Player Watch #40: Eddie Ford - re-signed until end of 2025

I like Eddie and think he will make it but based on exposed form Curtis has him covered right now. In fairness it would be best to compare at the end of this year once Eddie has had 2 years in the system. Ideally they are both guns.
Eddie has been far more consistent than Taylor in terms of recent form. imo it's 50/50 between them, whoever looks readier come round 1

I like the both of them, it’s Bailey Scott that I’m more worried about in the mid/forward space, he’s tidy enough but ultimately I’m not sure what his ‘trick’ is.

Eddie reminded me a little of Dermie last year but that may have just been the hair.

Recent form? He has played 3 games and his last game he had 9 possessions. He has no form to speak of or consistency to reference. A good pre season and he could play round one, but let's not overdo the form aspect. As it stands he and plenty of others enter this preseason with a clean slate and his Trackwork, and pre season match form is what counts for round 1.

Eddie brings the heat to the scoreboard- goals and assists

I like Taylor but he doesn’t do enough - needs more hurt factor
If today and what people have reported on throughout the rest of the preseason is anything to go on then they're not competing for the same position. Taylor seems to be spending most of his time up the ground this pre season whereas Ford looked almost like a quasi-CHF today.

Ford had a really good game though. He's there or there about. In that 20-26 group of players i reckon.

Yes agreed

Can’t see us playing 3 talls fwd with both Zurhaar and ford.

Ford might only get his go if we go with 2 talls or Cam spends more time through the middle

Whilst we all hope Zurhaar re-signs, I’m losing less sleep over that now. Ford has the capability to step into his shoes as the X factor 3rd forward.

Surely he needs to play some good senior footy first before thinking he is even remotely ready to fill cams shoes. Cam is a gun, a deadset gun.

He's only played 4 games. His stats from those four games are very similar to Cam's tho. Early days obviously but we were saying similar things about CZ early on too.

I’m not with you here, I’ll lose sleep on the Bulls re-signing. He is a dead set gun and can rip a match open. If you think Ford has those capabilities, pretty sure we can fit them
Both in the 22.

Losing Bull would set us back badly as he's one of the few reliable senior guys with a hardened body we have. He's crucial for our approaching finals campaigns.

The good thing about Eddie and bull is they provide just as much pressure as small forwards so we lose nothing playing them and having less traditionally smaller forwards
Yep, athletic and can take a clunk. If Ford is good enough he can play next to cam, but he is a long long way from replacing him

Great so still a few years off then.
He's played one season.

But he looks alright on the forward line. If Zurhaar went down with injury I think he'd still do okay. Not a replacement but he'd still give a good account of himself. In three years he might provide Cam with real competition but it would be worth playing both of them if he got that good.

I think our best mix of fire-power, defensive pressure, x-factor, aerial threat and link up play for the first few rounds is -
Bull - Ccj/Goldy - Eddie
Mahony - Souv - JHF/Tarryn/Sleevo/Taylor rotating

If Comben or Curtis start knocking the door down in the 2's then it might be time to reassess

As part of his development I think we'll be seeing him rotate through the midfield at VFL level. Has been training a bit with the mids over the pre-season and the club has been impressed with his vision in close.

He played a fair bit as a mid at the Jets and was a pretty handy clearance player because of his ability to read the ball of the hand.

Didn't Eddie ask Freo for Fyfe highlights so he could study his clearance work?

If the majority of our HFF's can at least pinch hit through the middle/wing (Mahony, Taylor, Ford, Zurhaar) on top of being able to send the mids (Thomas, Sleevo, Jy, Greenwood, Anderson, JHF, LDU) forward for little stints it offers us so much freedom. The mids can go a little harder because that dont have to do it for quite as long.

Knows where the goals are and if he can add the midfield craft too then happy days. Has a Stevie J factor about him.
