"Essendon has today finalised a five-man leadership group for 2019, with Dyson Heppell set to lead the Bombers as captain for a third consecutive year.
The 26-year-old will be supported by Zach Merrett (vice-captain), David Myers, Joe Daniher and Orazio Fantasia in the club’s new-look leadership group."

"Senior coach John Worsfold said the five-man leadership group would continue to drive high standards across the Bombers’ playing group."

“We feel all five men bring strong and diverse qualities that will ensure the growth of the playing group across a number of values and we hope this resonates on-field too."

Having Daniher (who doesn't want to play for Essendon) and Myers (who lost his passion for football) as key members of Essendon's 2019 leadership group was a disaster. Add in Fantasia (who is rumoured to want a return home)!

These guys are on the big bucks. Essendon is fundamentally a young team that requires guidance and role models. Would be interesting to see the advice Daniher (and Myers + Fantasia) were providing.

You have to admire the job that Hodge did guiding the young players at Brisbane.

Why didn't guys who genuinely care about the Club like Hurley and Hooker get onto the Leadership Group? Both were in tears after the loss to Eagles. They genuinely cared. As do guys like Walla. Hurley and Hooker were dumped from the Leadership Group at the end of 2018 season.

I just had a dumb thought run through my head...
What if Daniher went to Sydney for pick 5 and whatever else but only on seeing out his current contract (not signing an extension beyond 2020).
Then this time next year signs back to us as a free agent.
I know its probabbly not even possible in the rules of free agency but it would be a massive inside job lol.

I'll see myself out...

Would you mind if I rang up trade radio and asked this?

There is every chance this does not get done. We feel we can keep him and get him back and happy in the same way we did with Aaron Francis.

I kind of hope it does get done though. I don't want a player who doesn't want to be here and I dread to think what effect making someone stay against their will could potentially have on the rest of the group (not to mention themselves).

Because that's totally the same thing.

Being the spearhead of a big vic footy club is an every day stress which every human being has. Okey mete.
Little Aussie battlers that struggle putting food on their family’s table is less of a stress? CEO of a multi million dollar company is less of a stress? Righto.

He may not like the media attention in Melbourne but it doesn’t make it a mental health issue. It may not sound politically correct but the term is overused.

I come in peace.
I think you guys are going through what we were last year with Hannebery. He was the lifeblood of the club, Rising Star winner (played his first game for us while he was still at school), 3xAA, AFLCA Award winner, premiership player. However, he was on about $800k and looked like his body was shot. Along came the saints who offered to take him off our hands and it was a traumatic time for the fans. Basically, we gave him up for a couple of 2nd round picks even though he was still contracted. We didn't set the bar too high to get the deal done because we saw that the move may be good for both clubs. Did the saints get a steal? Maybe, but it turns out that if we had kept him then we would have paid another $800k this season for another 4 games.
We were able to get that money off our cap and the rumours last year were that we had a big fish in our sights. I don't know if JD was the fish, but if it was then this has been going on for some time. And let's face it, every club chats to contracted players all the time, so none of us can get on a high horse.
I feel for you guys because we were going through the same thing last year. I think that the worst thing to do would be to set the bar so high that the Swans wait for another year while you pay another year of his salary in your cap for how many games?
Difference is Hannerbery is a few seasons older to start with. Secondly you guys would not be looking at him unless the thought was he will be up and going as he is still going to be on decent coin.

Normally yes but Joe still loves the club and the players. It is not like he wants to go because he hates us.

Your straw men have no power here.

I'm not saying he hates us but if the problem is being in Melbourne and carrying the weight of the collective footyball hopes and dreams of 80,000 plus Essendon supporters I don't see how the club can change any of that.

Get him back on the field and playing. Worked wonders for Francis who was also feeling the pressure of injuries and being a high draft pick among other things.
Joe was not having any issues until he got injured again this year and had to go through rehab again. The club can stop all media requests and hide him away to a degree.
He is not a player to just move on. Even the two first round picks do not cover the hole left in the list based on this years draft. His situation is not like Dane Beams nor is it family based.

Lets start with a teaspoon of concrete and go from there or give him five minutes with Alex Johnson.

More to it with Francis as I’m sure you’re aware. Carry on.

I like your optimism ant but I'm having trouble seeing it pan out that way. It's pretty hard to hide in the footy capital of the country. Especially when you're that big.

It is not my optimism. The club thinks they can turn him around.
