Review #36: Matthew McDonough

Was watching Matty McDonough's highlights on the AFL.com site and at the two minute mark of the vision he easily outpoints the W.A defender twice in a row for easy marks and goals. That W.A Defender in both cases was.........Kamdyn McIntosh !!!!!!!!!

I'm conflicted...is this good or bad?

Maybe McDonough is just that good ;)

Or maybe McIntosh is more suited as a midfielder as our recruiting department have labelled him from the outset ;)

Im more excited about MM than l am about the other three. Seriously this bloke has swagger. I've only seen the reels that everyone else has seen, but the minute l saw him, he reminded me of a young D. Jarman. I dont know if it was the Adelaide connection, or more the heavy legged but super intelligent forward that seems to know how to make the most of things.

McBean and the other bloke... fair enough, but l like McDonough. BOOM! :thumbsu:

exactly as I see it wal, we havent had a goalkicking freak since browny came and went...here's hoping this kid can put it together, looks to have some serious tricks in the bag

in juniour club footy under 12's and 14's, 16's he was an absolute freak. hes always been a big boy but in under 12's he somehow managed to take about 2 or 3 really good hangers a game. at his juniour club "flinders park" he played alongside jimmy toumpas (this years #4 pick) in the midfield and I always thought plugger was slightly better......it was only after club football at the SANFL clubs at under 18s level that i thought toumpas overtook plugger

pretty sure plug captained the under 12 sa state team aswell.

Impressive Matt finish
richmondfc.com.au Exclusive to AFL BigPond Network

Richmond’s fourth, and final, pick (No. 42 overall) in the 2012 AFL National Draft, Matt McDonough, has plenty going for him in his quest to make the grade at the game’s highest level.

The Tiger talent scouts liked what they saw of the strongly-built forward/inside midfielder over the past couple of years, while he was representing South Australia at the national under-18 championships, and playing under-age football with his SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens.

The Roar is Back in 2013, become a member today.

Coach of the SA under-18s, and SANFL high performance manager, Brenton Phillips, agreed with the Richmond recruiters’ assessment of McDonough’s ability.
“Matt is an elite kicker of the football and only needs a handful of possessions to end up with five goals,” Phillips said.

“He has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time to find his possessions.”

McDonough was SA’s leading goalkicker during the under-18 carnival for two consecutive years, scoring 14 goals from five games in 2011 and 17 goals from five appearances in 2012.

He also impressed with stints in the midfield, racking up 38 possessions on two occasions for Woodville-West Torrens and 28 touches, plus four goals in the team’s under-18 grand final win this year.

Phillips, a Magarey Medallist with SANFL club North Adelaide, who also played 71 games of league football for both Essendon and the Brisbane Bears, believes McDonough eventually will be capable of having an impact in the midfield at AFL level.

“He will be able to push through the midfield, as he develops into an outstanding competitor,” Phillips said.

Impressive:thumbsu: Could be a real steal this kid!

Yeah I Like the look of Matt, get the feeling that he will be the player who will play a year or so in the 2's but eventually develope into a regular player!

Much like the "other Matt" I think will be our direct replacement for Tucky in Matty Arnot, I expect both to play a few games this year, not a lot but enough to get a taste of AFL footy!

at the end of the day the reports are basically all good. But we know all to well that the step up to the top flight more often than not renders these types of reports useless. We wait and see and if he lights it up where it matters. i.e on the big stage.

I like kids with a long history of being good at a high level for their age. It shows they didn't just impress recruiters with a video (hello JON). Guys like Michael Barlow had a cupboard full of trophies before he was picked up. You cannot fluke all of them. So if Matthew can show just a little application he will be a great find for us!
Good luck son!
