I was happy for him today as he always gets into great positions. His biggest issue for him was fluffing those opportunities. It’s not fair that his spot is more cut throat than a good key position player than can’t convert.
Not fair but the fact is there is hundreds of small forwards that get in good positions in lower leagues. The thing that sets them apart is conversion. Look at players like Betts and Milne! That’s what you got to be like to have a long career in the AFL.
The best player I seen in our colours to be able to achieve this feat was Darren “Borris” Bewick one of our most underrated players of all time. Even Sheeds said his biggest regret was retiring him. It doesn’t matter if Menzies is unorthodox as long as he hits the scoreboard regularly.

Prominent small forwards he’s averaging more goals a game than:

Close
Elliot
Gresham
Spargo
Switkowski
McReery

Multiple goals 2 weeks running just further validates the importance of the running he does, the competing in the air and the pressure he brings.

Very good little footballer.

His competing in the air is exceptional. Is somehow never out marked it seems. Always manages to bring it to ground

He is a different small forward as he is not really a crumbing or total pressure player. He is more of a small medium forward that can take a mark and finds space.

I think we persist with him.

Point of difference in the forwardline. Find a pressure daemon to pair with and we will have our smalls set. (Alwyn is not that player, he should be pushing further up the field long term)

We look at our best when he and Snelling are both in the team providing manic pressure. I think the third small in the forwardline is the vulnerability with Davey being a kid and Tippa probably not truely match fit.

He’s our best small forward after a handful of games.

I’m really not sure why there’s isn’t more excitement about what he can become.
im unsure what sort of small forward he is becoming. A crumbing one? unlikely. A marking one? more than likely. a hybrid who can do it all? unsure.

He just does everything well, but not brilliantly. Similar to Breust, Elliott

His improvement since playing for Tassie is so big. When he was an over-ager playing here, I thought he was no chance to be drafted, he would do some good things but was really wasteful of opportunities and a bad field kick. I was surprised when he got drafted from SA. IMO where he came from he has done amazing to play 10 AFL games. Hopefully he doesn't stop improving and can have a career.

I’m not sure manic is the correct description. Snelling and Menzie clearly have the biggest tanks and also are strong bodies who rarely have their tackles broken.

The game against Melbourne and first half against Collingwood was the first time I’ve seen our team defence really click at a high level for an extended period of time.

Wonder how much it’s due to the new senior coach or improvement from the playing list.

At the moment he’s one that consistently impacts the scoreboard.

Feel like the hype was there last year on this forum when he hadnt showed much through lack of opplrtunity and even over PS.

Now hes performing game day the hype seems to have gone? Seems strange

He does everything this guy and imo is atleast on an AFL list in 2028 be it Tasmania or someone else. Tassie would have to be eyeing him off imo

But hes a great pressure small forwardx who doesnt lose 1v1 or halfs contest he sometimes shouldnr and his goal nous is elite. He does crumb, its not his one wood and hes better off the ruck hands at i50 stoppage but it is still apart of his game

Hes a massive get considering Tippa is battling and Guelf/Snelling dont quite have that ability to hit the scoreboard like him and Davey is still young but quality.

If we stopped treating him like a key position forward by dumping it long on his head, I reckon he would be even more effective.

Davey wasn't in the team, so Menzie was probably the next best option for KPF.

Well said. Has good hands and seen him put his head where others won't. Is only 20 years old.

The Alwyn Davey senior role :thumbsu:

feels odd to have gone from zero pressure from smalls to quite a bit.
Menzie, Snelling and a fit Tippa would barely see the ball exit. Happy to keep pumping the soft games into Tippa to build that base, then get back to VFL to consolidate.

Menzie has to be a mainstay though. for a guy with so few games into him, he's got a lot of composure. seeing very similar development curve in him that durham had. really just needs those next 20 odd games into him now
