As others have said, need to put on 15-20 kgs from his listed weight to compete with the big forwards.
Weight isn’t the issue. He’s developing fine in that regard. Photos of him this year show him much thicker than the version drafted. He’s also taller I believe. My guess to the eye is about 204 cms. He’s massive.

Hard to put on weight while also growing, but he has and will probably be optimal size in another 2 years. He’s big enough already to impact if he can stay healthy.

I still have high hopes for him. Just want to see him get a chance to play.

I suppose there are different player types. Fletcher wasn't a beast but was able to use his speed and exceptional reading of the game to spoil.

I haven't seen enough of Reid to know.

In any case, he has the height to make an impact. Hopefully gets a good preseason and can show some form.

Almost like a new recruit, exciting!

The priority has to be to get him playing as many games as possible.

He's ruck height with a very slight build. It's going to take him to year 6 before he starts to hit his straps physically.

It means playing him from a flank, as a third tall or even as 7th defender at least next year. Let Laverde and Ridley, assuming we have lost McKay, continue to fight with the big boys. Baldwin can do it too. Reid and Cox can provide aerial support. They don't need to be fully developed or monsters to do that.

Think of him as a really tall Jake Lever for now.

If we can get through half a season of VFL and his body holds up, then we can look at where Zach (and the team is at).
No point rushing him when his body seems that it can't handle VFL footy.

Good luck to him.

Laverde, Ridley and Baldwin can’t fight with the big boys, that’s the problem…

Might be wishful thinking but whenever I see Zach Reid’s name pop up I think of Harris Andrews.

Andrews’ is 6 years older and in his 9th season. Is anyone able to do a breakdown of Andrews’ career year by year?

Just happy for this guy to become a player, anywhere.

Forward, back, slowly, quickly don’t care, we need everything anyway.

Even if we don’t get McKay, I dont think we should be pencilling him in as one of our main key defender options for 2024, I think that’s silly.

Do what we should’ve done originally, take it extremely slow, build his body in a way that is able to sustain playing 18 games of footy a season - including a good chunk of those at vfl. Don’t be tempted by what rubbish the AFL team is dishing up, do what’s best by Reid. In what position you like.

I’m giving him 24 more months. Irrelevant of form, if he isn’t playing regular footy during/after that period of time, then we’ve gotta pull the plug.

Laverde and Ridley have done it well enough more than they haven't.

With Laverde in particular, the focus becomes even more checking run and upsetting positioning so that Reid can impact as the loose defender.

It's not ideal but we have to start somewhere and in a way that capitalises on what we have. It's really just Reid in the role that should be Ridley's.

Makes it hard with Heppell. So in reality this is all academic because we're going to waste the role on a 31 year old D grader we didn't resign to play VFL.

I'd seriously be hoping that Heppell isn't undroppable like he was this year. I know he's staying for leadership, and they might lock him into the firsts at the start of the year, but if there's a better option I hope they phase Hep out during the year. Let him help out in the 2's and see if he's got the potential to coach and guide the younger guys.

Retire mid-year and open up a MSD spot.

I am not convinced he is developing all that well weight wise. He was drafted at 82kg . Start of this year he was 90kg and I doubt he has put in more than 3kg this year given the time he has missed due to injury. I can see a situation where he will get to around 100kg but it may not be until he is 25. For comparison his brother is 203cm and 90kg heading into the draft. It is really hard for these guys to put on 15 plus kg and not get injured along the way. Will be easier for Archer as he only has to find 10kg over 3 or so years.
I tend to stay in hold mode when they can not get on the park for various reasons over several years. I do not see KPD in the next 2 years. Unlike Cox who I do not think will get to 100kg Reid does not have the speed off the mark to play as a slim KPD.

There were some photos maybe around May or June that gave me hope. You could see the frame filling out. But yep, he won’t be a KPD 1 for another 2 seasons. I’m not as across his mobility so won’t comment on whether he can reasonably play as number 2 or 3.

But I do have hope he maybe has some natural forward knack. That would solve a lot of problems as he could likely play a role there sooner. Plus we have that glaring need for a dangerous number 2 (if not for someone better than Wright)

He’s definitely the biggest mystery on the list. We can now see the way that Cox could make it, including how much heart and desperation he will need to find. Daveys and Wanganeen make sense, we know what Jones is at his best. Reid - still flying blind.

Given his injury issues I suspect they've not been trying to pack weight on him either though, so how easily he gains weight or not (pretty sure he was also still growing) is hard to say.

He's obviously not going to be built like a Hawkins or Charlie Dixon, but his height and reach means he might still be effective.

Did he have any injury issues as a junior?
No that I know off but he did come through 2020 and there was no under 18 season that year. Just a few early trial games.
