When everyone was crying about how good Massimo is now I made a point of highlighting the recency bias pervading the AFL industry. Granted, Marto wasn’t an out-and-out wingman this year but as a point of comparison he had a vastly superior season to Mass. He was easily the better player of the two for the first 2/3 of the season, kicked multiple goals from HB and got his own ball in congestion regularly. But because Mass had a flying finish to the season in a winning team he gets elevated to AA squad hype. Mass only outdoes Marto in the field-kicking department, nothing else.

Quoting myself as way of referral. Mass 10th in the Hawks BnF, and Marto 2nd in ours. Recency bias in AA selection confirmed by Hawks inner sanctum. Anyone would think he’d have been top 3 based on all the hype surrounding his good run-in to the finals form.

People shit-canning Mass need to just accept that we made a blue too, though - it happens. Not the end of the world, but some fans refuse to believe it was a stuff up. Which it out and out was.

Martin can be a superior player (and is) - and how we handled Mass can be a stuff up. Not mutually exclusive.

My focus is to do with the recency bias and the fact that AA selectors could only see far enough back in the season to see one player’s output but not the other. I don’t give a shit about the debate around list management mistakes being made or whatever…

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Mass had a break out year on the wing for a team who won a final. Martin ran around the backline racking up cheap ball (not his fault, it appeared that was his job) for a side that finished 11th.

I can see why Mass got the call. Who really cares? I'd like Mass on the list, but thankfully Martin/Duurs is a pretty nice wing combo.

When I have a good hard think about it. Aside from Zerrett! I think this guy is our next closest chance of something in the near future that could be resembling elite! I keep listening to his criticisms but at the end of the day he shows elite abilities at different ends of the grounds. If he can just be able to wear the contact he would be Hird like! Either that or hone his skills of weaving through the traffic abilities!

I feel the exact same way. Every time I read a post bemoaning of our lack of elite players (so every week) I think of Martin and what could be. Still reckon the sky is the limit.
