People who believe that talented people shouldnt keep the above normal fruits gained through employing ones talent because it was unearned through random biological allocation. And while their argument may be partially true it ignores the fact that effort is also a big part of the equation (biological talents dont reap returns alone) and that broader society often benefits when talented people are fully incentivised to utilise their talents. There are still lots of socialists and socialist leaning people around including on this board who would dismiss properly rewarding merit.

And going back to the actual topic does it even matter if we call Harris a DEI hire or not? She didnt make it to the last rounds of the democrats nomination process in 2020 but got the vp job anyway in large part because biden needed to offset his old white man image with the opposite (this ofcourse wasnt the only reason as her own talents got her in the door to begin with). Everyone on the left is open about this. Numerous commentators on msnbc, cnn and new york times all have stated harris was needed to offset bidens identity. Sadly identity matters in usa politics, but because it matters then there is nothing wrong with it because identity has political capital. And in a popularity contest this is what you need. Its no different to trump employing Pence as his vp in 2016 to get the conservative nutters on side after all his very unchristian scandals.

Regardless of this issue (and it really isnt much of one at all despite republicans trying to bang on about it), harris is overwhelmingly the better candidate then trump. Because she has the better policies on her side and is clearly more educated and intelligent than trump.

When I was growing up - in my limited understanding - Socialism was ownership by the state for the benefit of everyone.

In Australia this tended to manifest itself in Utility Ownership ie Telecom, Electricity and Gas, Employment Services and Apprenticeship Schemes , Railways , Bus and Trams . Public Service in mental health and correctional services etc etc

Now a lot of those have been sold off to private companies we see a rise in complaiints and failures in the business model or a replication of what came before for 40x more cost
