Its only a matter of time before South Australia follows in the footsteps of Victoria. The more clubs equals longer seasons in return more money to splash. Higher salary caps, higher player salaries, lower membership prices so more members will be signing up. More money means more and bigger stadiums. Its an open shut book.

Norwood open to the idea? Would be awesome to bring that old rivalry with Port into the AFL.

I reckon the old rivalry with port is embodied in the crows rivalry

If port are going to China because they can't get enough coin locally I wouldn't imagine Norwood would struggle

Apparently the crows colours represent all the old SANFL clubs except port (allegedly deliberately)

Playing in China was to develp a friendly basis with a country that is above and beyond in technology. To expand our game into one of the most influential cultures/countries in the world. The sports based science that China is heavily into is a huge boost to AFL. The money was a bonus everyone is to closed minded that the bigger picture never gets looked at. Hence why Vic got their noses up and send one of their own into it to help develop a healthy relationship with Vic and its government

More clubs = more money.... in the long run obviously there is factors to account for such as to make money you need to spend it

So would Norwood have the money and backing to apply for an AFL license? Or any other sanfl club?

Or would a third SA club be another generic franchise?

I doubt personally they would at this given time but if it was something that was prepared and not rushed it could be something that could potentially happen. But and the big but is they wouldn't have the fan base it would have to be a situation where the people get to decide on a logo, name, team colours etc that will bring people to the franchise. Make it a predominantly a family/peoples club to build up the fan base/memberships. An attractive club grows and to be attractive you need to be heading somewhere but most importantly you need the fan base behind it. Fans are like the stock holders of a club. But foremost the SA government would need to step up get behind them and build a new stadium. Big steps and a timely operation but like i said the big picture is fundamental.

No but there is more chance of them than another "generic franchise" - 4/5ths of fa versus 2/5ths of fa

Based on population and economy, WA could be a reasonable option for a third club (though based on the relevant 3rd WA club thread, the locals don't want it and don't believe it would have enough support). There's no realistic chance of any 3rd SA club.
WA is by far the worst comparison if you are throwing out population and economical booms. WA in retrospect of size comparison is mostly barron, the only economic growth is in Perth. The only real population occurs along the coast the rest is dead hence why its the mining state. Just because the WA thread suggests its not going to happen does not mean that is the case here.

Surely this thread is a troll/joke.
How is this a troll tread? I genuinely think expanding the AFL is a formidable topic to discuss? If you're not into it then by all means dont click on the thread to comment as your comment actually is a troll comment.

Given the second SA club is $10m plus in debt (and only behind St Kilda amongst the non expansion clubs) this thread is a moot point...

...and that club is clearly the grandest of non-VFL traditional clubs

Norwood might recover a majority of its traditional supporters back from the Crows if they are lucky

No chance. Sure I'd love to see Port v Norwood rivalry transplanted to the national comp but that chance has passed.

The last 35 years, South Australia has achieved the dual stat of at least matching the national average economic growth and the national average population growth, maybe twice in the same year.

It has matched or been greater than national average economic growth probably 12-15 times in that 35 years.

SA's population share of the nation is decreasing every year. In 1984 election when the number of seats in the House of Reps increased from 125 to 148, because the senate seats increased from 64 to 76, SA had 13 of the 148 seats. It now has 10 of the 151, and given the constitution says the senate has to be about half the size of the house, there wont be an increase of senators from 12 to 14 for a long, long time. By the end of twenties, that will be reduced to 9 seats, if the current population growth trends continue.

There are maybe 3 companies in the ASX 200 who have their HQ in Adelaide - Santos, Beach Energy/Petroleum and Adelaide Brighton Cement. International corporations don't put their Oz HQ in Adelaide apart from a few of the big defence companies and they dont need to sponsor sports clubs.

The AFL don't schedule the SA teams for many games on 7 for national coverage to encourage sponsors to get value from the billboard component of a jumper sponsorship. The AFL's biggest revenue stream is TV and media rights. There aren't enough eyeballs in SA to justify a 3rd team when there are shit load more eyeballs and more importantly, new eyeballs in the rest of Oz.

It wont happen without a fundamental shift in population growth over a 20 year period.

Tassie is a different case of righting a historical wrong and 500,000 people base in a traditional heartland with no team.

Absolutely valid point. Thank you for your knowledge. But how many supporters follow an interstate team surely those are significant numbers?

What is an interstate team? A Non victorian team? A team from the state you aren't living in?

A team that isn't in your home state. I know a lot of SA's that follow an interstate team and im sure a lot of people from other states follow interstate teams. Like i said previously for it to happen it would need to be the peoples team let them have input therefore developing a bond and following/supporting the expansion team. Expansion teams dont have a home state supporter group its spread over Aus and these days growing to other countries growing the numbers that watch AFL.

Perth itself is bigger than South Australia in population and economy.

I know those that are opposed to it will fire away all the negetives attached to it, thats to be assumed as its a natural instinct to hate change. Its the way AFL is heading and has been for quite some time.

Population as ive just discovered, yes you are 100% correct. Happy to admit when i am wrong but also in saying that when did this become a pissing contest? My question was IF the people had the say in team decisions ie logo, team colours etc would that be enough to incorporate a 3rd SA team.

Lots doesn't really mean much. Lots would supply marginal income for clubs, but not the core income stream.

We already have Port having to fight to be a financially successful club in SA. Throwing a third club into the mix would be a bigger financial drain than the Suns
