the EGG showed in just his 4th game how easy it is to play Houli,s role.
But he didn't play Houli's roll. Most of DES's possessions were 30m short passes, often many in a chain of moving the ball around the backline to create an out. He used the ball with a precision that belied his experience and was quite new to Richmond. Short played Houli's roll where he rebounded and kicked the ball long. Houli does that better but Short was okay.
Was Houli missed, not particularly, but let's not forget North were witches hats and comfortably warming the bottom of the ladder. As Leppa said, the difference between the established and non established players are that they do it week on week. Let's not get carried away after one week.

Is such a fantastic user of the ball, his disposal bringing the ball out of the backline is fantastic.

However, I still have some concerns of his defensive awareness, attributes and willingness to throw his body into contests.

Personally I still think he’s got some reasonably significant development to go but the areas of concern in his defensive awareness, knowing when to commit to contests and the ability to go harder at contests are all areas of a game that can be worked on.

If those areas can me improved and worked on I firmly believe he can make it, he has the physical ability and skill set to make it at this level.

I am happy for him to stay in the side until Houli returns though, he’ll be much better in the long run for this exposure.

Yep, blokes with elite disposal AND athleticism AND contested work disappear in the first half of the first round of the draft.

The ones with elite disposal who fall a bit short on the athleticism and contested stuff at junior level still have a lot to work with. Houli was accused of being soft for years before nobody could ever question him on it again. Part of improving that is just experience and game time by itself, but we also have the best defensive coaching team around and the results speak for themselves.

Egg's already elite in the key area which is the hardest to improve, he's developing well with his tank and the rest of the defensive aspects will come.

Hmmm there are 100 players that play 'Houli's Role in the AFL

But Houli is an All Australia

Another nothing post from the maybe Richmond supporter president
I legit had to read that again , is he cooked lol? This houli almost won two norm smiths , I don't get this guy and him being negative all the time. I noticed he was dead silent when we won the flags, is he even a fan or a legit troll, if he is a fan surely he is not a true fan

The issue is there isn't time to wait. Its not fair as such cause houli was given time but the flag was won last year.

5he plan is to this this amd next year. Not sure if eggy is ready.

I've gone from thinking houli was covered to wanting him out of the side which is a bit harsh.

Iirc Markov had a game with huge meters gained, once, and was ok last game.

Stack isn't playing well but maybe a better option smd has arugably more upside

He's still very small physically. At only 180cm he needs to add some muscle mass to be able to hold himself in contests. I reckon most times he's been beaten it's because he was simply brushed aside by a stronger body not because he was poor defensively. He'll get there but we've gotta take the good with the bad at this stage, unfortunately.

Same has been said of Houli, Short, Ellis at different times too and all of them played roles in our premierships.

We can't carry too many of them, but he can still have a place in our side.

To mitigate his defensive side, maybe we could play him as an outside winger? 15-20 touches a game and delivering more inside 50 and running down the wings might also be a role for him.

Thought he was a bit more aggressive last night. Nobody would have stopped that pass to Wallace. He is definitely not a physical player and that is something that he will have to learn, a bit like Bachar and Short, who are passable now. But his foot fairly offset's his weaknesses. He will drop off probably at some point but right now he is in front of the ledger or what he adds to the team.

Idk Grimes/vlastuin would have given it a good crack

The ball shaped away and favoured Wallis. Wallis was very good one on one all night, and did take marks on Broad/Short or Grimes from memory. As I said, he will learn to be more competitive as he goes, and also comparing DES to Grimes and Vlastuin is a little unfair as they would be two of the toughest most competitive players in the league.

The one thing he lacks is toughness and I can see teams using it to their advantage as he can’t defend and is weak in the contest.

I’d be dropping him for Vlastuin for the Lions game

The recent games we've had on our terms, North & Dogs, Egg has played very well. A number of players had clangers down back: Grimes kicked OOF, Markov dropped mark & Baker a couple of errors too. Upside of Egg was late in the 4th goal saving mark on the goal line good kick to Pickett/Shai/Dusty/Higgins who had a shot on goal.
Who gets dropped? Markov, Stack or Egg? None deserve to be. Markov tall, fat and picked up the speed of the game instantly (unlike Naish by comparison) I'd rather get games into Egg if Markov isn't going to be at the club next year.

I see something to work with, needs to get fitter stronger and show he can do more than 15-20m pin point foot passes under no pressure to retain possession. Does he really create or damage oppos? Miles away from being best 22 on a healthy list.
