AFL Player # 3: Darcy Parish

He's an All-Australian inside mid, who was leading the comp for centre clearances when up and about. We'd be mad not to re-sign him.

If people are worried about list-balance and ensuring the kids get some CBA time, let's have that discussion in the "Thanks for your service, Dylan" Shiel thread.

it's 3 including tsatas who'll get good quick, and they're doing pretty well for a young group
They're doing well, but depth never hurts.

Parish getting out lightning quick handballs to Tsatas who then turns on the burners does wet the lips a bit.

Don't fool yourself. Parish is vital for Essendon. All of the guys who stepped up in the last month had a crack, but offer more in the forward line or on a wing. Parish means we win more stoppages and then control the field position for more of the game. This allows us to cover for the fact that our defense is too short.

I don't disagree but recently we have been stomping centre clearances.

Keeping the ball in our forward half is our biggest problem right now.

Define recently. We beat Carlton but lost them to North, West Coast and Richmond in the 3 weeks prior.

4 and 4 for stoppage clearances with Parish
Compared to 3, 1 draw and 1 loss without him.

I think it's pretty obvious we defend stoppage better with Hobbs and Caldwell in there.
You don't reckon it has anything to do with playing 12, 15, 17 and 18?

Not really considering they aren't ranked there for stoppage clearances. Lions are 2nd, we drew with them, Beat Tigers, Eagles and North who are 7th, 10th and 12th. Lost to Blues who are 6th. We are 16th.

Fair enough, though Darcy does average more then any other Essendon player so do question how much the losses comes down to him.

Edit: That might be 2022. Long night here.

read that he’ll likely resign, as will reddog, im ambivalent about keeping him personally but it’s telling that we’re missing a facilitator in the middle with experience. as others have said he’s a good clearance player which is most important

My opinion or theory was based on list build and returns so it was a little different than just trade Parish because of his flaws. I agree Shiel should be looked at as well if we are discussing the list and where players fit. Problem with Shiel is he is unlikely to get you much in return if you are looking to get a possible asset for trading out a good player. If we where looking more long term Parish is the one with capital that gives you a better return. It comes down to where you think the window is at. I have no issues keeping him. He is a good player. I do think you can cover what he does with a few others and that is not saying he is any less of a player. He will stay. The club wats him. The coach wants him and he is not looking to go. That is fine. We will just have to make sure we have the players in place to make him a player who is in AA discussion every season.

A speculative extra pick in the 12-18 range (after all compo is done and academy) or whatever we end up with is not worth losing Parish for, especially with our track record of first round drafting.

If we were last and could go Harley Reid plus pick 2 (can make a massively beneficial trade with Gold Coast who need to get in early) you would think about it.

Pick 12-18 with our track record is a hell no. Now we sign redman and we can go after McKay since we don’t have to worry about our compo sliding.

Parish, Pick 12-18, McKay > 2x Pick 12-18.

Or Nic Martin. He’d have some trade value.

Heck of a non-sequiter, but ok. Cool. Now let me try: a fool and his money enjoys when he's farted

You caricature the arguments like everyone else does.

The only reason one could be critical of Parish is stupidity or irrational hatred.

Go and watch what he does with the clearances. And make sure you do it with the commentary off.

Essendon bigfooty page is the only club full of player critiques. 1 mistake or flaw and the player must be traded!

Mind boggles how Parish became the whipping boy by some. He is elite in most facets and seems onboard this year.

Same people would whinge if he went to Cats and won a Brownlow.
