The Hawks fell in a heap against the Swans in the final home and away round of the 2022 VFL season and, consequently, ended up having to book flights up to the Gold Coast for a do or die elimination final against the Suns after the Blues edged out an inaccurate Collingwood last Sunday as the curtain raiser to the AFL game played later in the day by ten points. Box Hill's 57 point loss to the Swans and Carlton's ten point win over Collingwood saw enough of a change to the percentages of both clubs that the Hawks and Blues swapped positions on the ladder.
For their part, the Suns tuned up for finals by claiming a five point win over North Melbourne on Saturday morning, after the Suns' Chris Burgess
kicked his fifth goal of the game to take the lead away from North Melbourne. The match against North Melbourne was full of lead changes, with the Suns opening up a lead in the first quarter before North Melbourne briefly took the lead only to cede it to the Suns towards the end of the first quarter. The Suns eased out to a 20 point lead early in the second quarter, but North Melbourne kicked the next five goals either side of half-time to take the lead. The Suns pegged them back and the scores were level at three-quarter time. It was goal for goal for the first half of the last quarter before the Suns kicked the last two goals of the game to seal victory.
By contrast, the Hawks could hardly have had a worse preparation for the finals. The Swans bolted out of the gates and the match was effectively over by half-time with the Swans leading by 17 points. The Swans kicked well clear in the third quarter, keeping Box Hill to a point while adding seven goals themselves (7.5.47 to be exact). The Hawks put up some late resistance to make the scoreboard marginally more flattering, but the Hawks will have plenty of soul searching to do if they are to pull off the win and keep the season alive.
As usual, the match will be streamed via the AFL website and Box Hill will have regular score updates on its twitter channel.
