He clunked plenty in the vfl last year. It'll come with maturity. Kid will be a premium ruck.
Not really as he dropped more. I’m still uncertain with his future at this stage. I need to see him in 12-18 months time.
His deficiencies have not improved since last year so it’s a concern.
Old bloke from church rates him heaps , but he’s probably you or Meteoric Rise lol 😊😉

I remember when Brendan Gale couldn't take a mark in his 1st season.
Yeah that's how old I am lol
I dont

Only real deficiency he has atm is maturity IMO. Has all the tools.

Won't catch me at a church ;)

Yes , but he can’t mark, no balance and a pushover. A lot of it is strength, but some of it is positioning, technique and mental toughness. I think he’s got to sort these out before he goes back with the big boys as confidence may be the biggest issue. He was allowed to get games for six weeks where he was being knocked around. I want to see him destroy it at vfl before I see him in the seniors.

Benny had that same clumsiness about him as Ryan shows early in his career. A very good point and it took Benny years to start clunking them more as a ruck playing a kick behind the play. So this may have to be Ryan’s role as well as I can’t see him being a forward.

Ryan matches up pretty well to Soldo already.

Soldo ranks 6th for total marks as a ruckman, Ryan 15th
Soldo ranks 4th for score launches behind Darcy, Briggs and O'Brien

Hitouts to advantage % Ryan is number 1, and Soldo ranks 4th, but the numbers are skewed a bit since Soldo had only 52% ruck contests and Ryan had 28% for ruck contest percentage.

Hes tracking very well for a project ruckman.

Hope this kid can continue on the upward trajectory next season. If we lose Soldo could play a big role in our side over the the next 12 months. Thought he started really well in the beginning of the 23 season then dropped off pretty quick as he became worn out with the increased intensity from the firsts. Big off-season will hopefully see him carry through for longer in 24. I wanna see Samson come back next year shredded and ready to tear it up for us!

he has potential
has a rig like richo
looks a bit like richo
runs funny and kicks over 55m similar style to richo
marking is no.1 wood like richo

if he ends up half as good as richoman, we have a gun.
I've always said and thought, if he comes along again like did last year improves a bit with a couple of little bags of 3 and 4g
they already have Richo's number 12 in mothballs waiting for him.

He took plenty in the 2022 season in the VFL. For some reason his marking confidence - the fumbling occurred this season in both levels. He took some good ones in the Adelaide game.

His body is not strong enough and he gets moved out of position so easily. Even in the ruck in the VFL the ruckman was jumping into him and he struggled a bit. He is fine if he gets a free run at it. That will improve but he has a fair way to go. He has very good ruck craft though.

Had far less to do with clumsiness than the fact he couldn't see the ball well with the contact lenses of that era.

His improved marking late career coincided exactly with an improvement in lenses, there was a story about it in the early noughties.

I would argue their numbers aren't really comparable at this stage beyond the handful of games each spent as a no.1 ruckman (and not really even then due to a range of confounding factors).

Soldo is well ahead on that comparison, but again, it's apples and oranges - most of Ryan's stats are against 2nd string rucks and even his only two games as a #1 ruck were against two players nobody includes as #1 rucks - Williams and Ceglar.

It is, IMO, important to note when weighing the Soldo trade and Ryan's immediate ability to replace him, that following those two games as a #1 ruck, Ryan fell off a cliff in terms of output, which is why Soldo was rushed back into the side late season.

Not Ryan's fault, he's still a kid, but he's also not going to magically morph into a genuine #1 ruck over one pre-season, so if Nank doesn't play the vast majority of games next year, we're going to be asking a hell of a lot of him to stand in and it's difficult to see how that could pan out well for either our season or his long term future.

I think we'd be asking way too much of him, so let's hope Nank miraculously plays every game and we don't need to tax Ryan's body too hard just yet. :thumbsu:
