It is lazy when you choose to look at it without context

Wasn’t Soldo matched up on Gawn around the ground? (Gawn took 8 marks) and had 11 direct score involments
Grundy who Nank was playing on around the ground only took 3 marks with 5 score involments
That’s a lazy analysis. Nank spent as much time on Gawn as Soldo. Gawns first mark and shot on goal Nank was his direct opponent. His first goal he had pushed forward Young failed to kill the contest slipped got up and kicked an open goal.

Soldo was better yesterday than Nank which is fact. V Carlton no doubt Nank will get the nod and as he should he is proven to be a better player

Just because you say it’s a fact doesn’t make it one

Soldo led some stats and Nank led some stats and depending an argument could be made they both had relatively poor games but to say Soldo was better is an opinion and merely cherry-picking stats to highlight the positives but ignoring ones that discredit it as proof is telling

Ok then. In my astute observation and in my humble opinion Soldo was better yesterday and the stats that mark a rucks influence back me up.

He’s ahead of Soldo for mine

For a permanent forward gig maybe.

Ryan looked great in the air yesterday, but let's not forget that for much of the period he was getting great opportunities yesterday 1:1 against his opponent with fast ball coming in, it was Soldo beating Gawn that was bringing those opportunities.

Soldo's forwards knock to Bolton moving at top speed and the resulting clearance going deep inside-50 in the 4Q was the highlight of the day for me. That's what I want to see lots more of.

Original oppo
Hahah been here longer than most. 2007 in fact.(no Orange peeler) Just had a few year sabbatical.
Nank has nothing to prove except fitness.
Get back to me when soldo actually is effective as Nank around the ground when the real stuff starts
I was literally talking about yesterday. The post said “based on yesterday Soldo was in front of Nank”

My apologies.Read the tea leaves wrong.

I agree. Soldo was better than nank on sat. People have blind love for nank as he is captain and done well in the past, but the fact remains he is uncompetitive against the likes of gawn/grundy/tall rucks. He had a terrible game last week too. Atleast soldo can halve those contests and tap to advantage to bolton occasionally etc which is rare for nank. He takes a handy mark which nank had zero which is telling for a big guy.

For what it is worth, ryan in my mind is a forward with his surprising agility. In my mind he is the Jack replacement, even perhaps this year, and therfore can play second ruck which leaves us the advantage of a faster forwardline.

Centre ruck contests are 50/50.Pending on the bounce.
Around the ground Soldo is useless more than Nank is at centre bounces.
Would you prefer losing a 50/50 contest in the middle or the oppo ruckman(Gawn) going fwd with Soldo 20mtrs behind?

He played mainly ruck in the VFL last year and did well but he just doesn’t have the strength yet to play ruck effectively at AFL level.
And that has been my knock on him since his days at Sherwood Qld. Face to face rucking he will get a few nice taps to advantage, around the ground when body to body he has been soundly beaten (especially at boundary throw ins), even by blokes 15 to 30cm smaller as they concentrate hard on out positioning him - it has always be so.

When we recruited him I hoped he would get some size and vigour, and what he did in that much shown warm-up Saturday probably goes some way to confirm that vigour is well and truly his short suite and it is being manufactured somehow.

I would have Soldo over Nank when we're up against the likes of Gawn, Grundy, English, Witts, Nic Nat etc. with Miller/Ryan as 2nd ruck since these ruck have both size and ruck craft over Nank, and Soldo at least had the size to compete with them.

If we're up against someone like Sean Darcy, O'Brien, Marshall, Hickey, Lycett, etc. I don't mind Nank with Miller/Ryan, since I personally don't think their ruck craft is miles better than Nank, and the only thing they have over Nank is size.
Nank pretty much nulified Gawn's effectiveness round 6 last year. Nank 21 disposals v Gawn 19. Hit outs Nank 24 v Gawn 30. It was a practice game, Nank was not going flat out, why would he. Soldo has much more to prove.

Getting back to Samson, great development in the offseason.

Big ✅ for forward craft, seems to be hitting the packs. I like him because he seems to have a little bit of mongrel. Not just one of those gangly uncoordinated 208cm giraffes. If you stand infront of him, in a marking contest, he’ll crunch you. And seems to have strong dukes, one grab.
I can’t see him making it as a permanent forward, but he could become a really handy player in combination with Nank as a forward/ ruck.
Right now does he get the gig infront of Soldo or Miller? I don’t think they will go with him first up, but if he can prove that his ruck work is on a par or at least not far behind Soldo then surely he gets the nod. Big Ivy as backup, Miller to play as a swingman

Long term I think Ryan should actually replace Jack in the forward line, which allows us to play one less ruck and make space for Cumberland to play a hybrid marking role as the third "tall" down forward, rather than having to fit into the typical small forward mould.

Agree 100% I really like him as a forward prospect but one who can still pinch hit in the ruck contests

My only concern would be and I don’t think it’s a massive issue but he plays a very similar style of game to Lynch
That real bash and crash/ lead out type of kpf where Jack is a genuine airman with a massive leap

Would Ryan and Lynch together get in each others way?
Like I said don’t think it’s a massive issue and we still have guys like Bolton and Cumbo who can fly for marks but definitely something worth keeping an eye on imo

Why not give it a gol, or at least the sub where you can bring him in if necessary. He has always had a bit of mongrel in him, but now looks big enough to impose himself a bit more.

Jack is no more a marking target. Last season he got most of his goals using his forward craft, leading, one out marking, crumbing etc. He is not the crash the pack player because he doesn't get off the ground like he used to, his one wood in years gone.

So do we leave it all to Lynch who is a bit underdone. It makes it very easy for the intercepter if we don't play another arial target for them to second guess.

Was a bit surprised they didn't play Miller down forward, but I guess he played there against North. Evidently played well in the VFL match before so maybe that is still the plan, give him a good hit out. Anyone see that game to confirm where he played.

Right now Samson is the ideal 3rd tall / ruck chop out for Nank.

Has been since he arrived, the best forward of the lot. He has played incredibly well at VFL since we recruited him, just needed some strength added and now look at him.

Will be our best ruck in a couple of years easy and will be so damaging forward. Very few players at 206cms can move and mark like this kid.

I have been banging on about him for 18 months, this kid is going to be a very good player.

Hope his early season form keeps building. Miller + Sampson relieves a huge amount of pressure on our KPF stocks. If they can be decent B graders and chop out in the ruck then we are set for a nice long period of continuing contending.

I like what Sampson brings, but he has proven nothing as yet. Very few guys picked up late like him make it as KPFs. But if they do it is a HUGE win. Frees up our recruiting and balances the list cheaply.
