What Essendon used to do back in the 80s and 90s is develop players until they were ready for seniors.
When the VFL lists had 52 players on them and you could give blokes 3 years in the seconds.

It was a simpler time, it was a better time.

Outside of some of the smaller clubs struggling financially, I wonder why list sizes aren’t bigger? The rookie list is an absolute farce these days so just get rid of it and make overall lists bigger. Would be great to have some real low risk project players.

Guess the top players don’t want that same pool split between 12 more people. That’s a decent pay cut to have to take

The rookie list should absolutely just be amalgamated with the main list and leave the cat B rookie spots.

Is it because teams like norf can't afford bigger lists? The AFL keep drinking the socialist koolaid

The AFL effectively pays the bulk of player wages via club distributions of the TV income. It's a non-issue.

North is also pretty financially sound and have removed pokies. If there's anything to laugh at them about, that ain't it.

It's easy to be financially sound off pokies when the other clubs prop you up.

A lot of hope for a guy who hasn’t been seen at AFL level before. We know he can dominate VFL but the jump up isn’t always that easy and he is coming back from an injury.

Let’s see how he goes in preseason games before declaring him our saviour across the wing or flanks.
He just looked so much at ease in VFL than most of other blokes who played in VFL last season. That four goal performance was so impressive. Fingers crossed it translates to AFL

Hope so. Fingers and toes crossed

Boo.

The TV deal is shared evenly between all clubs (as it should be) afl players only make 28% of total revenue. Compared to NBA players at 51% and NFL at 48%

Collective bargaining is what makes everything work and clubs with seperate revenue streams beyond that can use it for other things but it’s not required for players

Uh. What?

Are you arguing North dont get additional cash from town hall?

Cool.

Has nothing to do with my point but ok. 🤷‍♂️

Your point was that north is only solvent due to handouts and couldn’t afford to pay salary if it was more expensive due to more list spots.

My arguement is AFL house is making a lot more overall revenue compared to other major sports leagues (by percentage) and could easily be giving more money to all teams for player salaries/admin if they wanted to.

So complaining about north getting a handout is missing the point that all clubs should probably get a bit more and definitely enough for every club to be solvent.

Not even remotely close. Where did I mention salaries? Or say they're only solvent due to handouts?
