No one yet knows. It may have also not have been Membrey directly, but someone close to him.

As in it could even be a death, or other illness in the family, like with Hill early this year when his daughter was very ill in hospital.

In the 1997 both Winmar (Father died) and Loewe (His sister) played and both were well below their normal standard.
Had exactly the same thoughts re 97 walking to the ground.

we are well short of the talent required to compete with the big boys, falling into the finals because other teams around us were poor hopefully doesn't paper over list deficiencies, pretty certain Lyon doesn't overrate this list but I suspect we will not be as high on the ladder over the next few years while we rebuild. Comes back to the question of can our club build a list capable of being a sustained top 4 team.
How is it physically possible to fall into something when you were never outside it?

Well team, it’s been an epic journey this season. From the should we, should we have not, question of Ross Lyon at the start of the season, to the will we, won’t we question of making finals at the end (and even the final minutes where will we), it’s certainly been entertaining.

The match yesterday in and of itself was disappointing in terms of the result, but shows so much promise in terms of who performed and what else there is to hopefully come. For mine, our younger brigade outperformed our older brigade, and that was pretty pleasing. I am also really excited that we have Ross to demand excellence and give us the best chance at using this season as the ground floor for next.

This thread in itself went predictably feral after such a shattering loss, but has started to stabilise now. I guess we all just want success and express that in our own unique ways. I hope that those of us that got to the game managed a few hopeful moments to shout about. It’s always important to celebrate an early lead with aplomb, as you never know when you may again. We had a few runs to get the juices flowing and my part of the crowd certainly took advantage of those. I hope that all of us got some unrestrained cheers to cap off a wonderful season, albeit, a weeken or two too short.

In my world, it’s now officially cricket season. I have learnt that I don’t get too much from the trade thread, although others certainly do.

So it’s queue in the rack for big footy for me until pre season. Hope you all enjoy it until then and we get some decent trades and excellent draft picks through the door.

All the best and go Saints in 2024!

It was a weird game. Marshall on paper looks like he killed Briggs but it certainly didn't look that way at the ground. Marshall around the ground and his acts of pure will power stood out but when Briggs hit the ball to their mids it seemed to result in them fast breaking forward, Marshall's tap work just didn't have that same impact. Perhaps again all on our mids but Briggs looked very good.

Whenever the ball was in dispute their mids seemed to extract it easily and then their outside runners always had space. We seemed to be trying to block up around the ball and got left bunched together.

Same challenge all season tbh. Our guys aren't very good contested so to try to win the clearance they have to throw numbers at it, everyone gets sucked into the contest. That means if we win it in tight then there's no-one in space to give it to, and if we don't win it then they have lots of guys free to run.

We see this in the stats. We finished the year dead last for clearances (18th), even though our contested possession numbers are relatively high (ranked 6th). Huge discrepancy. The publicly available stats don't have anything about quality of clearances, but I'd be willing to bet that ours have the lowest average quality of any club.

Mids, mids and more mids.

This is clearly the biggest thing to be fixed in the off-season, which is why I'm personally not excited about Liam Henry. He's not a clearance player and that's what we need, so anything we spend on him isn't addressing our biggest problem.

Watched the first qtr, not sure if I can be bothered with the rest.

Result aside, great year guys and gals.

First time in a long time I hold hope for the short term - regardless of how much Gringo is trying to drag us all down.

Love you all, shout yourselves an Aero bar and make sure you look after you and yours xoxo

Clearances pretty even, we couldn't keep the ball in our fwd line and it went to the other end fast enough they scored easily and made our defence look poor.

Correct we lost this game in the forward area no synergy between King & Cama probably only played 2 or 3 games together & we played a forward line of under of kids 19,20,18 year olds a lot to look forward too.

Henry suits another need though. I think we need grunt and spread. Maybe SOS can do a GWS bin picking deal with Dow, Binns and O'Brien and see if O'B was just a late bloomer. The wave running suits us but a bull mid would make us so much more potent.

I think the defence struggled because the mids couldn't hold them down. They transitioned with no protest from us. Inside 50 kicking was back to terrible. We brought the ball up so slowly that they'd already set themselves.

The forwards weren't great but as you say they'll develop synergy with time.

Lost a bet. In other news Baghdad just lost too.
Glad I'm not the only one having to surrender their last shred of dignity ... I owe a co-worker a videoed rendition of the GWS song tomorrow, as he covered my shift so I could be at the game ...

He's lucky I value his contributions to our team, or he'd be getting my "Weird-Al" variation of their song ...

The Eastern European death march song? It always feels like it’s being sung by Borat to me. But it’s a not nice.

I love their song. It was stuck in my head all day. Jaunty but a dirge at the same time. Eastern Europeans know how to take the joy out of joyful.

Like the idea of getting Dow, Binns and O’brien.. Dow to the middle, O’brien and Binns behind the ball to provide run from defence, releasing Sinclair to the midfield..

If we can also get Will Philips or Will brodie, that’s our youngish inside midfielder sorted short term along with Liam Stocker. Whilst keep picking mids in the draft.
