Delisted #28: Elliott Kavanagh - Gone to play SANFL

Doubt we'd groom him as a tagger. In the VFL he was being given run with roles to help teach him the defensive requirements.

It may be that it is the way in which he gets his first real shot at the big time but I expect that ultimately the club sees him as more than a tagger.

But that's an apprenticeship that many great bombers have done before being unleashed as damaging midfielders.

He was in fumble city last night. Clean ball handling is his biggest issue.

Which is bizarre since he topped the clean hands test in his draft year.

too much is being made of everyone fumbling last night, having been on the gold coast recently and gone to kick a footy around at night with a couple of mates, the dew was insane and definitely not something any of our guys will be used to. I'm writing it off to be honest

Think Andrew Carrazzo/Kane Cornes type tagger who'll accumulate an unassuming 25+ touches per week and he could be a winner.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere Ashby did a good stitch up job on tagging Lachie Whitfield in their TAC year. 'Frustrating Whitfield' along those line if I remember correctly.

Jack

I only pointed out two players who were in fumble city - Think my assessment took account of the circumstances.

eh, you also mentioned how joe and jake weren't clunking marks. it just didn't look like a game for really clean ball movement, especially once the ball hit the deck

Bloody hell they were doing a pretty decent job of it at times - struggle to see any tall forwards that could have done better under the conditions.

That's the point he was making...

His timing was a little out going both ways, but that's due to a lack of exposure at senior level & being the first hit out of year I think he can be given a little latitude. He'll shed the tardiness with more game time and confidence though. Has the smarts & instincts to suggest he will, just will take a bit of time.

I think 8-12 games this year is a realistic expectation & really come of age next year in his 4th.

Kav has some real talent, if he can bring anything approaching the intensity of Cornes/Carazzo to his game we wont be playing him as tagger - he'll be an out and out ball winning midfielder.

But he's never shown anything approaching their appetite for the contest which is why a guy like Kommer (who can't clean his boots on talent) gets picked ahead of him every week.

Its far too early to make judgements, his tackling efforts around stoppages and some quick hands in close were kind of impressive, don't forget he's never played consecutive games...

I was referrring to Carlisle and Steinberg not leading enough in the forward half - I was actually complementary of Joe's leading and attack in marking contests - And that 4 out of the 5 goals kicked by JD and Carlisle were ground balls, which is unsustainable for key forwards- One thing I can say that is when Winderlich and Chapman resume they will make the forwards lead.

Red and Black Preview, #28, Elliott Kavanagh

Kavanagh delivers

Age: 20

Height: 185cms

Weight: 75kgs

Games: 4

Position: Midfield

Fantasy Relevance: Watchlist

Look Out For: Great hands, Great decision making, Strong sideburns

Essendon’s 2011 first round draft pick is very much still a work in progress.

Coming into his 3rd season, Kavanagh is still yet to truly deliver on his tremendous potential, yet he has shown enough flashes to suggest he has a great future at AFL level.

He was critical in Essendon’s comeback win over Fremantle, where he kicked one goal with a quick snap and had a hand in two others with sharp, clean gives by hand, but didn’t really have the opportunity to show us more in season 2013.

With the midfielder having major hamstring troubles as a junior, 2012 and 2013 were more about repairing Elliott’s body than expecting any real production, but 2014 and beyond are very much about Kavanagh becoming a major player in the Essendon midfield.

What to expect in 2014: Kavanagh has been given run with roles at both AFL and VFL levels in the past, and will probably perform similar roles on occasion, but look for him to step up this year and be one of the leaders of the VFL midfield.

He is in the midst of a pre-season battle royal with about 6 or 7 other young players for the remaining one or two senior spots, so it’s a real lottery as to whether he will start in round 1, but if he doesn’t, expect him to hover around the mark for much of the season.

Does Kavanagh get overrated due to his draft number? Do some people mention his huge potential based on draft number? Like others, haven't seen a lot to be impressed with early on, although admittedly I don't watch VFL.

are we going to run with the fumbling against GC in a preseason practice match, or the clean hands, vision and creative instincts against Freo in the real stuff? Or just arbitrarily pick one to justify a given position?

as a general rule, we seem to write kids off far too early. imo, kav needs to play week after week, finding how best to fit his game into the demands and pace of senior footy. Plenty told us that Myers was rubbish and had never shown anything at any level. A few said no, the kid has some strengths and will get there. Now he's more or less a lock for senior footy. Melksham similar.

Kav will be a very good player, imo.

Difficulty with Kav is that the pace of AFL does seem to cause a bit of a problem for him. It is really only experience that will help him make the required adjustment but he isn't really being set a role that gives him a long term spot which would give him the time to adapt.

It's difficult to show much in 4 games spread over 2 seasons. Though I thought that he showed quite a bit in both the Freo and Brisbane games last year.

He seems to have really good instincts around goal and is certainly prepared to do the defensive stuff. He might be able to play a long term role forward but given the apparent preferences and the way in which Kav is being developed it really seems as though he's just going to have to bide his time in the reserves. It's easy to forget that there was a time when basically everyone had to wait years to get opportunities.

Kav just needs gametime in the seniors. With no Melksham first 2 weeks I hope he gets the runs, and not as sub
