From his interview on SEN.. was shocked he got picked up didn’t expect it at all

Also happy being a sparky loves the job

Not the most glowing interview
Geez I was very impressed with his interview. Seemed like a great character and was over the moon for the opportunity.

Interesting that he played ruck last year for Keilor.

I was watching with interest - has a bit of x factor and the way he launches at the ball and can grab a mark is quite impressive. Nice set shot routine. Has lacked a bit of composure and polish at times but as ANT555 said in another thread you could see the improvement happening and in pretty quick time. Looks fast to me and is an awkward matchup.

Can't believe he slid to pick 16

As Toce or whatever his name is said this bloke is way further behind in development than Blight. Still would have like Sam Davidson but happy for this lad to have a crack.

Hate to be negative nelly here but not sure what the club saw in this young guy that was any different to Archie May.

I'm a bit unsure why we would give a spot to Gray when we think May isn't even close to AFL ready. They are of similar height, weight & age. Their stats are also similar in 2024.

I even took out the games Gray played down back which might have hindered his stats in comparison

I'd be pretty pissed if I was May, and I personally don't think May is ready. The only reason I think we took him was because he can play down back and up forward. In saying that pretty sure we signed May up in the VFL as a Ruckman to begin with and he has ended up a forward, so with Naismith going down perhaps we felt we needed another person to play up forward if Ryan is playing seniors?

stats aren,t everything

Scope and ceiling is everything

Why dont you track the rate of improvement for a better picture ?

One way to look at it may be that Gray was playing local footy last year, and is now performing as well as May, I guess they think that Gray will be better again this time next year, I guess

Both he and blight will be the best 2 key talls in history. Put your house and life savings on it right now
I am sure you have said that before, in regards to forwards not on our list anymore lol. Hope we see them at AFL level this season.

Nice try but not even close. Originally was a sparkie. I'm a Superintendent on tier1 major projects and run my own building company as a side hustle. No idea what your background is. Cbf'd reading anything you've written much less be arsed guessing 🤣
Always find it quite sad some people feel the need to sprout how successful they are in the real world to complete strangers.

May is playing in a side with a few more wins to potentially a stronger team overall and more inside 50’s

So it’s possible that Gray is playing a lot better with similar numbers but less of an opportunity

You completely missed my point ...

Let me say it more clearly ... May and Davidson are not AFL footballers but they are better than Gray in so many ways including their performances at the MCG on the weekend
I thought Gray pretty noticeably in that he hit the ball in the air at speed and a few stuck. At 195cm he looked pretty quick and agile. I also like Davidson, but he is more your tall half forward. May also has some tools, good size and reasonable mobility, but a bit one dimensional at this stage.

Thing about this time of the year is you are pinching them from somewhere else. We took Gray from Essendon, who for all we know might have planned to pick him. May and Davidson are still with us until the end of the year, and if the recruiters think they are good enough we may still pick them late in the draft, we have plenty of late picks.

They saw ability versus limited ability. Pretty simple really.

Now comes the interesting bit, what number do they give Gray.

From what I can see we have: 8, 9, 11, 12 & 16 available below 50, as the numbers above 50 are for the VFL.

It puts us in a tricky spot. We almost have to give them 11 and 16, as the next lowest numbers available are 75 and 83.

Not sure if players can change numbers in-season or not?

I have not seen Archie May play but I noticed he is 199cm.

Very hard for a 199cm to play wing given the required ground ball prowess.

At 199cm RFC has to consider such options within a mix at possibly top heavy even in backline or forward line combination

As I said have not seen Archie May play but in the highlights Campbell Gray looks fairly nimble for his shorter height.

I looked at some of the comments about Gray apparently appearing more athletic on this thread so I do not think you are comparing apples with apples and frankly Gray probably has been selected for possible roles not considered for May
