If the AFL goes with 5 on the bench I wonder if teams will do away with the second ruck option ala the Miller role and just go 2 genuine rucks? For example play Nankervis mainly through the start and end of games, give Ryan minutes through middle of the game which gives Nank a break and still have Ryan fresh if Nank gets injured to finish the game.

Would be an absolute waste.

You would play someone who can have an impact in short burst but might only be capable of playing 60% game time. Guys like Stack, Cumberland, RCD. Or it would be someone who can play a number of roles in the event you lost a player, the rotation wouldn't change.

With reduced rotations rumoured to be coming in as well this would be ridiculous

He will be our next big thing next season in an area we are vulnerable. Ruck/forward.

I have to agree with you. From what I saw from Sampson Ryan last year at VFL level, I was very excited by his skill set, read on the game and growing confidence. He really knows how to take a grab and is consistent in front of goal. What I was most excited by was the skills he possesses that most big men lack such as his clean hands at ground level and speed off the mark. His ruck work has improved considerably too as his size increases.

I think Ryan will only continue to grow into the role as he bulks up and learns to use this strength along side his height and skills. I really do think he will be a fantastic asset to our forwardline and ruck in the future.

Soldo just asked that you look at this again (below), and remember, the big boy has had just the one season back from rupturing both the ACL AND MEDIAL! Always, always give players a season on the park and another pre-season before writing them off is my golden rule.

Yup two years before they come good again!

Not sure why it's ridiculous when the your proposal was to play Ryan as the 5th guy off the bench who himself would only play 60% of game time and in all likelihood have zero impact.

As for my suggestion you would counter it with guys like Tarranto/Graham/Prestia/McIntosh (basically any of endurance based guys) playing more minutes. You would stop the pointless KPP interchanges, why guys like Tarrant and Lynch need to come to the bench at any stage unless to receive treatment is beyond me.

Think we should play Ryan in at least 10 games this year, needs regular senior matches. Offers a lot more potential than Soldo, if he can sort out his goal kicking routine he’ll trouble a lot of defences.

I don’t know why our coaches haven’t tried to sort out his routine? He lined up the goals like Ben Brown but then takes one hand off the ball and swings the ball in from the side to kick.

Not sure there is too much wrong with his kicking just that the wind was not allowed for , Its more about adapting to the ground rather than his kicking

I love this kid he has all the hallmarks to becoming a jet.
The one attribute that has him above all others is his aggressive nature.
He has the skills and he is a competitive beast.
We are witnessing the development of the next Max Gawn.

Would have liked to have seen him tried in the ruck also a bit more to see what he's like.

Think he'll play but only when Jack or Lynch can't. Have a feeling they'll go with Soldo or Miller to partner Nank.

I prefer Miller back than Young at this stage so if Tarrant is out round 1 then I'd play:

Grimes Miller Broad
Rioli Balta Vlastuin
McIntosh Hopper Pickett
Bolton Lynch Cumberland
Martin Riewoldt MRJ
Nankervis Tarrant Prestia
Short Cotchin Baker Soldo (Dow)

Unavailable: Tarrant, Ross, Gibcus, Graham, Smith
The rest to play VFL

I've had enough, now I want my share

Are we just not picturing him as a ruckman?

Seemed as though at VFL level last year he was exclusively a forward? Played both practise matches up forward. Did he play any ruck in the game before yesterday?

His strength was tap work at junior level and I’m pretty sure when he played his one and only AFL game he was playing ruck.

Why are they not giving him any time instead of Soldo? Is soldo keeping him from developing at ruck?

Could they not have tried him in the first half against gawn and Grundy? Couldn’t have been worse then soldo.

He played mainly ruck in the VFL last year and did well but he just doesn’t have the strength yet to play ruck effectively at AFL level.

Training with Nank, couldn't avoid becoming an aggressive understudy could he? I was quietly hoping that would happen to be honest 😉

Seems like the perfect sub rd.1
If Jack is not going, if Lynch is tiring. If Miller is needed back or not doing much 2nd ruck. Stretch Carltons defence if needed.
If Miller is playing in defence we need someone to provide ruck back up all game. I'd start Soldo or Ryan in Miller's position.
I haven't seen any games so whoever. Although it'd be good to have another look at Ryan at AFL level.
