Player Watch #34: Jack Graham - MOVED TO WCE - PICK 42 Received

Personally I would be getting Edwards and Cotchin out of there. Edwards more time spent forward and Cotch to the backline and conserve their bodies for the most part of the season ala Hodge and Hawthorn during their three-peat. While i acknowledge Graham wasn't good enough last night I don't buy the notion he doesn't find the footy enough to justify his selection for two reasons. Firstly we are low possession so anyone getting around 16-20 touches a game is good enough which Graham generally gets around. Secondly he spends less time on the ground for most of his team mates which obviously effects his disposal count but it does enable Martin to go forward and have zero defensive game and it also means Graham is constantly running at a high speed and putting enormous pressure on the opposition. We don't have access to Champion Data pressure points but if we did I would surprised if Graham didn't feature within the top 5 for midfielders.

In saying that if Ross, RCD, Stack and Dow do prove better options going forward than that to me says we in a very good position as when talking about bottom 6 players if Graham is one of them than that means you have a strong team.

AFL site has pressure acts, Graham was the highest for Richmond and equal second highest on the ground.

He was also the leading player for tackles for Richmond and second highest on the ground.

Rioli was second highest for pressure acts and tackles for Richmond.

Do pressure acts as a midfielder mean you are not getting your hands on the ball and are chasing arse.

Pressure acts and pressure points are different. Pressure acts are simply chasing an opponent, points are more detailed do a better job of reflecting how good a players pressure is/was.

Case in point Rioli being number 2 for pressure acts but literally waiting for him opponent to get the ball. Graham at least got the ball himself plenty of times on friday night but couldn't dispose of it.

The bottom line is we have a good crop of midfielders. The obvious one's with a good crop of young maybe's, Bolton, Stack, Ross, RCD, Dow coming through, all with far greater upside than Graham, plus others on the cusp like Pickett. But it doesn't always go to plan, so if Graham can make his mark now while a few are missing then he may well cement a spot.
Lets be frank here.A good crop won't win you flags.
None of the above even come close to being the next Cotch.

Graham had 6 possessions on Friday night.

In other words, they were the two players who were led to the ball behind an opponent most.

im gonna go out on a limb here.....when star players are around him he performs better
I mean it sounds pretty obvious but I reckon it's true! When we have our star offensive players in the team we can afford to have his defensively focused game, although now we're a bit lacking offensively so that deficiency in his game is more exposed

Disagree, Stack will be a star and Bolton is growing every week. Was probably best on at half time. Balta is close to Rance at the same stage of his career. Bit early with Dow, who knows.

Agree Bolton is growing. He's Sheds Mk2 in the making.Balta is showing good signs.
But tell me who is close to Cotch or Dusty at the same age?
No one because if they were they would be in the side already.

Granted it helps to have a Martin type to win grand finals, the great players get you there, but not necessarily. WC 2019, Bulldogs. But if you can get a good group together you can do it. Stack has the talent, probably the best first year I've seen behind Richo talent wise. Bolton made GC's mids look pedestrian at times last week. We are there abouts for a year or two still, who knows what you can develop or recruit in that time.

No question Stack has talent.
But does he have the application.

He had same teammates v Roos and was one of his best games , pretty hot and cold player. If you wanted to be brutal you’d say his best isn’t best enough to overshadow his poor games where he barely touches it . Gotta be better jack

Well you couldn't question his application last year. Maybe he has struggled with the isolation factor this year. Maybe he is the kind of kid that doesn't cope with being locked up and not hanging with his teammates and club atmosphere.
Second year blues, early in the season, rather him coming good now than running out of steam like last year.

Had to go. Clearly his shoulder is not right, give him some time to get it right.
I love his endeavour, hardness, selflessness and commitment (and overall he seems like a great bloke), but I just don’t think he’ll be a regular for us moving forward. You’ll struggle to carve out 150+ games in this day and age being a short, slow mid who can’t find the pill. He has no weapons. A good depth player to come in and play a role, but that’s about it I’m afraid. I really hope I’m proven wrong though.

I do worry for Graham and how long he can stay on our list
I think it comes down to pace and to a lesser extent reflexes in heavy traffic

but he does work hard and does do a lot of good work
and I feel he straightens up our attack

I hope his body holds up so he can have a good crack at winning his spot back
maybe he need cyril rioli's sprint coach ? try and grab an extra yard of pace
