Roast 4th quarter umpires.

I think about 6 Pies frees were advantage where we had it anyway and in two cases it ended up being a disadvantage. Very poor umpiring today.

It's the players call to play on not the umps so if its a bad decision or disadvantage its not the umps fault. I don't think the umps were great or shocking today, they did their job and had absolutely no influence on the game and it was good free flowing footy. The only complaint has to be the shit that Glass gets away with, hanging off Dawes all day for dear life, not sure how that's ignored for two hours.

there is a thread on the west coast board "toasting" the umpires. hardly surprising given the ride they were given with all of the influential decisions yesterday

i think speshal ed may have alluded in this thread to the naitanui one in the 2nd quarter - the free against L brown was a joke. the decision to award 50m was just as bad. this stopped the pies momentum in its tracks and allowed the eagles to be within about 2 goals at 1/2 time rather than staring at a 5-6 goal deficit the way the play was going. not to mention that the next west coast goal, le cras's piece of ass from the boundary, was the end product of a move initiated from another inside 50 from an iffy naitanui free

then the last quarter - eagles kicked the 1st goal, we go froward and cloke is clearly taken high by priddis about 40 out. play on is waved. had cloke goaled from the free that should have been paid (which is no given of course) the lead is back to 26pts and it would never have got as tight as it did

not to mention krakouer's non free when dragged down about 20m out later in the last quarter

the umpires impacted the game, no doubt. and it certainly wasn't in our favour

Probably agree with that as Eagles did have run of the play in the final quarter. Great to see the umps swallow the whistle and make the players earn their kicks, after all it is a final. Umps did well I thought and had no bearing on the outcome. Problem is they will probably interpret the rules differently next week and that is what annoys supporters.

Watching the replay how Didak didn't get the free was ridiculous. Selwood just dived on him while he was chasing the ball to the goal square. Was ridiculous really.

That umpire number 23 has given us nothing everytime he officiates! Absolute prick!
This guy is the worst he ****ing hates the pies. i have no faith in him at all. This guy iirc has in 4/5 games he has umpired the pies this year, called in the boundry umps and goal ump for potential touched, every time this has happened goal was given. All the ruck frees have a look at the replay both rucks holding, pulling yet wc free every time. Q1 jack darling running through 5 players " play on " wc scramble goal result. Q2 natinue free at bounce 50 goal. this happened the whole game. Q4 krak free, play on, dawes and cloke held all day.
That 23 umpire did this the whole game, its pretty silly to look at the final total and if the total frees are similar, the game was umpired fine, its like saying a player say cloke had only 6 kicks for a game people would say glass pantsed him, what if you add 6 goals to the stats. This guy will not umpire a pies game again this year, the powerbrokers at the pies will make sure of it.

I understand the rule and the players make the call, but it is still the umpires discretion e,g Scott Pendlebury vs. Geelong (they make mistakes). Sometimes they let them take the advantage and sometimes they call it back, that is what I find so confusing and I think they made mistakes yesterday on several occasions in relation to this rule.

Normally I don't complain but, the way Glass manhandled Dawes all game really, got on my nerve. Also, a mark for Cloke wasn't paid although, I haven't seen the game on TV either.

I think umpires have made mistakes all weekend like, the Sam Gilbert one. How can a player you doesn't have possession get rid of it?

Agree 100% with this comment it will all change next week just some constistency with re freekicks would be welcome,Eagles got the rub of the green because they were making the play and nothing wrong with that that is what you want.:thumbsu:

Been watching the umpires pretty closely for a couple of years now and they are made to look much worse than they really are having to play catch up with almost weekly re-interpretations of rules from on high.

However having said that there seems to be creeping into the game the pity rule. I've lost track of how often a side being thrashed or even just soundly beating is given the rub of the green by umpires in the last quarter, this isn't just with Collingwood games its comp wide. It seems to have had its genesis with Sydney being brought into the comp and some of the hidings they got early and now seems to be becoming an integral part of the game. Certainly doesn't affect most games results but there is such a thing as winning margin betting and IF - and its a big if - IF there is a 'guidline' from on high to 'level' the playing field slightly in won matches then the AFL is far guiltier than any betting player or coach for bring the game into 'disrepute'.

A few points:
- Dawes is one or two matches short of a run. Even though he was manhandled to a degree by Glass yesterday, I felt he was looking for frees instead of doing what the proven finals performers do and go about their business not hoping/expecting to get the benefit of the umpires. If an umpire senses a player is staging for frees, it makes them all the more unlikely to reward them with a free kick the next time.
- The umpires, apart from a few instances, do seem to have held onto their whistles during this finals series. That's what Finals footy is all about - let the play go on.
- There is not doubt that in the last quarter, the Eagles got the rub of the green. 70/30 free kicks for us not paid, and 40/60 free kicks for them paid. Makes a massive difference. Case in point the 50 metre penalty they got that was actually about 70 metres - I think it was Selwood - he kicks that and the result could have been very different.
- The advantage rule HAS to go. How can the player make the decision as to whether to take the advantage or not, which has to be continuous play, when there is so much uncertainty and reliance on umpires' interpretation as to who is actually getting the free kick.
- How umpires are constantly able to find free kicks in ruck contests amazes me. That is as grey as it gets.
