Nothing wrong with fog... Some people have such high expectations and expect these player to just be AFL ready...It's pretty rare they are...

Fog went at #22 in his draft year. He notched up 15 senior games in his first season and averaged 13 possessions per match.

Our three most recent successful single-figure draft picks* (all three-time premiership players, amongst many other individual accolades they achieved) managed the following number of senior games in their first seasons at the club.

Mackie 0 games (played 13 senior games in his second season)
Bartel 11 games
Corey 5 games

None of these players (in the seasons referenced here) managed to average 13 possessions per game. And yet Fog is apparently considered by some to already be a blow-out.

The rush to judgement for some can be brutal and swift. And clearly, on some occasions, entirely wrong.

EDIT: I've (somehow) forgotten the skipper, who produced 21 games (at an average of 19 possessions) in his debut year, including playing in a flag team. But he is such an outlier on this measure, I hardly think it's reasonable to write off Fog based on his numbers compared to the phenomenon that was/is Joel.

* Based on my personal definition of 'successful', I've left out Tenace, who played 12 games in his debut season at around 10 disposals a game...

Not sure why people are complsining about getting a HBF. It's always been an issue which is why Zuthrie and O'vonnor got game before they are ready. We also have very little speed on the wings so Clark fits a need.

With starting positions the wings are going to be crucial from now on. With all flankers starting in the 50 the wings have an acte of free space at the bounce.

Looks handy and it'll give us flexibility to release Tuohy further forward or Guthrie into midfield once he's up to speed. Also I love that a guy who was among our best in a final is still apparently not ready for afl footy just because he didn't grow up with the game. If O'Connor's doing that "before he's ready" he'll be winning Brownlows once he's up to speed. Plenty of room for both in the team.

I don't mind Clark, his ball use is what will make him a great player for us. As of now I think our use of the ball is terrible so he certainly fills a defficiency. I agree with what you're saying though, he doesnt exactly plug any notable gaps. I can't see us going anywhere next year or the forseeable future until we bring in a kid who forces Selwoods/Ablett out of the midfield. Certainly no one of that calibre on the list currently, it's been a very long while.

Do you think we should have banked the 2 early 20s for Kelly and fast tracked the rebuild? I certainly think so.

I would not have minded having those picks ...if it let us trade into earlier in the draft.. or get another r1 pick. ..but as it stands one can see why geelong said no... xoh went earlier than some thought so he would not have been there to pick

Remember that starting positions only apply to center bounces, so as soon as there's a stoppage (or potentially even in general play) teams will still be shifting into current set-ups.

I know. I think it will lead to more quick break away goals though.

Honestly could not be more excited. The kid I told my friends that I wanted for us more than two weeks ago. Absolute win!!!! Has what Ratcat wants in that he has performed at the top level and has massive scope for improvement as well. STEAL!!!!

Same. He was the one I wanted but never thought we had much chance of getting. Love kids that can back themselves to mark overhead and are great kicks. Tick. Tick. He fills a massive need for us as well.

I think what we do now, having preserved our R1 2019 and likely/hopefully receive another R1 2019 for Kelly, that we trade our R2 2019 for a pick in R2 this year. Improve our draft position now.

Maybe. I doubt that will involve going through the wings though, more breaking clear from the center bounce and getting it straight into the forward line.

Time will tell but I can picture more plays like 'Chappy's 'go fetch' to the wings in the 11 GF where Selwood got there first and hit up Hawkins....who missed.

The wing space is going to be very important from bounces imo.

Can see Clarko setting up the Hawks to get Mitchell to clear it to the wings for Smith and Scully to run into space and hit up their forwards.

Best available.

Gutted we didn’t get Caldwell. One was bound to slip, and when you think about it, it’s quite logical that the small HBF player in the top ten mix was going to be the one who slid instead of one of the explosive mids or KP.

He isn’t quite as tall as we would hope (182cm) another 4-6cm would make him the perfect HB size.

AFL site has him as 185 cms?

So does this kid actually have talent of is he just another fogerty with lots of endeavour but not much skillwise?

Nice Seeds... you give Clark a spray and Fog a backhander all in one post. One hasn't even trained at the club and the other is a 1 year player.

Cranky much lol

GO Catters

Disagree.

There was players imo available for the role. ..and as I have previously said ..I think its time to push Joel and GA into other roles and hand over the reigns to a young group.. It would be easier with early picks for sure. ... in the end only time will tell us if we have dropped the hammer right or wrong. If we pick up a better player or two with our next picks then it may on balance be good over all draft.

Holding pattern just means we are slowly slipping sliding into a state of insignificance ... while others improve and go past us.

I agree we could have gone for a decent ball winning mid and i would have liked RCD given Hately was gone but that said there's a certain logic to rebuilding the defence first so they can cope when they start getting peppered by a midfield having to learn on the run.

Of the 'pure' mids left I'm not sure who else the cats could have taken. Jye caldwell was no chance to be there at pick 15.

Hately I think is the one the cats wanted , but that's because they thought Clark would be gone!

The guy will be a jet - reminds me of Docherty !

The next Selwood will come in the drat years ahead !

I did laugh that Jordan was obviously given a quick geograohy lesson before his interview for the Cat's website.
