a kick a couple times. When he did get them off the disposals were great... its just he kept getting caught waiting.

Tackling around the packs was good, but once again seemed to be landing them just as the disposal was going, at least the pressure was there.

Hopefully these are just issues that can be fixed with some AFL game time, let him get a feel for the pace.

Is it just me or is he getting groomed as a tagger?

I reckon you're right. He spent a lot of last season in the VFL tagging blokes, and the commentators remarked a couple of times that he was keeping close to Ablett. It would make sense for us to anoint a successor to Hocking at some stage and Kav seems to be it.

The main flaw in his game last night was that he got caught with the ball 3 or 4 times, which could well have been because he was standing right next to an opponent tagging them. He is pretty damaging when he gets his kick away though so I'd give him a few consecutive games for him to get the feel for the pace of the game. He still comes across as having all the attributes to be a really good footballer, he just seems a little rusty.
