Player Watch #4 Dustin Martin GOAT and King of Punt Rd - OFFICIALLY RETIRED

Just about impossible to compare players from different eras as the game evolves so much.
From Jack Dyer to Royce and KB to Dusty... absolute legends of the Richmond Football Club.
So much of our identity comes from Captain Blood, the old school "Eat 'Em Alive" Tigers.
The resurrection of the club from the late 60's had Royce and KB leading the pack... a talented and tough pack it was.
Martin is the shining light of our current champion team with Cotchin, Reiwoldt and Rance also major influences.
For a player to be in the conversation with Matthews, Hart and Bartlett... doesn't get any better than that.
I have had Royce Hart on a pedestal since I first saw him play in 1967 and the memories are a strong as ever... I am wavering and another couple of seasons like the last four!
Reckon Richo is a bit left out in this greatest talk of greatness. Was unfortunate for him that he went through the worst period in recent history for the RFC, but in today's team he would be unstoppable, a bit like Martin. Nobody I have seen could do what he did, Franklin close. Had a few foibles, kicking for goals from straight in front and perhaps a dummy spit here and there, but was perhaps the greatest athlete to play the game and could actually back it up with football ability.

Wonder how he would’ve taken to Emma Murray and mindfulness? I reckon it’s a big reason we perform so well in the pressure moments.

he often topped the contested mark count and some of those were rippers

the whole ground knew we'd kick it to Richo, he would have 3 and 4 blokes hanging off him most marking contests

I know the whole industry has improved the defensive craft but you cant help but feel he'd still clunk plenty in todays game

Highest contested mark player in recent history. Richo Average 2.77. Next Matthew Lloyd@2.09. Travis Cloke @2.04. Nic Riewoldt@1.92. Jack Riewodt 1.61
Highest mark inside 50: Richo@3.84. Hall@3.64. Lloyd@3.62. Fevola@3.47. Jack riewoldt@3.03
Richo 3rd highest total mark average @8.05 behind Gary Dempsey 8.86. Nick Riewoldt 8.76.

And he was better than any of those mentioned at ground level.

Fair player.

This man has posted nothing at all on his Instagram since we’ve won the grand final, no posts of glory, nothing. He hasn’t been active at all.

Until today.

Reposts Houli’s book in his story.

Then later today, reposts Marlion Pickett’s book.

That’s it. Champion. ****ing boss.

1000% he has a private profile on there for just him and the boys!

The ONLY reason Richo is left out of that conversation is the lack of team success. In terms of ability he'd make our best ever 22 - you could play him in several positions and, arguably, he'd be first choice in all of them.

Must be true. I got the t-shirt to prove it.

Whoever did that really captured the physics of the moment. I've watched that goal 100 times and Dusty was on his toes just like that, and Danger slipped away into oblivion.

Ranking Dusty's GF goals I would go:
1/His first goal, collects ball , delivers a don't argue sprinting away from goal and snaps behind himself from 35m.
The unbelievable skill and the time of the game make it number 1.
2/ Last quarter handball steal off Stanley, brushes aside Dangerfield, powerful snap from the boundary.
Just exquisite skill , anticipation and balance.
3/Handball recieve under pressure , sidestep and 55m low grubbing torp .An audacious and inspiring goal .
4/ Right foot slider from 40m after contesting a spoil.
Another incredible moment in the game and again elite skill and balance.
