Round 12???

James Earl Jones Reaction GIF

Very speculatively - he's come back very heavy and blew up during a rudimentary skills session yesterday. They are pretty happy with where he is at (considering the relatively short period of time between deciding to play again and returning to the club) but are aware he has a lot of work to do.
It still won't take till round 12 to get match fit if he's committed.

I hope not, I'm ecstatic for you guys to have such a livewire back at the club. He is a bit of a heart and soul player and has that cult hero status to him. He's great for the game and great for the young indigenous boys you'll pickup this year.

They could get Jade AFL fit by round 1 let alone a bloke with working knees.

This. We've got about 6 months until Round 1, that's more than enough time to lose 30kg if done right, let alone about 10 to 15 that he'd have to lose at most.

In fact I'll say the off-season period probably gives him more optimism than if he were to do it while watching the boys play from the sidelines. This way they're all in it together for half a year and there's no feeling of missing out. If he's committed, he can get it done.

6 months? More like four and a half.

I would not be surprised if he plays the first 2-3 games in the seconds, but after that I reckon he'll be cherry ripe.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he loses interest by January and retires again

Oh well that would make up for the fact he holds the record at Essendon for the most consecutive games in the AFL era. Not bad for a little fatty. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ekes out another 80 games but what do I know.
