It would require us to spend a huge amount of money to bolster our national defense instead of being able to rely on the US navy and their thousands of marines which they can no longer afford.

We currently spend more on disability care than national defense because the US covers the cost in both cash and blood for us.

Australian military doctrine isnt a secret, and when it was policy that we have a force that could integrate into US forces, we were pretty open about it. So, Im not buying this `secret reliance on US ground forces conspiracy'. If that was our policy, we would just say so. Also, Australian military doctrine is built on the assumption that Australian deterrence can only work at the Air/Sea gap. We dont have the forces to fight a major ground campaign in Australia, because any military power that could land a sizeable force here will crush us if they do.

We had to build an amphibious capability to enable to project forces to the islands around us, precisely because of the realisation that we couldn't rely on the US to do it for us. 12 Submarines, of the most powerful and modern sort we could get (at some considerable cost and project risk), precisely because we need to pose enough threat to shipping to worry even the most powerful navies, because we realised we couldn't rely on the US to do it for us.
